I really think that the automatic qualifier should be changed to either be whomever wins the regular season conference championship or to include whomever wins the regular season conference championship. Especially for the weaker conferences. The team that wins the regular season had to be the best team in their conference for months, they play one bad game in the conference tournament and their season is over.

All conferences didn’t always have a conference tournament, the regular season champs got the automatic bid. 💰changed all that and until 1976 only conference champs qualified for the tourney.
