  • Russia launched a massive missile strike against Ukrainian cities last night and attempted to destroy Ukraine's largest hydroelectric power plant. Now that Putin's election is over, Russia is okay with people admitting that Russia is in a war with Ukraine. A motion to vacate the chair has been submitted in Congress and Mike Johnson might be removed from the Speakership.

    • @ssssaa2
      @ssssaa2 Před 2 měsíci +6

I don't think there is much of a comparison. Back then, the democratic world was much weaker. Soviet Union compared to Russia was more powerful than today, Germany was an aggressor nation, and the US completely isolationist, whereas today it is part of the NATO alliance. Most of the smaller countries in Europe were neutral at best as well at the time, it was really only Britain and France against German and Soviet influence. And Germany was the most powerful military in the world hands down.
To be honest, I view Russia as being mostly a joke. I suppose it is a threat to the eastern European nations, but even then I wouldn't worry excessively unless NATO fell through, which is still quite a ways off even if things continue to get worse. I simply cannot imagine Russia invading a NATO country unless it was virtually certain the alliance was completely dead.

Hitting refineries will NOT lead to increases in crude oil prices. If Russia cannot refine oil for their home market, they can't stop production of crude, and they will have to sell the crude on the open market which will LOWER crude prices, and then they will have to buy back refined products which will damage their economy. So the question has to be: why is someone high up in the US telling these lies? Who desperately needs lots of Russian money?

I replied to you elsewhere a few minutes ago. I'm British but live in Portugal. Ukraine has solid support across this continent like no other European country has ever known. From the Nordic countries to the Iberian peninsula. From Ireland down to Greece. That support comes largely from ordinary people.
That's largely true across the majority of the American public too, no doubt. And this despite politicians across both Europe and North America a) trying to pretend that Russia's war is not ultimately with us and b) not engaging the public in a conversation about the very real possibility of war with Russia.
Things have got so bad now that - after having put Ukraine in serious peril due to complacency, wishful thinking and a perception that this war would stay away from us - that politicians and the system are now accepting that war with Russia for us in Europe at least is now a probability rather than a remote possibility. After 2 years of expressing solidarity with words and having no foresight about what happens when existing weapon stockpiles run low, we're now starting to see politicians begin to grapple with the urgency. Still too slow for the time being but the direction of travel is the right one.
Because you're Ukrainian and because of your comment I'm going to spend a few more minutes here replying to you. Most of the people I know are very frustrated and have been very frustrated at the glacial pace of decision-making and political denial with respect to Ukraine. Macron is probably a reasonable barometer of the change in attitude that's been occurring. Better late than never.
To be honest with you Nattalliya, on the morning of the invasion (which I was certain about since early December 2021) I turned to my wife and said "Darlin, he's gone and done it and invaded Ukraine and we're going to be at war in the not too distant future". Like many, I thought there was a risk of Ukraine folding and was almost expecting us to be at war by now. If Ukraine is defeated (and I'll do everything in my power to make sure that it emerges victorious) then we'll be at war in a few years from now - sooner rather than later, I think.
There's a growing - but still not dominant - understanding that Russia is going to attack Europe. First - and this has been happening for a while - via information warfare (as always happened in Ukraine). And second militarily. I agree with those that say that Russia's first military goal will be to split up NATO rather than take European territory. And then European countries beyond Ukraine will come next.
I'm fully cognisant of the slaughter and suffering that many Ukrainians are suffering, the impact on their families and friends and the deep-seated worry, stress and distress caused by the screwing around going on in Western countries (and the US in particular). Not a day goes by when I don't think about the number of Ukrainian men that are dying and being maimed for life as a result of delay and indecision outside of Ukraine. For the first 5 weeks after the invasion I barely slept.
There are a lot of people like me who have always understood what this all means for Ukraine and for us. My worry (and thus much of my effort) has been watching a generation of peacetime European and American politicians trying to cope with "politics as usual" while their house is already catching fire from the war raging next-door but still trying to pretend that it isn't.
The good news is that things now are really happening. The bad news is that while we're getting our house in order Ukraine is struggling in a very real sense to hold the line. Things like F16s were always going to take years for the AF of Ukraine to learn to use effectively, no matter how much courage, dedication and talent they have as individuals. But while ammunition and military hardware have been supplied in insufficient numbers (though, to be fair, in the case of equipment Ukraine has shown both ability and inability to use it effectively, depending on which part of the UA army that we're talking about) the real shortage has been Western political will. Politicians and leaders act like a herd, you know: nobody wants to step out of line until one does and others start to follow.
They now appear to understand that when Putin (and particularly Medvedev) say that Russia is at war with the West or at war with NATO rather than Ukraine per e, they really mean it. And for two years Western politicians were treating this as a Russia-Ukraine war rather than the first (or sixth or seventh) step in a war against their own countries. Few understood how well-advanced Russia's information warfare is inside their own countries. Some still don't understand that even now.
What's largely true is that Western media organisations have such a short attention span that they don't do their job properly. They're lazy and profit-driven. And go for headlines that grab attention even if they're nothing more than Russian propaganda. I realise that this must be incredibly depressing for Ukrainians because just looking at the news media you must thing that we're all really, *really* dumb.
Look... things are now starting to roll. Personally I don't think we can avoid a direct conflict with Russia because we've left it too late to deter Russia enough. But that means that support for Ukraine is more solid amongst the security/military establishment in Western countries - certainly in Europe - than the Western media reflects. We cannot allow Ukraine to lose. But not is anything other than a Ukrainian victory viable to stop Russia before it gets to our doorsteps. That's a realisation that is now gaining hold and is behind the change in language you've probably seen.
I'll just add that as a Western European living right on the other side of the continent, Ukraine seems very close and an attack on the Baltic States or Finland or Poland would seem almost like an attack on the country where I live. Ukraine seems much more like a close neighbour than it ever has. So it feels much more personal to me and my neighbours than you might possibly imagine.
      I wish you well.
      Slava Ukraini.

