- Twelve O'Clock High is an American drama series set in World War II. This TV series originally broadcast on ABC-TV for two-and-one-half TV seasons from September 18, 1964, through January 13, 1967; was based on the motion picture Twelve O'Clock High (1949).

I remember watching this on T.V and though they was great. Now I am 66 and I am watching all of them all over again. I ended up joining the AF for 21 years
I joined USAF as RN at age 47 after attending 50 yr D-DAY reunion in France in 1994. Have always loved men, airplanes, my USA and guts. Thanks to all who serve in one way or another.
@phillip krikorianSo true. I have found all of combat and 12 oclock high on youtube to watch

I remember in '66, I wanted to be in the Air Force. We just enjoyed seeing for the first time air combat. We didn't care about the plot or messages in the episodes. We just wanted to see combat footage of the different planes. We made models of all the major planes of WWII Japan, German, Italian, British, Russian, and USA's. I knew for sure at age 12 I'd join the Air Force and upon HS graduation I did. 40 years later, I still love any type of aircraft!
I watched these episodes as a kid and I am now 60. Loving it all over again. Its a shame they don't make stories like this anymore.
Aww cmon, Kim Kardashian looking for her cell phone down the back of the lounge is considered riveting stuff now.
@phillip krikorian I'll be 65 in June. I remember watching Twelve O'Clock High with my dad (when I was grammar school age) while eating supper on Mom's new TV Dinner trays that she probably bought with S&H Green Stamps . The good ole days. LOL

I’m 61 and just discovered this a few months ago. I used to love this show when I was a little kid along with Combat.
Back then everybody’s dad, grandpa or uncle served in the war in one form or another.
Now all of those old boys are gone (ha ha we’re the old boys now !).
I’m very grateful somebody posted this series to enjoy and be reminded of their sacrifices.
I'm with you buddy
The B-17 was not only a beautiful aircraft, but durable as well.
A sad end for "Angel Babe" but she got her crew home safely.
No, not a sad end. She went out like a hero from Viking legend, in the tradition of the hero's funeral, immolation.
The last shot was straight out of "Citizen Kane" - "Rosebud!"
The modern airline industry can thank the B17 for their existence.
Love that Chris Robinson plays such a central role here.
The last time I saw this episode I was 11 years old. I'll be 59 in May. Thanks for the memories.
Richard Nye I sure wish they had stuck to a chronological order for this show . . . And more historically bases stories. I turned 59 in March. Some day I will get a ride in one of these old girls. I never did get a ride in one of the Navy C-130A's I worked on so long ago.

Roddy McDowell doing his absolutely PERFECT American accent again. 🤣
You have an exquisite sense of humor! His "Southern accent " is at least as good as Peter Fonda's
by far one of the best...... not only one of the best episodes, also one of the best stories.... a la Rod Serling ending. Thanks
@Terry Hawkins "Angel Babe" basically a re-tread of the old "Lorelei" script, kind of...
THE MUSIC SERNADE THE SOUL' quite appropriate i go to sleep every every night watching these episodes. I use to watch this when i
"Angel Babe" reminds me of a small Mazda 1.000 cc. coupe I had in Sydney back in 1972/73. She enjoyed racing other cars on the road and she could go up to 130-140 MILES per hour, she had two carburetors for her four cylinders. At other times she enjoyed the scenery and there was no way to push her over 30 mph. I still miss her. Regards
Yep.This episode triggered memories of two OLD C-130A's and my 1966 Ford Mustang with a 289 three speed tranny I found and restored (with a little help) in San Diego, CA 1976 . . . I could open a little tool box, pop the hood, ask her a couple of questions and fix ANYTHING in a few hours. Gave her a '64 Falcon 4 speed transmition once and she could do 93 in the quarter mile without taking off tire tread. Selling her was something I never forgave my ex-husband for, especially considering the low price he got.
Off a cliff...perhaps but 1 litre engine pushing those speeds... LOL
Similar feelings from my brand new first year 1986 RX7. Sticks are so fun to drive.
Mazda's have always had a reputation as immortal cars that just refuse to die
One of the best episodes ever. Loved it!
This is my favorite episode. I was an engineer myself. I never saw combat and didn't fly the same aircraft every time. but I bacame attached to to my aircraft. So I like this episode a lot.
In the book “The wild blue”. The B-24 plane crews had to fly 25 missions out of Italy. If a plane made it to 25 missions it was probably a total wreck. It was not unusual for a plane not to take off because it was too heavy with bombs and equipment.
and fuel
Watched a doco a while back where an old vet said they would cane down the runway then lift the landing gear, with the drag reduced they could get an overloaded Lanc into the air. Those old dudes had balls.
When this series was filmed there were still a number of airworthy B-17's. I think the studio had seven aircraft and they painted diffferent markings on each side of the tails, etc. to shoot footage of an entire squadron. Probably only a couple of planes actually left the ground.
One of my favorite TOH episodes from the T.V. series. Roddy McDowall is fantastic in this one!!
I always have big respect to every airmen wherever they are
I wish the series was all in color and I wish I could have met Paul burke in person
i love black and white tv. also when they went over to color most of the combat footage stuck out like a sore thumb.
Thanks for posting these ! This is one of my top 15 favorites. I'm so glad Mr. McDowall did this episode.
For anyone out there who may not believe it, let me inform you that airplanes DO have personalities!
Good ole' Major Harvey Stovall.
100% squared away, except when he isn't, which is very, very, rare.
This is the best episode yet!
What an AMAZING episode!!!
In 1976, at a squadron picnic, I remember my commanding officer and squadron maintenance Chief talking about our two old, cranky, four T-56 engine with three blade prop C-130A's. Chief Weaver and Commander Cole agreed that both of them were clinking, clanking, collections of approximately 1.37 million individual, well used, second hand parts vibrating patiently in a barely calibratable formation.
Please understand that we all loved those old birds in spite of the headaches. However, since we had all been drinking, and past experiences dictated the precautions, the aircraft were not in attendence for that reason.
Those were the days. . .the Chief never allowed anyone to read the manuals out loud in front of those birds either !
"...vibrating patiently in a barely calibratable formation." Brilliant!!
These airplanes inherit a spirit . It is hard to explain and to understand . But it is there . Thank you .
When that PR guy said "Just an airplane" even before the characters reacted my chest tightened up a bit
"w...t...f did he just say about those 10 men's home away from home?"
Somebody should had taught these guys how to salute
I agree.
Hand salute . . . ready front ! 🇺🇸

