1980 Honda ATC 110 With No Spark - How To Troubleshoot A Points Ignition System

  • Today we're trying to diagnose why my 1980 Honda ATC110 has no spark. This machine is another boomerang bike for me. I bought this back in July of 2019 to fill a void in my collection. Didn't necessarily care if it ran or not. I eventually replaced it with a nicer machine in the fall of 2020 and sold it to my buddy Jim with a few other machines last winter.
    Jim ended up selling me a bunch of machines a couple weeks ago and this was one of them. It was pretty much in the same condition as it was when it left me. I figured out pretty quickly that it had no spark but I wasn't sure why. So, through the process of elimination, we started checking the various components out that could be causing the issue.
    Was it the points? Was it the switches? Was it the ignition coil? Was it the condenser? Well, watch the video and you'll find out! And you'll also see why having some parts machines around can come in handy!
    You'll here me mention Mike Palmgren in this video. Mike is an amazing guy and ATC restoration king. Find the website for his business, Vintage Motorsports, at www.vintagemoto...
    You'll also see I mention Curtie Eldredge who runs a carburetor restoration and maintenance company called 223 Cycles. Find his website at www.223cycles....

    Love you got your 1980 started after swapping the coil. And really appreciate the tip on the Japanese standard- style Phillips! How many people know that!? 🤷🏻‍♂️ I had no clue. Key information in restoring our beloved ATCs.

    Good call on the JIS recommendation. Most guys think the screws are just hard to break loose.

    Another great video preston. Keep them coming. The jis screwdrivers are awesome. Sometimes ive had good luck using an impact driver on rounded over phillips screws.

    Number one thing on those 110s is clean were the coil grounds to bare metal and back side of coil mag to bare metal and screws to also clip the end of the coil quarter of a inch..
    The coils on those are pretty much bullit proff though I have seen them go out..

    I have that exact JIS set. Make a world of deference. I use a impact screw driver a lot to on the ones people have stripped.

    I don't understand how it hooks up mine has three wires coming off of the harness to plug into the coil that only looks like you have one coming off the coil

    Do you know if the air box off a later 110 will fit a 79-80 If I use the intake boot, box and all? I'm trying to resurrect a 1979 110. It's already a mix of 90 and 110 parts so its not worth much. I just want to get it back on the trails as cheap as possible and expanding the search to include newer models would help a lot.

    • @The1993mustanglx
      @The1993mustanglx Před 2 lety

      For anyone looking for this information. 1979-80 share the same air box P/N that is intake boot, filter body and the filter cage. 1981-82 share intake boot and filter cage with the 79-80. 1983 and above have a stand off attached to the frame making it not fit the 79-82. I'm not sure if you can just make your own Spacers and use that. After seeing the frame difference I stopped my search for that airbox as a replacement. And unless I find one for a steal I'm not going that direction for fear of other differences that I cant make out from ebay pictures. I also checked us90/ATC 90 and the carb is smaller as well as the inlet for the filter cage being smaller. I did find out that the filter cage for a 1982 ATC 185s will interchange with a 1979-1982 ATC110. I'm not sure the difference between the 1981 and 1982 ATC 185s but partzilla does list them as separate P/N's.

    By any chance do you have a spare grab bar for a 84 atc 110 or 125m? I’m restoring a 125m and it’s missing itz
