Don't think Ryan ever came back to the band. Zach's style didn't really suit Wavves sound, but damn if he didn't steal every single show he played with them
@@PineappleStickers I dunno i personally really like listening to Zach Hill play all bf to simple chords. If he was their full time drummer and I’d probably listen to them.
He played along with the song really well, and matched the guitar riffs with his own drum riffs. He also toned it down depending on what part of the song it was. I don't see how this is "overplayed". He has a consistent beat and throws in some fills.
Also Zach himself has said he doesn't like when people think he's trying to be overly technical, he plays how he feels, and what he hears, he says he hears extra notes, along with that he is entirely self taught meaning that even at slow tempos his filled beats are like this.
For anyone who says this is over-drummed, just imagine how much less exciting and way more repetitive and boring this song would be with out Zach on drums.
people talk about "over-drumming" as if the drums aren't an instrument within the song. there's only guitar and vocals going along with it, and the guitar's playing a whole two chords. if the guy was playing guitar solos or was singing keys and improvising and shit no one would be bitching.
Maybe "over-drum" is not the most precise way of saying it, but I agree that all instruments should be serving the song as a whole. When people say someone "over-drummed" it's usually a remark on not playing to serve the overall song- the same way people might criticize a guitarist for taking a solo right in the middle of the chorus and drowning out the vocalist- like yeah just because you can shred doesn't mean it's always time to shred. Like on drums, just because you can chop it up doesn't mean you should throw down 16th notes throughout an entire song. Zach's style works great in hella and maybe other bands where the songs are built around that style of drumming but it doesn't necessarily translate well here. He's fun to watch, no doubt about that.
please tell me that you love me that’s exactly my thoughts on zachs playing. Hes the main instrument people are just used to guitar serving that purpose. Like Les Claypool uses bass as the main instrument in Primus. Theres other examples I cant think of but thats whats so great about zach. Kinda just repeating what you said but the dudes amazing and I cant praise him enough lol
sorry larry, forgot the world revolved around you bro. zach hill is literally the front running contemporary experimental drummer, has been redefining hip hop/electronic as well as some next level math rock band. shut the fuck up
David Harrhy So he plays snare rolls on all of his drums and hits his cymbals really hard and has a double kick drum pedal. OK. I've seen a few of his vids now and while he's good at what he does, I'd hardly call him a "legend." Fast rolls on one or two drums at a time sound impressive to non-musicians, but if you have experience in snare drumming and know how to hold your sticks and all that, they're incredibly easy for a competent drummer. I'd almost call him a percussionist instead of a drummer. The only semi-impressive thing about his technique is the way he manages to put the rolls together in interesting and musical ways. Mainly he's playing on pure emotion and feel, which is great for amateurs and indie bands, but you need serious technical mastery to be "a legend." His timing is good, but definitely not legendary. Also, he's hitting way too hard. Beating the shit out of your drums is a noob thing. Also, I hate rap, so mentioning that he does hip hop too doesn't exactly impress me.
I was 24 ,when my buddy showed me this when I first got into making music, more so aphex BoC style stuff for years, industrial and heavier electronic stuff, then one day we were on some good shitty whiskey and he played this for me on shitty 36” Yamahas w decent bass. Changed my life. Now at 38 I interrupt xas parties and steal the aux after wagon wheel and pump this bad mofo till the tweeter blows. Zach your my herooooo
I have two problems with most rock drummers: 1. They serve as backup and are little more than human metronomes. 2. They go overboard and play as fast possible, sounding like jumbled messes. Zach Hill is neither of those things. He's more than a beat, and his performances have purpose - as though every note is necessary and not just showing off.
That seems pretty contradictory. If they were just being a metronome, they would be doing nothing but keeping time. If they were going overboard and playing as fast as possible then they wouldnt be doing much "metronoming."
Dax Johnson this is a year late but constraining instrument roles like that is pretty limiting. If you just keep looking at music that way, with each instrument only having ONE role with ONE purpose, music will never evolve.
What an interesting take on this song. Anybody notice how Zach's ride cymbal gradually gets farther and farther away from him until 3:12 when he pulls it back into place?
Zach Hill performed with wavves. Zach Hill is also in Death Grips. A member of Wavves is in Sweet Valley. Sweet Valley will be in Year of the Snitch confirmed.

lmfao. you do know that drumming is the backbone of any band, right? it's their purpose to act as a metronome no matter what genre