So long, Angel Babe. So long.
This is the best episode of the entire series. This episode was one of only two episodes that were about the B-17s and the men who flew them.
Oh please !!

Roddy McDowell's voice sounds like a cross between Robert DeNiro's 'Max Katy' and Mrs. Doubtfire
Irritating as hell.
This series was all over the map as far as time line went. I seriously doubt that ANY Flying Fortress flew "fifty missions over Germany" - maybe fifty missions, total but at the beginning of the war they weren't flying those deep penetration raids; they were lucky to hit sub pens or railroad yards in France.
Look up the Nine-0-Nine

Roddy McDowell in this one . Damn near all of Hollywood has been in this series
During the opening scene I was thinking " Is that Roddy McDowall ?" sure enough I was right !
yep, that was Rowdy McDowelstick.

@Terry Hawkins Sadly, screwed out of an Academy Award for his performance as Octavian, because of some kind of "re-catorization" of the Best Supporting Actor category. Damn Shame! He was excellent in his portrayal of him.

Rest, Dominic Frontiere! Dec. 2017
I am glad that somebody finally recognized this man's incredible music contribution to this, and many other series that he did ! R.I.P., Dom!
I count 48..., plus, during the dive, the plane was parallel to the cloud surface. Still a great story.
I noticed that too. A truly cheap camera angle trick
They were probably using actual footage so only so much you can do with historical footage
Frank Aletter who plays the cameraman also showed up in another episode as Lt. Col William Christie who aborted a mission (rightly so) and was almost court martialled. That episode also starred Barry Sullivan as Col. Gallagher's father.
That episode with Barry Sullivan was excellent.
Indeed, one of the shows finest.
He was married to Lee Meriwether .

