  • Hi everyone, in this Once Upon a Woman video, we are discussing the improbable fate of one of the most iconic queens of Europe.
She was not born to be queen and yet she became queen of both France and England, marrying twice and becoming the mother of kings. She is the ultimate femme fatale but also the grandmother of Europe who proves to be a true force to be reckoned with.

I’ve been fascinated by Eleanor of Aquitaine ever since I learned about her. Yes, her relationship with her children by Henry is very interesting. I’ve always wondered how she was able to leave her daughters by Louis behind in France. Even royal women suffered personal loss in those days. Great shout out to Dr. Pangonis’ wonderful book Queens of Jerusalem! 👏 Thank you for another great video, Dr. Paranque!

We need a film or tv series on Eleanor of Aquitaine. I propose nominating Olivia Coleman to play Eleanor, she already played Queen Anne in the Favourite and Queen Elizabeth II in the Crown.

Were her daughters from her marriage with Louis be illegitimate? How would their parents marriage affected their marriages? (Irritating from a 2024 lens but for a woman then it was everything)

Without wishing to appear facetious, this description of Eleanor’s character reminded me of a certain present-day duchess whose life has also been surrounded by controversy, though to date she has yet to command an army.
I think most people without particular knowledge of the period are familiar with Eleanor, if at all, through her portrayal by Katherine Hepburn in the 1968 film The Lion in Winter.
I am personally only aware of one other, by Jane Lapotaire, in the 13-part TV series The Devil’s Crown from 1978. It centres on Henry II (played by Brian Cox) so Eleanor is again a subsidiary character, albeit important. (Richard, incidentally, is portrayed as homosexual). From Wikipedia I see that it has never been released on DVD in English though it is available in French as La Couronne du Diable.
