    In the year 1241, after very little warning, terrified monarchs all over Europe could do little but wait as a terrible and colossal wave of nomadic steppe warriors descended upon them from the eastern borders of Christendom. Tens of thousands of highly organised, highly trained and highly experienced nomadic horse archers from beyond the edge of the world. Experts at living off the land, all the Mongol war machine needed to operate was open grassland to feed its horses, cities to plunder, and glory to win, and as chance would have it, lush grasslands just so happened to stretch in an almost unbroken line from France all the way back to Mongolia....
    "They are the Four Dogs of Temujin. They have foreheads of brass, their jaws are like scissors, their tongues like piercing awls, their heads are iron, their whipping tails swords . . . In the day of battle, they devour enemy flesh. Behold, they are now unleashed, and they slobber at the mouth with glee. These four dogs are Jebe, and Kublai, Jelme, and Subotai." - Attributed to Genghis Khan in the Secret History of the Mongols.

    He actually won over 250 battles, and 69 pitched and decisive Army vs. Army battles, and rode well over a million miles on horse back. He is by far the greatest commander in History.......by a long shot! And the tactic of leaving an avenue of escape for surrounded enemy armies, was to prevent the men from fighting with the intensity of men fighting to the death during their last stand, and instead encouraged them to break ranks and flee out the escape route, only to be ridden down by Mongol soldiers during the purposefully planned pursuit, by Mongols on their much faster, with far more stamina, steppe ponies, and rode any survivors down. The pursuits would last anywhere from a few hrs or days and up to 2 weeks!!!

      You really think high schools have the time to teach every single event in history with this much detail? High school and college intro history textbooks have to pick and choose the most relevant and important events throughout the many thousands that have been documented in a single school year, so of course they can't include all of them. That's what advanced college classes and actual adult history books are for. You'll see the same thing all over the world because different events in history are important to different countries around the world. You might hear more about Japanese history in Japan for instance, and less about the US.

    • @ChiRonChiaren
      @ChiRonChiaren Před 6 lety +11

      Urban Student Prepper my mistake. U.S. schools vary very, very widely in terms of quality. We have some of the worst and best (and most sought out for) in the world. Generalizing the education system of a country almost the size of a continent is a really dumb thing to do.
      It actually can be quite beneficial to come here for public education. You just have to make sure you're choosing the right district with a good reputation. If you move to any old place in Alabama, for example, you probably will get a shitty education. If you lived in my high school district (I'm a university student now) however, you'll get an excellent one.

    • @ChiRonChiaren
      @ChiRonChiaren Před 6 lety +6

      Urban Student Prepper I never said private. I meant public. I went to a public school in a Metropolitan Detroit suburb, and it's ranked as one of the best in the country. This is opposed to Detroit's public schools not too far away, which are some of the worst in the country. Not every public school in the US is the same, and the same goes for private schools. To be honest, our public school outperformed virtually all the private schools in the state (which in some places are very affluent). Our suicide rates also vary widely and for a multitude of factors. Suicides in my school were rare, while some other public school districts had higher rates. Again, you're generalizing by cherrypicking our worst schools and ignoring the good ones.

    Nicely done. Subutai (or a dozen other spelling variations) could possibly have been the "greatest" military commander in history. He had the vision and the ability to manage campaigns on a pretty vast scale at that point in history with a masterful command over tactics and strategy. It's kind of mind-blowing to imagine the scope of his invasion campaigns of the West. There is no doubt that he would have reached the Atlantic if Ogedai hadn't died. If he was alone on his mission he would have continued, but there were other princes of the royal Genghis bloodline in this great campaign and they had to return for the power struggle to come ahead.

      I doubt western Europe would have been easy to subdue for the Mongols. For one, medieval Europe was an amalgamation of hundreds of cities, domains, principalities, duchies and states, most of them with their own standing armies and fortifications and castles. The Mongols would have had to face wave after wave of European resistance before they could subdue it. And that when the Mongols were fighting in heavily forested foreign terrain (the steppes ended at Hungary) thousands of miles away from their home turf. I really doubt the Mongols could have conquered Europe. Raided and held parts of it for a time perhaps. But it would have been nearly impossible for them to assimilate Europe into a Mongol Empire like they did with Central Asia, China or the Middle East. The geography of Europe was always unfavorable to centralized empires. The Romans were the only ones who managed to unite a large part of Europe and rule it for centuries.

      @frostyguy1989 Před 6 lety +17

      The Mongol armies favoured rolling plains for their horses, which is why they expanded as far and wide as they did. Most likely, Subutai would have gone through northern Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and northern France, which are not only flat and good grazing for his horses, but contained some of the most developed regions of Europe, places that would have been rich pickings for him. He might even have had a shot at the Italian city states and Rome itself, and if he had, we might not have had a Renaissance. It's confirmed that his spy network was all over the place, with agents planted as far away as England, constantly feeding him intel.

