Why You Should Play OLD GAMES
Vložit

- Recently, I’ve played a number of old games from the early 2000s, and for better and worse it has been quite a memorable experience. As more and more of them start to disappear, I wanted to make this video to show some people why many of them are still worth playing today.
I apologize for another late video; I underestimated my workload in the current semester, so a new video every two weeks was too ambitious. It will likely be every three weeks instead, maybe even just monthly.

I replay stuff like Baldurs Gate 2, Doom , Deus Ex , Final Fantasy tactics and Metal gear 3 they are still better than most things made today.

I love that how you stated them "things" instead of "games" because that's what they've become now without soul and love put into it. Gaming culture has fallen off cliff since 2020s. At least we have Japanese publishers as final hope saving the day
@@saurabhpathakYT What are you talking about? We just came off 2023, one of the best years of gaming ever, and 2024 is good so far too. Hell, even 2022 had GOW Ragnarok, Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West
@@anonymousperson8903Huh, another year with massive layoffs, studio shutdowns, record losses..and only a bunch of good games! lol. If that's your standard of best year for games, no wonder the industry is screwed. You might wanna take a look at 2012, 2014 and 2015 actual best years of gaming.
@@saurabhpathakYT As in, it was a great year for games. You were trashing the games, calling them 'things', when it was a great year for quality releases. I know it was a bad year for layoffs.
I love replaying old games that I first played 10 to 20+ years ago. It's like a comfortable place or visting an old friend where you know what to expect.
One point worth mentioning, replaying old games on PC fully maxed out and high framerate? *chefs kiss
What pc do you recommend for that ?
@@ad_stayfly7 It really depends on what you want to play and what display you have. I have a 1080p display so I opted for an RTX 3060 (A popular 1080P card) and it suits me very well. Plays everything up to the 8th gen maxed at 100+ FPS, current gen games less so but still 60 FPS at the very least and completely playable.
If you really wanted to narrow things down, consider the latest/newest game you would want to play, check the recommended system requirements and go from there.
I emulate old games, 4k, wow, just wow. The best of both worlds
Yeah it's great - though some old games tend to fall apart at higher framerates
@@schafsinn Thankfully it's more of an exception than a rule. Across the board you can reliably play what were 30 FPS games at 60 FPS (at the bare minimum).
The modding community has only gotten better with fan patches over the years too!
"you should play old games"
proceeds to show games i consider new. :S
😅
I mean if you think 10-20 year old games are new that's on you blud more power to you though
@@jimjohnson6944 oh def, it's on me. I've been a solid gamer ever since but went to PC and got stuck on those games that require all your time, wow, mc, Factorio
Edit, come to think of it they are all about that old too. Where does the time go
Everything released on PS4 is new in my book, but for the sake of argument I'd say anything that's older than roughly a decade is "old", otherwise - nah. The generational divide between PS2 and PS3 vs PS4 and PS5 is incomparable and I feel like there's barely any difference between playing a game from a year ago vs playing a game from 2014-2015 like TW3. Like RDR2 came out 6 years ago and it's still by far the most immersive open world still. I feel the same way with movies too, there's people who think a movie from before covid is deemed "old" which is wild to me considering since avengers became the most profitable shit and covid slowed everything down we had an absurdly low amount of top tier film in the last four or so years.
Hahahaha I was just thinking that 😂. The worst part is…. It’s technically true 😢.
I replay metal gear solid and resident evil 2 yearly, they just represent a certain point in my life and I just adore them so much. It's like going home.
That's wonderful!
Played recently metro and metro last light for the first time. What a great experience, and really refreshing not being an open world
These games are still kinda newish. Pre-3D had a lot of interesting concepts and punching weight above their capacity, which made for some impressive experiences back when we didn't take graphics for granted and games were also allowed to be more than what they look.
Just played a ton of 8 and 16 bit RPGs (Western and Japanese). Those things were phenomenal!
Yeah, I do see the argument that these aren't all that old. This is just my subjective perception of course, not being that old myself and not having played anything that came out before 1998.
Do you have any particular games in mind from the "pre-3D" era?
*I just want good remasters....Deus Ex 1, True Crime NYC, Godfather 2....LOOVVEEE the GTA Trilogy so much* 😍
I dig the 10 minute vid length. Short to the point. No 2h tearful sonatas about playing games :D
MGS1 is an Beautiful MasterPiece with so many Wall Breaking Moments and Epic Moments
The algorithm knows me.
I'm completely into old(er) games this year. Finished Ratchet and Clank 1, Mini Ninjas, The Darkness, Dante's Inferno, and Asura's Wrath so far.
Gears of War 1 and NFS:U are coming next.
