#RLBurnside - Live 1984
From "R. L. Burnside with Johnny Woods (Live 1984, 1986)" DVD
R. L. Burnside (November 23, 1926 - September 1, 2005) was an American #blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. He played music for much of his life but received little recognition before the early 1990s. In the latter half of that decade, Burnside recorded and toured with Jon Spencer, garnering crossover appeal and introducing his music to a new fan base in the punk and garage rock scenes.

Yeah, makes you want to see what's attached to him, think I'd like him.
Thanks a million
One of the most underrated blues musicians ever. A true legend
Had the pleasure of seeing RL in Australia in the early 90's - after the Dave Stewart doco. "Deep Blues" was released. He was with a couple of other artists. At the end - the audience (1/2 full venue) asked him back for an encore. He asked what we wanted him to play. The audience answer - to a person was "Play anything - we just want to listen."
Signed autographs - came across as a very humble man. He got a terrific ovation from an appreciative audience.
Honest Blues
underrated by who?
Lukas Lysiak in the sense he isn’t as well known as the likes of Lighting Hopkins, BB King etc
@@b.i.g.brothersinguitars249 He is a great technique guitarist, but "just" a follower. The really big ones were able to present something unique and innovative that made them stand out. It lacks the spark. I feel that way, but I may be wrong.
Another one of CZcams's little treasures, this.
+Mic Tod so true :) we all cherrish on own little collection of diamonds ^^
Yes.
Amen
Gem !
Karl Childers learn trigonometry and hate math
I was lucky enough to have seen R.L. live back in 1997 in a bar in Oxford Ms. He had a four piece electric band and brought the house down. The word on the street was when Mr Burnside was in town it was not to be missed and that was the truth!
You and I might have seen the same set list. How much "well, well, well...." did you get?
That rhythm on the first song is incredible. People complain about CZcams but it has definitely enriched my life ❤️🎸🎸
People that complain watch the wrong shit
Ya gotta sift through the shit to find gold.
CZcams is only garbage if you watch garbage....I've learned a ton and found music, film & conversation that would be very hard to come across outside of this platform.🎉
@@danielvalleduarte Indeed! It's algorithm-driven, so people who watch and comment on videos they don't like keep getting served that sort of thing. My feed is great, and there's several lifetimes of interesting stuff.
I think you tube is one of the most amazing things for me. It'll find me what I'm looking for, present me with this that or the other thing, some of which is so good it blows my mind. This video? I didn't look for it or ask for it. It just slid on up there. I'm about to post it on FB to turn others onto this guy. Is he playing open tunings?
No fluff, no fancy electronics, just rhythm and soul.
captofthestrad no electronics?..... Look closer.......
Damn Right !!
@@adriannasanchez468 He said no 'fancy' electronics. Most acoustic guitars now have an add-on - or built-in - pickup, especially when they are singing on a mike.
No billions guitar pedals plugged
captofthestrad have mercy
That vocal inflection he uses at the end of a phrase, the shuffle, the phrasing. It’s all pure gold. RL Burnside should have a national holiday in his name.
Would certainly beat pride month
@@Baker68 It's not a competiton, you can have your R.L. Burnside month just as Pride can have theirs.
well done mr.
I'd love to know if he us playing in open E tuning
@@jayphillips4167 , let's make it competitive. I vote for R.L. Burnside, over the fruits.
The most underrated smile, you could tell he loves what he's doing!
Yeah, that grin and his mellow musicianship and soft and easy voice has it all.
best buckteeth this side of Bluesville, yup
The beauty of r.l. Burnside was his genuine indifference to fame and money, he had little to no interest in it. He was a bluesman in its purest form. His rhythm style sets the bar for all who try to imitate him. He was a true master of his craft, well seaso ned, this man truly lived the blues and it was obvious in his music. I'm still mesmerized by his playing . I often imitate his finger style rhythms. It just don't get any more blues than r.l. burnside.
Burnside is good...but Lightnin Hopkins is king of country blues
@@jimberlygridder183 It's two different styles no?
@@karstenhammerhansenyes completely different,.

