  • Jose Maria Rubio is an automotive journalist who’s always kept a keen eye on the world of motorsport, and especially the disciplines that don’t require smooth tarmac. He began covering the half-expedition, half-endurance race called the Camel Trophy back in 1987 with the Spanish teams, and subsequently traveled through the world’s harshest and most remote terrain for the next decade while calling it his day job. Enthralled with what Africa had to offer in particular, Jose Maria also followed the infamous Dakar Rally, but among the ruggedly high-tech rally cars, workhorse 4x4s, and sand dune slicing motorcycles, a Camel Trophy-spec Land Rover was the vehicle he’d long hoped to call his own. Mechanically fresh but aesthetically original (and better for it), he still puts the Sandglow yellow Disco through its paces.

I think most if not all of the (smart) owners of Camel Trophy vehicles have done the same when presented with the decision of how to restore and keep them for posterity. It's a fine line in between keeping them their historical value and keeping them from rusting out. I however would address any rust or damage to the undercarriage. It's a difficult compromise there as their patina should be kept authentic imo.

I have a disco, friend has a Toyota... in my opinion I would rather be surprised that the thing has been so reliable rather than him who is shocked and heartbroken when his Toyota breaks. If you expect the worst you are happy, when you expect the best you are let down. Toyotas are great cars but both are vehicles and can and will break if you use them extensively offroad. They both have reputations but I've also noticed owners don't know how to take care of cars. The disco is 170k and still running, still hasn't been unable to make it home on its own power. Seems like a good vehicle to me, but i have to thank those who talked down on it and the reputation it has... I was able to get mine for basically free.

Hola! Espectacular!
Ahí me he perdido.

Jose Maria Rubio says this car won the 1987 Trophy, but Fernando Castaneda won the trophy in 1991.

North America never saw this version of the Disco with the diesel. Sure it's only 115, but much more reliable than the V8.

I would have to say that these Discoveries and Defenders were very capable off road vehicles during their time. It is just unfortunate that they were not the most reliable.

During the 60s, 70s, 80s and mid 90s, it was a reliable vehicle. The 2.25, 3.5, 19j, 200tdi and 300tdi. There's a reason why the 300tdi are still in produced until the td5 model retired. It's quite common to see their TDI engine could last over 650k miles with a basic maintenance (the one above is a 200tdi, the U.S market didn't get one). Even in the village in Congo, they're still been used as a public transportation. The poor reliability rating came from the later version. Year 2000 and so on Land Rover including its high end model (the Range Rover* model, not the brand) received a bad reputation for reliability as Range Rover have switched lanes to luxurious market and with much more sophisticated features it brought the basic Land Rover model to poor reliability aswell. People couldn't even tell the difference between the basic Land Rover model (Defender) or a high end model (Range Rover). That's why the reputation stuck in the brand itself, people couldn't seen the bright side anyway. Even Google couldn't suggest the right answer if you ask them regarding the LR reliability rating. Their answer mostly pops up as Late 2020s Range Rover model rating. And people these days in social media are so quick judging the brand if the smallest problem occurs. So it's pretty much a defamation.

No sé....