This is a great video :D
I especially appreciated the love you gave to MGS2 and Prince Of Persia with the ability to tell people to play these old games without just getting up and taking a shit on modern gaming like everyone else. Great work, keep it up :)
Thank you, I really appreciate that! 🙏
I agree, playing both old and new games makes one appreciate certain genres and series even more. And sometimes, it is also quite refreshing and rewarding to replay old games and see how your own perspective changed. I'm a bit older now so I of course also include games from the 80s as much as games from the 2010s. I've only recently discovered new favorites on my childhood system - 1989s Faxanadu on the NES -, got into late 2009s Uncharted 2 for the first time in 2022, currently playing Mario & Luigi Dream Team Bros from 2013 which I just bought last week, modded an OG Xbox to revisit early 2000s western gaming... all while also still being excited about new releases and also enjoying all those Indies which take direct inspiration from older eras and currently, lots of PS1/N64 throwbacka.
I couldn't agree more 🙏
Don't worry I have been playing them for many years and don't plan on stopping.I bought a PS5 and yet I have just been playing the Ultima games recently and plan on playing more.
I fucking love randomly picking up a ps2/ps3 era AA/AAA japanese game on a whim and playing through it at least a couple times a year. There's always some jank, outdated graphics, bizarre decisions but they're often such unique and memorable experiences both as far as gameplay system and storytelling choices go. Like recently played through Resonance of Fate and it's some of the most fun with a JRPG I've had in years. Not only is the combat and weapon customization one of a kind but the storytelling is often hilarious with one of the characters being Nolan North's incredible performance.
The whole point of me starting this alternate account was to keep up with console modding so i could play all the classics that i missed. So far I've played Bayonetta, Wind Waker, NFL 2K5, God of War, multiple Final Fantasy games, and After Burner (NES) and i cant ve happier. I still enjoy my PS5, but i made the right choice.
Because it's a beautiful world of cool DX8-9-10-11 graphics, best facial animations and memorable voice actors
I remember playing Prince of Persia Sands of Time on Xbox in high school. It was incredible. Playing MGS on PS1 in middle school was life-changing and made me understand what games were going to be in the future. Also, it was a time when I was becoming conscious of world affairs so the themes were fitting. Shinobi on PS2 is another game you should check out. Extremely smooth game play with rhythmic action. I started playing the first Dark Souls a few weeks ago and I'm loving it so far. I finally finished Mass Effect in 2020 since I never completed it on PS3 many years ago. I recently got the Legendary Edition for Series X and I'm looking forward to playing ME2 and ME3. Thanks for the video.
F-Zero my go to at the moment
Nostalgia, music, gameplay...❤️
POP every enemy have specific weakness to it, u gotta find that out to make it easier,
Gray enemies are immune to wall attacks but can be 1 hit kill by jump attack and dagger absorb
Red enemies are immune to jump attacks and dagger absorb and but can be killed by wall attacks
Blue enemies are weak to everything but 1 wall attacks can stun them.
in layman terms GIT GUD "HEHEHEHE" :3
but again Great video
Joke is on modern AAA devs because I have enough old games in my backlog to never buy a new game again if it isn't worth every penny.
Mgs2 is my fave ps2 game. For me the best games to recover are WIPEOUT, BURNOUT… those simple ARCADE GAMES with great music and cool aesthetics. Now racing games are graffiti gangsta parodies. Bring back 90s feel and techno ❤
I own all the latest consoles, and being so bored of triple A games, I bought myself a Steam Deck, DS and a 3DS and between all the 3 I'm playing amazing retro games, Zelda, Castlevania, MGS, PS2 and PS3 games and I feel like I am falling in love with gaming again.
Don't get me wrong, I feel like I will play the occasional triple A game, but as it stands right now I'only using my PS5 to play FN, Overwatch and DBD. I'm totally infatuated with brilliant retro and indy games atm.
There is one game I know of that has never been remade: The New Tetris (AKA Square Tetris) from N64. That was the first video game that I played thanks to a friend, and I got that system strictly for that game. As far as I know, Square Tetris has been on a few other collection versions, but only playable for a limited time like three minutes.
Sweet baby Inc makes me want to play old games! 😅
Couldn't agree more man. Things were so different before this last decade or so :(
Nothing seems to feel as self contained and cosy as games used to. Sands of Time is a good start here, fantastic game from when Ubisoft seemed to care.
I no longer look forward to new games for the most part becuase most of the time the releases leave you disapointed nowadays
And funny enough I've bought a psvita and plan to play games on that when it arrives
Time splitter 3 future perfect is just amazing
This is what I've been doing lately just simply playing games that interest me no matter which console or handheld they originally released on
I think that make sense.
Ben playing tf outta max payne 3 and prototype 1 and 2,its relaxing and fun at the same time
I agree I like old games I'm playing the game I never tried yet
Im playing the ezio collection on ps5. Going great so far.
SNES is as old as I'll go, anything older than that and I personally can't get into it
I'm sorry fam. If enough people see this video, this comment might turn into an 8-bit appreciation thread lol
There are some 8-bit gems (the legend of zelda link's awakening, super mario bros 3, kirby's adventure, wonder boy 3 and some of the arcades like Tetris that are absolute masterpieces with beautiful game design) , but there are a lot of truly ambitious games that aged kinda poorly, like the two first metroid, or some of the 8 bit pc games like elite.