Laid back, total groove, no gun slinger attitude. How beautiful he was.
piro mittig yeah. A Real person.
He killed a dude with a gun, though.
@@Captain_Neckbeard That’s collateral.
Like bo diddley you mean?
Such an infectious smile! The dude was a genius
so right you are...extra rare smile
Look at his pupils and you might get an idea why he was smiling!
Pupils coke for sure. Saucers.
@Owen Harris Just because it's easy to play doesn't make him any less of a musical genius. It's not all about how hard something is.
@@andrewwabik5125 yeah. You could have steve vai play this and you would be bored out your fucking skull.
Pure music in its purest form. Gorgeous rythm and a voice that cries out dispair. A simple guitar and a big talent make the difference.
The more I immerse myself in the blues and study music, the more I realize that this guy was the real deal. I mean R. L. Burnside... how badass is the name alone?? 🤘🏻🤘🏻
and a loooooot of work..
I like dispair: like a mix of despair and disrepair ? I'll take it !
Somehow sounds like a review from the 50’s.
Man is a resourceful being.. A guitar... a set of lungs and a pair of vocal cords.. producing an entire orchestra of sound.. You'd think there were drums..and fiddles but no.. it's all one man two hands and his voice.. Amazing... Talent to the bone.. Thanks for posting... The Beat of Life !
Well put thoughts about what this music reveals about what it is un the best sense a human being
Such a true and great statement.....

That goofy smile made me smile every time. This guy is golden. So genuine!
I thought I was the only one. Man you should play with a name like birch Weber! That’s damn blues name!
@@bluestogreen1693 Lol, thanks bro.
There's nothing goofy about this man's smile. He's lived hard and claimed a life: “I didn't mean to kill nobody, I just meant to shoot the sonofabitch in the head. Him dying was between him and the Lord.” My point is that he's not shucking and jiving for our pleasure.
@@TheMAJArmor I said he's genuine, not "jiving for our pleasure". Didn't say there wasn't a lot of pain behind the smile because, as you point out, the lyrics clearly show such. But he does have a smile with great character, and it does make me smile. Just a passing comment with a positive take, not ignorant to the reality the pain in the world.
@@TheMAJArmor Don't be a stupid, boy. BirchWeber didn't say that to offend our great R.L. But you really don't know how to interpret a thinking, bud
This is the blues right here
He was born like this. Blessed. I'm glad and honored crossing on the same bridge between centuries as this fellow. Great musician.
It's nice but I also hate this sort of sentiment you neglect the hours days weeks months years decades of experience it takes to get this good. Talent doesn't exist this is man that worked so hard and honed his craft for so long.
The more you watch the better he gets.
like a good whisly
When the booze kicks in Haha
R.L. Burnside is my favorite blues musician
me too
my 3rd favorite
Jingles466 count me in Jingles. R. L.'s my favorite too. Real Deal Burnside. This is a wealth of cultural treasure. He's a cool breeze, come and gone. Like no other - and never will there be.
Jingles466 i woould say blues magician:)
Jingles466 me too...
I saw R L Burnside in there early 90s , brought him a beer while he was playing and gave it to him , he smiled with a grin had a sip .. and than played on... Great night a true Blues man.. 10/10.
Amazing... bass, rhytham , and lead...all on 1 guitar.
quovadis1952 Mississippi John Hurt
When I played Mississippi Fred McDowell for an older co-worker, he thought it was 2 or 3 guys on guitar. These riffs are very basic and simple; anyone can learn them. The real trick is in the right-hand technique, which is not easy to master and get it to sound right without tangling up the rhythm and lead. Look up a Son House video - his right hand is flailing away and you can't imagine how he possibly hitting the strings.
Yea, The Sonster, MS John Hurt, Skip James all world.
John the Revelator, Death Letter Blues oh and some Blind Lemon.
Robert Smith death letter
Fell down a good CZcams rabbit hole tonight. Yes indeed.
indeed
Absolute amazing. I hear today for the first time of this Talent. Omg
I love his Songs. I love the Blues. I don’t listen the Blues only, i feel the Blues. I‘m the Blues :)
Years of house parties, playing in juke joints and friends houses. He mastered the craft and developed the driving perfect rhythms over droning strings. Genius.
mississippi blues in it's purest form.i still say he should have been more famous.

