I saw him play a set live at my friend's Basement a few years ago, it's all completely one foot and he does some bass stuff on the floor tom. I asked if he did that to sound like he was doublebassing it, and he said that was never his intention. He played for 45 minutes straight imrovising, and when he finished up, I nerded out on him SO HARD, he thanked me and smoked a j with me. What an awesome dude.
he isnt underrated, people who know his work know he`s a beast on the drums, he`s just not very popular/mainstream because of the style/genre he chooses to play that`s all. He`s known for death grips which is completely electronic and far far away from what he does in hella.
just when i thought to myself "man, you can play the drum beats of all the good drummers out there pretty well...you're technique is pretty advanced" THIS GUY comes along he's untouchable as a drummer Amazing
I can see why drum aficionados and old-heads would despise this after only listening to him for around thirty seconds or so...but THEN, if you just stick with it. If you just give his style a chance. It hits you! He is a musical genius in his own right. I've heard the "masters" and yes, they're Wonderful. Their technique and timing sense is impeccable. The thing about Zach Hill is different. His timing is wacky as hell and jarring. Its anything but casual. But what he creates is a wall of weird rhythms that stick with me forever.
no, no, you are totally right. i think that zappa would be impressed, nothing about them working together, but the sheer power he plays with is impressive. but seriously, hill to play 'black page'.. no way, not the same way twice
Last time I actually laughed due to how much awesomeness I was seeing or hearing was when I watched Jojo Mayer's drumming and or listened to Brann Dailor's drumming. Zach is a fucking beast.
I agree that Zach Hill is a great drummer, but Frank Zappa had a very particular personality. He was a perfectionist. Zach's playing is more "freeform" Its ok if hes off a bit, hes established himself enough for people to know "that's his style". Frank Zappa was notorious for being incredibly particular about playing things EXACT. Zach Hill seems like Frank Zappas worst enemy! Both musicians are great in their own right, not trying to sound like i'm attacking your opinion.
Zappa couldn’t play to save his life. He was a composer so naturally he wants the song to sound a certain way but in no way could he come close to Zach on the drums. Btw Zappa was a very freeform musician he’s noted to improvise his guitar solos with a sloppy but also tight accuracy that he always comes back to the beat with.
crackthesky you have no business even watching this if you think that is random noise. reevaluate your entire life and what you probably havent done with it, and consider revising your terribly thought out statement. please.
with robby moncrieff, right? this guy is outta control. mr. hill is on some next level shit. frank zappa would lose his fucking mind if he got to see him.
ive got 4 drummers that i put all on the same level of greatness this guy, jimmy chamberlin, the rev from a7x and ginger fish from marilyn manson, man this guy is a badass!
@Basplayer893 Alright melodramatic dude, chill out. It's not easy for everybody to comprehend, but if you think you "get it," you're being pretentious. Zach is dynamic but he's not a technical drummer.
Zappa would have never played with Zach Zach isn't a very good drummer honestly.. If you don't know why then you don't know shit about drumming. Whoever even brought that notion up should be punched in the face relentlessly.
I agree with the zappa part but, honestly I couldn't disagree more about his musicianship. He is insanely talented at keeping time in a crazy and really interesting way. It's definitely different from everything else but that is not a good reason to call it "shitty", I think a lot of people similarly disliked Zappa for the same reasons you dislike Zach Hill. You listen to a performance like this and dismiss it as just randomly hitting drums as fast as possible with no rhythmic timing, I'm sure many people listened to something like Lumpy Gravy and dismissed it as wrong note abstract garbage with no depth to it.
Music is about self expression, not about living up to an arbitrary standard of technical skill. Zappa is progressive music 101, having heard of him does not make you cool

Jordan Sabie okay “zach hill”

His right food doubles are out of this world. But I get tense shoulders and a strong desire to eat a cheeseburger just watching him play.