You should play old gsmed of all generations.
I prefer older games now. Less bullshit compared to modern games. Hell, I enjoy playing Doom 1 and that game is older than I am. lol
Way ahead of you I have an entire Xbox 360 game collection to be played before the marketplace shuts down.
💪
Just Played Sonic Heros and Star Fox 3D emulated
I'm ALWAYS playing "old" games, especially PS1 games, that gen was something else. I'm kind of into that retro stuff: original hardware, CRTs, retro cables, collecting, etc. Tho i still play and love recent games, i'm just more selective. Elden Ring and RE4 Remake were my latest modern games and i enjoy both. Played Valkyrie Profile and Dragon Quest 8 between those two, also good games.
Everyone should play the first 3 mgs 🥺
currently watching this whilst playing pokemon blue on a dmg, of course i agree lol
I started playing jrpgs 3 years ago because i got bored of AAA games. I got so bored of it, i almost decided to quit gaming. I haven't bought a modern game since then, it's only jrpgs for me now.
I cannot place the theme in the background but im sure I played the game. Pillars of Eternity? Baldurs Gate 3?
Haha it definitely isn't either of those. Could you tell me the timestamp? Then I can tell you what it is
Born in the early 80s. Old games were made with love, creativity and challenge because the limitations.
Ok but I think you should play Shenmue 1 and 2
Final fantasy IV remastered Ds on a modded 3ds 🤟🏻
"It's just nostalgia. Gaming is better than ever."
I think it depends on what genre you like some genre still get good games but stuff like 3d platformers and arcade racing games have all but dried up so I would say in certain areas it’s way worse now then in the past.
Shame you didnt like MGS1. I also didnt like it at first, but when I learned how to get around enemies the game quickly grew on me. Also. Why in the world would you play it in scheisse language?
I realized too late that the PS Vita version of it, in the German PSN store, only had the German dub 😭
I actually just started playing it on the ps1 maybe an hour or two into the game and maybe some problems arise later but so far the gameplay feels very responsive and smooth and the the checkpoints are very fair so idk maybe the vita version is just terrible.
if you haven’t played ICO then you should prioritise it over any new game.
Maybe I should
they are not going to disapear there are emulators and websites with games download unless there is no longer internet and web they are safe
8:13 - 8:20 whats that game?
It's the Demon's Souls Remake
Naah...we love graphics
These are not old games. These are "middle" games from the very ugly post-DOS era, before the super-powerful GPUs; most of the presented are relatively C*APPY ones.
Old is Atari 2600
Sorry you had me until you defined old games... quote, 90s 2000s. 80s 90s are old games. Atari asteroids, maze craze. Nes rpgs, sure snes has great ones to. But also old pc games in 80s 90s.
I mean, ultimately it's very subjective how you categorize "old games", so I totally get if you wouldn't consider early 2000s games to be old. To me they are, especially considering how much quicker games have evolved since then compared to movies (for example).
It’s a hard pill to swallow but 2000 was 24 years ago if you don’t think that’s old at this point then maybe some self reflection is needed.
@@hercb4388 it's not that. 20 years itself is the start of old as it's a generation. 30 be more accurate, or more. The gaming history video games is only like 50 years old itself. So 20 is not even half of that.
@@sagepirotess6312
belonging only or chiefly to the past; former or previous. This is the definition of old and I think the fact that all the 2000s consoles are no longer supported they would classify as old there is nothing present about them they only exist in the past.
@@hercb4388 well that logic would be debatable. I mean the switch is playing all those games, Atari 2600. That new one plays all.
When I think old, I dont generally think of the console itself but the games or ips associated with it. As many never got rereleased or forgotten to time.
Pc ports are not good
how to hack PS3
you mentioned the horrible german metal gear dub.
No mention of the jak and Daxter trilogy?? Huge L
They don’t hold up brother
@@Oneforall20871 how so? Have you even given the trilogy a good playthrough or do you simply have no taste?
I haven't played those games, and I tried to talk mostly about games that I have played (in this video). But I'm sure they're great!
@@schafsinn if you like prince of Persia you're going to love the J&D trilogy. Seriously a masterpiece
@@johnnywoodstock You know, I don't get it when people like the homie above say certain older games don't hold up. People played them then, 2 years later, 7 years later etc and had fun. I never hear people saying movies from the 60s don't hold up, or old comics, or even games from the 80s. But for some reason, Jak and Daxter "doesn't hold up" which is wild to me considering most of these modern games can't even match Jak in terms of gameplay fun, creativity and character.
why you should play old games.... because new games sucks
Old games are better that's why. Zero woke just fun gameplay.
Nah gaming has never been better than in 2024.
Thats why im going all in..emulation and retrogaming 🎉🎉 cheaper and way better