Great music, pure blues. Love it.
It's good to live in a world where Burnside had a chance to express his art. I appreciate this...

Love his music. Immense talent in such a humble man.

Edit: I’ve listened to this 1 to two times a day for the past week or two. Absolutely love it.
Amazing sounds coming from one voice and an acoustic guitar! And it’s hypnotic to boot! This guy was great! 🎸😎👏🏻

His style of slide is so amazing...and those subtle hammer ons. Great guitar playing and great voice.
Maybe the greatest CZcams video Ive ever seen.....
Ten gościu to geniusz. Pozdrawiam wszystkich z Polski.
The crazy thing is his musical career didn't really take off until about 10 years after this performance - much love R.L.
What a groove. These blues men really got it down packed. Drums bass coming out of one guitar sounds great
The guitar really is incredible. I think the piano is maybe the only instrument that's as versatile.
I just had to comment this right here... For almost seven years
.. from the first time I heard Poor Black Mattie by the greatest of the Hill Country masters... After countless tutorial videos by youtube instructors, countless hours of studying RL playing it.. And still just not getting it right.. Even after reaching out to his grandson Cedric and Cedric Burnside Project guitarist at the time Trenton Ayers.. And getiijg some tips from Ced and even some one on one video tutoring fom Trenton, which evolved into a real friendship to this day... I still couldn't get it right. Until just now. Five Mins ago... Sipping coffee and trying to pay along with RL on my Fender cp 60s parlor guitar.. It just clicked. If yall only knew how freaking major this is to ya boy... In bout in tears.. I gotta call Trenton :) :) :) HELL YEAH!!!!
welcome aboard the Blues Train, brother.
Is Cedric still living? And more… did he eventually pick up anything close to playing like his grandfather ?
Absolute treasure. Never seen this before.
His smile is still infectious. Blessed be R. L. Burnside.
Jumper On The Line... my favorite.
THIS MAN IS GENIUS
oh my, this groove crawls into the brain. So infectious!
Had the PLEASURE of seeing R.L. at a small club in Ottawa 1995. Simply Amazing
Saw him in Australia - mid 90's he was great - and chatted to those of us who stayed around after the show. Even got an autograph for my son.
"it looks like an easy music to play..on the surface, then you think...how are these cats doing this"....Keith Richards.
That's funny Keith kick your ass
But you're right man I've been practicing that I gave up on I can't do this stuff
The use of every intentional digit not every one is born to play most have a song or two to play
Patients and practice knowing the right key to use genres open up to those who play not to preform and those who perform because they can play
That’s cause it’s 2% technical skill and 98% soul. The blues is all feel. If you ain’t got it you can’t play it. It’s an African cultural art born out of suffering and centuries of oppression that very few white folks have been able to mimic.
@@thecowboypreacher6568 oh man i cant wait to suffer so i can play the blues like this.
He was the real deal true Americana

I'm so blessed to have friends from this amazing family of Holly Springs blues masters.... Trenton Ayers!!!! That's my brotha!! And on drums... Cedric Burnside. Descendant's of Hill Country represent!
Eigentlich das einzige Video das man braucht um sich alles abzugucken :D
this is amazing. I owe RL money just for watching
that makes 2 of us!
I've recently discovered this kind of music and immediately fallen in love with old blues rhytms... I am from much younger generation than probably most of today's blues listeners. But I never could understand the pop music... When I listen to blues, folk, jazz, music from 60's and earlier, I feel that it moves something deep in my soul... I just can't find it in today's music...
Oh man a million billion thanks for uploading this
Mr. Burnside was, and still is, an American national treasure that has been long overlooked.