good episode...kind of a eerie ending ; like the angel babe committed suicide...
I agree. It was one of the better episodes for the second season. Lansing and Burke were two different commanders. Both equally good in there own way.
And I agree with you.
That last scene looked kinda like one of our old pit fires their at Lakenheth we used for training!
If I had a B-17 that I thought was 'alive' with mood swings, I'd name her Christine.
Episode "Lorelei". I do believe machines have personality. Their own "little quirks".
Number 3 engine always fails.
Great job Angel Babe
It's common for people to anthropomorphize machines. We can become sentimental and attached to them. My first car was like that. There were all these little things that I knew how to do with that car that some other person wouldn't know. So - when it got wrecked I felt a sense of loss.
Another thing about old machinery - is that it's seen some pretty hard use and it's not at all surprising that it might start falling apart - with - as mentioned one problem possibly causing another.
The other thing is - it would be uncommon for these aircraft to fly - with every single part on them working. With them pushing to have as many aircraft as they could - these were going to be aircraft that had all the important stuff online but not necessarily everything in working order.
.
Angel Babe reminds me of the type of horse that can only be ridden by a dominant personality that knows how to control without cruelty.
Don't know about you but that dive was awesome, didn't think they'd recover.
That plane reminds me of my car....only it hasn't blown up.....yet.
Roddy McDowall used the same Southern accent like in the TV "No Time for Sergeants".
That's no accent any Southerner would recognise. 😮
@@cristywyndham-shaw5111 true....
Gotta love the 50 star flags on the jackets!!
Seriously, did they make that mistake?
I think I picked that up at 12:12 mark. Viewers wouldn't have spotted that on their 1964 TV sets and they wouldn't have been looking for it, anyway. Still a dumb mistake and avoidable since the 50 star flag was only five years old at the time. Older patches with the 48 star flag should have been stocked at the studio wardrobe dept.
I saw both 48 and 50 star flags. at 12:12 mark was a 48 star, but later Gallagher had a 50 star flag.
@@robertkelley4991You're correct, at 19:45 the lieutenant's flag patch has 50 stars.
Looks like a 6 by 8 array to me . That's 48.
First B-17 to fly 50 missions was "Hell's Angels' , 303 Bomb Group . I believe . Became known as the " Hell's Angels" bomb group . U. S. A. A . F. , 8th A. F. Thank you .
2_21 This reminds a lot at the movie MEMPHIS BELLE
16_12 ANGEL BABE shurly stands nowdays in WARHOUSE 13/14 ;;)
Every generation has PR people....too bad. Love Roddy McDowell and miss the guy. In every activity I've been involved in from athletics to construction men have harbored good luck "superstitions" and they will continue to.
Something tells me... probably the film cameras in the opening scenes ... that "Angel Babe" is codename for "Memphis Belle".
"No, I just shoot the film, Sarge."
"Someone else keeps the facts straight."
Thought she might be the Memphis Belle--but The Belle only flew 25 missions
don haines
All I know is I took a tour of a flying B-17 at Republic Airport Farmingdale Long Island. I don't think you could be more than 5'4" and 125 pounds to get into the tail gunner's seat or the ball turret. The plane is much smaller than it looks. You really can't stand up straight inside unless you are short. My shoulders are too wide to get into the tail gunner's seat and I'm 5'7". That same plane just crashed and burned I heard. I thought it was the only one left flying.
Funny. I read about a pilot, later general, who was 6ft 6, and flew B17s.
@@dannyhonn973 That's the cockpit!
That airplane was 909, belonging to the Collings Foundation. I took a ride in it about 2 years before it crashed In Connecticut.
Back then writers knew how to tell a story.
The Nose Art was too 60,s Hippy Chic..
Look at how they do the art in those days, its not dissimilar at all, you're clutching at straws, yes the female characters hair was too 60's to match the war era, we already know that, but making a beef about the damn nose art? Come on
Perhaps the most stupid & silly episode so far, but lovely.
I'm a sailor and know a good yacht is far more than just a machine, even though common sense and everything else says that is all it is. I can easily believe aircraft are the same.
The music on here sounds exactly like Star trek music
kHarker has a big mouth.'
"I guess we all do Sir, it's what makes an air corps."
I think Quinn Martin more than a few mistakes. So Gallagher actually said Wilshelmshaven was tomorrow’s mission. Over the phone?
Memphis Belle was the first B-17 to fly 25 missions minimal casualties ,not like the movie . She be longed to the 91st Bomb Group , 322 squadron , I. Believe . Thank you .
Rod Serling directed this one...
44:41 they should have called this my mother the car
Roddy McDowell
3:35 to 3:55 Feeling that Star Trek vibe for sure
Yes this statement is very close . B-17 , pending on the model type ,70.000 to 100,000 parts . Take a look at this Queen of the Skies . There are about 12 flying or in museums in the U. S. A. . World wide , 2 in Britain . Thank you.
At 9:15 I though I saw a B-17 with a twin mount on the nose of one of the B17. Why was two of the planes taxing for take off with the two inboard engines secured?
John Moore Different models ( B-17G was the most produced if I remember right) of the B-17 had different machine gun configurations and placements, more guns in newer models, fewer in the older, modified armour, ect. Some of the planes even had toilets at one time ! (They were removed after the planes got to an active war zone because that was NOT a good idea.)Are you sure they were taking stations for take-off ? It's not usual for any multi engine bird to head for its hardstand/ramp assignment when returning from a flight with just enough power to move.
E1 should dress up in ape suits when angel babe lands ...lol
I lost art making shows like this nowadays TV is just crap I remember watching this when I was a junior high and 13 years old still brings back a lot of fond memories and all we had was a black and white TV then sometimes colors just not worth it
Anyone else notice that Angel Babe had only 31 missions on her nose (one bomb outline/mission).
Maybe they weren't allowed to mess with the original art if it was genuine
SO WHAT?
Cool ending
By this time in the war, according to episode three, P 51s were in service providing long range fighter cover on missions. So why the P 38s and where are the 51s? Any help on this one?
When they dive at ~33 minutes, #3 looks to be turning.
If it is feathered it will turn I believe
Not at that RPM!!!
They always have someone chewing gum in these shows. and there's no way you'd say an upcoming target over the phone!