    If Ogadei didn't die in 1243 ( invoking Kurulthai) the entire history of Europe and the world would have been very diffrent. As death of Ogadei saved western europe, the death of Mongke saved the islamic world in the same way

      If Mongke didn't die in 1251 ( or 1252 not sure) Hulagu would have completed campaign against Egypt. When he left for the Kurultai ( to support Kubilai, his brother) Ked Bukha remained with only 30.000, not enough to stop emerging power of Mamluk Egypt under general Baibars. So my claim still stands i'd say
      Berke became a problem after Kubilai becmae the new ChaKhan and Hulagu returned to Persia

      Batu: Should have reacted a little earlier, sorry bout that. But indeed as you say, Berke's victory over Hulagu and his Alliance with the Mamluks stopped the mogol hordes from enslaving the rest of the middle east. His conversion to Islam was the begining of the end for the mongol empire and formalized its break up along the bloodlines of his sons ( Djeuchi, Chagatai, Ogadei and Toluj) Although Kubilai was the last of the Chakhan's, his moving of power from the mogol heartlands to northern china undid everything Genghis Khan had fought for. It brought power back south of the wall where it had been before his rise to power. Th efall of his Yuan dynasty a century later was just the last nail in the coffin

( around modern day Volgograd- Russia) According to the mongols they where subjects of Genghis Khan's oldest son, Djeuchi. Kotan, Khan of the Cumans however didn't see it that way and called in support from Mytislav of Galich, russian prince of Kiev and Galich, his son in law. Their combined force of 80.000 however was defeated by the 30.000 strong mongol army in a briliant battle in which Suboutai withdrew for 11 days, stretchting his opponents army out, then combined with Djebei and crushed them completly.

The lowland plains would be well suited to the Mongols but more elevated areas less so. Plus the density of Castles was far greater. Even so likely the Mongols could have done a lot of damage.

    I loved it but one thing you all seems to not understand. It was never an conquering force that invaded europe. It was nothing but huge raid and that is why we never occupied any village or cities at that time. Mongolians never had enough manpower to keep control over all of the conquered land and by the time of european invasion we were already stretched to thin. all those forces that invade or raided europe had to stay in russia to keep control over them. The whole point of the raiding europe is to get wealth and show of power to let the west know that picking a fight with us is not a good idea. (to make sure that there won't be any invasion from the west in the future)

Incorrect about Poland, Mongols never plundered Krakow they did pass by this but they have been delayed by polish forces before reaching Krakow this allowed to prepare defence, they plubdered before and burned smaller citirs in esst linke sandomietz etc... They went toeards Wroclaw but polish army and citizens burned city them selves looking refuge in thecitadel mongols won main battle by legnica but did not attack any city after thst as they suffer huge loses. They moved from there to czech and hungary to link with main force. Those informations are based on historical manuscripts of Jan Dlugosz

    I’m the biggest Genghis homo but I have to admit, where would Temujin be if there was no Subudei??
    As great as an emperor Genghis was he failed to teach his sons to love each other and even failed to discipline them. To be fair It’s a tough task bc everyone wanted to be great Khan. They were all fierce warriors but were short sited. Tolui and Ogedei were big drunks thus risking the entire empire their Father had built. Chagatai was a brute, a hothead, very insolent, and despised his brother Jochi who had done nothing to him. Simply put, chagatai was not Son of Genghis worthy. Poor Jochi was put in a difficult spot to no fault of his.
    The badass women of the Mongols were often overlooked. Without their support and superbly cunning abilities, the Mongol Empire would not have been what it was, without a doubt!! Sorghagtani Beki, the mother of Kublai, Mongke was an exceptionally woman.
    Genghis’ Mother Hoelun was amongst his most trusted advisors.

      Temujin himself killed his own brother too....I guess it runs in the family. We Chinese has a saying "胡无百年之运" that means step normad won't have fortune over 100 years. We been dealing with them since the beginning of the time. We built the great wall to stop them. Periodically they have a great leader to unite them. Then they became very strong. But when that leader die the sons start infighting almost immediately. Then it break down.

      Holy shit u know our history more than us. I agree all of your points, even the woman part. One of the biggest overlooked part of mongolian history is women generally. Another thing is Subudei was the greatest general in Mongolia, but there are others as well, however his contribution was the greatest. Genghis's biggest mistake was setting his legacy not properly. Even though Chagatai hated Jochi, I think he was much better alternative than Ogedei, just because he was much more kinder and stable person overall. However, because of how his politics were built, Genghis had no other choice other than Ogodei, even though he died of depression and alcholism he created pax Mongolica for a while.

      His succession was a very tricky issue, since all his sons had notable pros and cons. He hoped that by dividing up his empire among his 4 sons that it would ease tensions as long as they recognised a great khan. This was obviously a bad idea since almost immediately after Ogedei and Guyuk, the khanates became only nominally part of the empire and largely independent. And since every khan after Ogedei was essentially elected, this made succession among genghis's descendants very complicated as each competed for power.
