Angelo you are great! Always beautiful songs. This was written by Battiato in 1980. Alice and Franco were big friends and collaborated for many years, singing amazing songs together (for example, search for "I treni di Tozeur"). In the '80s they had such a strong bond that people said they were secretly married :P
Nevskij Perspective is the walk along Nevskij river in St. Petersburg, the most italian place outside Italy (palaces and villlas over there are designed by italian designers or inspired by italian buildings). "Per Eisa" (the title recalling Beethoven's "Für Elise") is a song from Sanremo 1981. "Elisa" can be both a woman (a toxic love) or a metaphore for the heroine, which in the eighties was a huge problem all over the world.
I don't know if others already gave some information about the meaning of the song. But it is about scenery in Russia of 1920-1930 along the river Nevsky. The names mentioned there are of that time. I think this is my wife's favourite song of Battiato.
Carla bissi aka Alice in 1975 records her debut with the album where all the pieces are written by Stefano Dorazio drummer of the poohs with the name of Alice Visconti.
I know the word masterpiece is abused, but, if this is not a "Masterpiece" nothing is. The way Franco paint the scenery is minimalistic, with 2 or 3 hit of his brush he describes the place, the weather, the people in the end the mood of that age and bring us over there, in that cold stage. Alice, Alice is our Hermes, and I could not image a divinity better represented. She is a goddes by herself.
You have to interpret literally "The urinals placed under the beds for the night": the time reference of the song is the first decades of the 1900s, few houses had an internal toilet.
This is one of my favourite songs. Alice is sublime beauty. I actually I studied this song in my university. It is one of the most sophisticated poems by Battiato. Thank you for reacting to it. It would be great to react to cerco un centro di gravità by Battiato
I know nothing about music, but as far as I know Igor Stravinsky was a famous russian orchestra director and musician who is considered a pivotal figure in modern music. I became USA citizen since 1945. You can find more infos (in english) at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igor_Stravinsky
Battiato and Alice were closely related in the 80's and he wrote some song for her and she covered also some Battiato's song. Battiato often wrote his song inspired by some reading. I think this also the case but i don't know the book that inspired Battiato for this song. The ambient he described is in the period after the the bolshevic revolution in Russia. Igor Stravinsky is one of the best classic composer of the 20 century and Eisentein was a pioner of cinema. Both of them was really inspired by the revolution and for some year they were really entusiastic by the sovietic government. So they were really famous in Russia in that times.
this is an example of literature in music, another timeless legacy from maestro Franco Battiato. the song describes or rather imagines a training path for young people during the first times after the October revolution and describes their dreams, today we would say their illusions. The title refers to the road of the same name that runs through the city of St. Petersburg. The song is set in the Soviet Union, Alexander Newski Avenue was (and still is) a lively street in St. Petersburg characterized by rich and evocative scenery. At that time there were elements of freedom in the economy, in civil society, in the arts and there was also a space for individual initiative, albeit still under the control of the ruling Bolshevik Party. A period that ended with Lenin's premature death and Stalin's seizure of power. Some protagonists of the city's culture of those years are mentioned, who rose to the honors of world fame: Nijinski and the impresario of the Ballets Russes Diaghilev; Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Eisenstein and a film by him about the Russian revolution. The text ends by talking about the students' devotion towards their teachers, who gave them enlightenment during the darkness.

Nižinskij was a star of Classic ballet and was born in Kiev. Serghej Djagilev was the theatrical impresario the song talks about