Russians are not nearly as stupid as they appear to be, only Putler is the stupid one, if things get to hot under their feet they will choose "the west" over Russia, because they are well aware its either that or the end of Russia, WW3 ain't happening.
And then finally there's the very fair argument about some drunken children and rapists with rusty WW2 material vs well paid & trained soldiers with latest material? it's not even a question who would win.

A Vice President who honestly I can't even remember anything she's done in the past four years except soak up tax payer money. Another guy trying to be president, but people are now realizing he was telling the truth when he said he's taken advantage of the corrupt system like every other politician has when he became president last time, and people suddenly don't like that for some reason, but he's also a devout isolationist who doesn't want to cooperate with any other government unless he can take advantage of them. We have a Supreme Court that has been highly politicized, despite the entire point of the Supreme Court's structure being designed to prevent them from being politicized. Meanwhile we have a congress that, as has been the case for the past 100 years, cares only about their own careers and will do whatever they think will benefit them, regardless of the consequences on anyone else. And yes, we're as tired of it as everyone else, but the system is so broken honestly I have no idea what could realistically fix it at this point.

"Jan 3, 2013 - Out of the more than $22,000 spent on gas over the lifetime of an average vehicle bought in 2011, oil companies rake in about $15,000."
There are 11 or 12 million BEVs on US roads . 15,000 times 10 million is 150,000,000,000, or 150 billion.
Average age of the BEV fleet is 3.6 years so using 10 instead of 100 or 12 brings us close enough for this kind of math. Too early to tell how long BEVs will last. Some say less some say much longer. Another 100K is all that much more hurtful for oil companies. Some are buying into charging and others are closing filling stations.

Did you know that Ukraine was a part of UN peacekeeping operation in Yugoslavia between 1992 and 1995? Our soldiers refuse to evacuate and leave civilians behind so they managed to negotiate evacuation of people.
"On 11 July, 1995, Serbs killed 8,000 Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica. They planned the next mass ethnic cleansing in Žepa, where many members of the muslim community also lived. With only nine armoured personnel carriers and light firearms, 79 soldiers from the 240th Separate Battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine defended the town against 2000 Serbs for two weeks. Due to this, Serbian General Ratko Mladic was forced to request negotiations with the Ukrainians. Colonel Mykola Verkhohliad managed to secure a safe passage for the residents. The evacuation started on 25 July. Ukrainian peacekeepers were assisted by the French. More than 60 buses were involved, transporting over 5,000 individuals. This operation was considered the most successful in the history of modern Ukrainian Armed Forces up until 2014
Over a three-year span of peacekeeping missions in Yugoslavia, about 1,300 Ukrainian military personnel joined, 15 of whom lost their lives. Their primary tasks were to contribute to the cessation of hostilities and help stabilise the situation by patrolling the streets, maintaining public order, and escorting humanitarian aid shipments."

Building globally destabilizing military bases in Ukraine is no more acceptable today than it was in Cuba in 1962. Why is the west so against peaceful negotiations? Turns out the story was entirely fake. The Ukrainian ministry publicly said so. Russian disiniformation again.
Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian, ultranationalist political ideology and movement, characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived good of the nation or race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy.
Objectively, can someone point to a notion in this (or any) definition of fascism and say, without a shred of doubt: "That is not true, russia is not doing that."
Isn't it about time we start shilling for pro-russian comments to be straight-up banned from every platform? We are letting fascists promote fascism. You cannot normalize fascism. There is nothing normal about fascism.
I think we need to make project about it, and spread it as much as we can.

Russia will not cease to exist. Things are not that easy.
Even if the Russian Federation collapses, and I hope it will, there will still be a Russian people with a common culture, language and some idea of who they are. Nationalism is strong with Russians, and there is no reason to think that they will ever abandon their "russian-ness" and assimilate with other peoples of Europe and central Asia.
I think much of the indecisiveness among European leaders boils down to this. How do one pacify this huge nation who seems set on fighting a war against Europe?
Since 1991, we have tried to bring them into the fold, and look where it got us.

America is not a closed system, and oil is a fungible commodity. If there's less oil reaching the world as a whole, it will get more expensive in the world as a whole.
If it gets more expensive in the world as a whole, and US prices stay low, US companies can make more money exporting US oil instead of selling it domestically. So that's what they'd do - unless US gas prices rise to compensate, which they will.