Anybody keeping count?
You're right. Now I'm keeping score.
I've only seen Roddy McDowall in a couple of TV series episodes and a Columbo episode, and in all of themm he seemed to play the same sort of weird, quirky persona. Was that his standard character in his extensive career of roles, or did he have a wider array of styles as well?
He did offer a wider range but you're right it seemed like "quirky" was the preference of the TV people.
Check him out in his "child actor" roles in 40s movies.
For a laugh, Roddy McDowall in makeup does a promotional for his brief Planet Apes TV show on Carol Burnett ca 1974. It should be on You Tube, it's very well done.
@@AdmiralNelson1000 Yeah, I recently saw "The Pied Piper," in which Roddy was 13, and he played it straight and serious, and really well. If you never saw it, I strongly suggest it. It is a delightfully charming and warm film.

Greetings, thank you for your note.
You know, just a casual consideration of Roddy's roles will ALWAYS seem to show eccentric roles. I was hard pressed to come up with anything for you that was reasonably familiar. I went to IMDb and found a considerable number of early roles listed including the old "juvenile" parts and lots of early TV dramatic roles not easy to collect now. Some early 50s movies seemed to be comedy and musical and I haven't seen those.
Maybe what stands out on occasion with Retro are his "tragic" roles.
Twilight Zone 's goofy "Sam Conrad" , the much put upon astronaut in "People Are Alike All Over" (if you haven't seen it yet I won't spoil it; at least HIS character "fares better" than the other spaceman). This view of "Mars" came from the old pulp magazines.
Some people I know found it to be "fun". But LESS so was his appearance in, maybe the second(?) INVADERS episode, which true to that series' form can really give a guest role a BAD time. Roddy just gets clobbered in that one and I usually pass it by now.
He also got "Spear and Sandal" parts in high concept historical roles like CLEOPATRA (villain) and in Greatest Story Ever Told (apostle).
Lots of 70s TV parts including Mystery Movie roles and yes, it's likely he was the eccentric villain.
If I haven't mentioned it yet, please note RM's guest spot on the Carol Burnett Show in which he appears fully made up for his Planet of the Apes TV role (both CBS). It's on You Tube and I found it purely by accident.
Leo Smart
I ALMOST forgot--- Roddy may have had a key dramatic role in a SUSPENSE THEATER episode called WINE DARK SEA about a down and out professional who attempts a climb back up. This Suspense Theater is the color show from 63/65 and some of those can be found on line. I've followed this on occasion because of the great animated opening titles and the John ("Johnny") Williams theme music.
(Note that some syndication prints call the show "Crisis").
Roddy McDowell has always been creepy. Weird old Hollywood guy…
Ya know its an odd thing for me as I wasnt around when this was on televison. I cant help but think about all those giys who did this for real having to aviod the dam tv so they could sleep at night. Just dosent seem to be something to make a tv show over.
How does a bomber fly forward into it's own bomb explosions?
Ridiculous to have Flight Engineer talk so to Colonel Pilot.
'It certainly do . . . ', great english ! 💀

Roddy McDowell was always a bit of a weird duck.
He was in The Longest Day too right?
* Googles *
Yep, guy with the glasses on Omaha beach whos Sgt died next to him
All that for a train?
After a round trip bombing mission; there should not been much fuel on board it to cause an explosion like that. just my opinion.
Sabotage!
Angel Babe: "NO! I don't want to!!"
Aren't near-empty tanks full of fumes more of an explosion hazard than full tanks?
They had enough fuel for 4 engines and for half the flight they only used 2.
Hey it’s a drama with a lot of poetic justices thrown in for the gullible audiences......
How is it possible to drop bombs & have them explode in front of the plane?
Peter Browne As they fall from the plane, they are going forward at the same speed as the plane, so they should go forward somewhat until gravity slows them. So they really can't explode in front of the plane, as you said. Either bombs from a plane in front or ... ta-da ... another Hollywood miracle that defies physics. 😆
@@kathyyoung1774 Isn't about in front of the plane, its about being hit by shockwaves and shrapnel of own bombs, which with the detonation behind, below you can still happen when too close, that was just shoddy effects editing
