    Hi Thuy! Thank you sooooo much for your channel. Im 25 and never learned Vietnamese as Ive never lived with my dad but lived with my Cantonese mother. So i know Cantonese but no Vietnamese. I’ve always wanted to learn Vietnamese but didnt find any good free resources. The biggest issue was how FAST Vietnamese people talk 😂 Im so grateful for you to help me with my journey to surprise my Vietnamese family with the new skill ❤😊

    Thank you for the video. While with my broken Vietnamese, I can usually catch few words here and there in a casual conversation spoken in Northern accent and generally understand what people are talking about, Southern Vietnamese is largely unintelligible to me. It feels like a whole different language for learners who are used to the Northern accent. 😂

    Hello Thuy. What do you think is the reason for the language differences between the North and South? Do you think it is because of the political division that existed for 30 years?

    • @SlowVietnamese
      @SlowVietnamese  Před rokem

      I don't think it's because of that. There are many factors: Vietnam expansion to the south since many centuries ago, custom, dialect, weather, migration from central Vietnam, ... You can read more here about "southward advance":

    I agree with most of what you said, just not that Southern are more friendly than Northern. I think Northern are way much more friendly than Southern, especially more politely. In HCMC when you buy something or go eat in a restaurant they don’t say a single word. No hello, nor the price, no thank you and no good bye.

    • @threedoubles4827
      @threedoubles4827 Před rokem +1

      I spent one night in HCMC and had exactly that experience in a restaurant. It was my first time in Vietnam and I quickly left and went to Cambodia, I thought I would never return because of it. It was unbearably hot too. Luckily I decided to take a chance some years later and went to the north and central regions and found the most wonderful, friendly, welcoming, and helpful people. tôi yêu Việt Nam

    • @mereditht8
      @mereditht8 Před rokem +6

      Lol for my own experience it's absolutely opposite. They don't even treat any other Northern Vietnamese from different regions right. If you are native Hanoi, for example, you might pay 2$, but if a Northern Vietnamese from different region will be asked to be paid 5$, Southern Vietnamese 8$, any other Asian race with Black 8$ or 10$, White people might be quite fluctuated either 2$, 8$ or free.
      And not just about prices, there are way much more things but I can't manage to list them all. Their hypocrisy, aggression, discrimination, and violence. There must be a reason for their bad reputation that even lots of Northern Vietnamese also have to agree. Lots of countries even have to limit any Vietnamese immigrants that come from the North, can that say anything? We mostly see Northern Vietnamese in HCMC but rarely see Southern ones in any region of the North of Vietnam. And most of them will either stay there because of their marriage. If it's only for business or study, not so many other Vietnamese from different regions can manage to stay there long😕

      @@2asek lol well yea probably😅 I mean it's okay if you think that your experience is truth but my or others' experiences are exaggerating. Each of us had different experiences so it's actually my bad that I seemed getting emotional and somewhat forcing my experiences on you, but yea that's how they were to me and my friends/acquaintances. Like 10 people said can't compare to what you experienced on your own and I think that's normal. And maybe you're right too, just like nobody can see before that the Beast is charming except Belle.
      Tbh and to be fair, you can ask any Vietnamese but not from the South or the Hanoi, ask those that are from the middle region and any other cities from the North, the Western, any Vietnamese around the world and maybe they can tell you somewhat. I don't know...maybe they can be more exagerating than I did..or maybe not🤷‍♀️
      Anyway, I'm sorry that I quite react. I should end here though. Take care! :)

      @@mereditht8 I'm Vietnamese, but pretty "neutral" since i was born in Europe and my family were all born and raised in Laos but we kept our Vietnamese culture. A lot of my Western friends just been recently to VN and they say the same as i said. I was this February in VN and i can't relate at all what you said. And it's true for me that not many Southern have manners to say hello or the hospitality how to treat a guest unlike northern. Anyway, Viets in general are miles away from Thai or Lao people if it comes to hospitality. I dont say Souther (or what you said Norther are) are bad, i just think that the Southern they are more into doing business than care about costumers. Not many restaurants in VN threated me friendly, if yes, then they were Northern like doing small talk, saying hello, thank you ect. IN Saigon, forget it, especially Benh Thanh market how they scream and yell (next that i dont like the souther dialect but thats my personal taste) Horrible.
