How To: Retrofit Illuminated Shift Knob in ANY BMW

Today, we're installing an OEM E39 M5 illuminated shift knob in my M5 Wagon! This procedure will work for all manual transmission BMW's, and just requires a positive 12v power supply that is turned on with your headlights. This mod is very easy to do in a day, cheap, and makes a huge difference driving your car at night.

I'm having some trouble understanding how you connected the wires to the car without cutting any wires. It happens pretty quick and it's hard to see at 7:22 . Great tutorial but could you help me out with that please!

I used splicing connectors! They clamp onto the wires and piggyback the electrical signals to the wire you want! Makes it great for projects like this, no cutting or soldering needed! And you can take off these connectors and you'll barely notice they were there in the first place 👍

Yes 100%! Just tap into any light source that comes on in the interior when you have the headlights on, like the back-lit LED for the driving mode button! Good luck Allie 👍

All that is left to do in your interior is to swap in a European lower dash for your M5. It would totally look awesome for your car!

Yeah for sure! Same procedure, just tap into the illumination light for the emergency light switch 👍
