Yeah. I have at least 2 examples each of all the Authentic Colts from the 70/80s and this Police Model is the most captivating. In appearence, handling, firing , , all! I was surprised as to how powerful it is too!
@@geffreybolster3780 I am so jealous. I had two Pietta replica Colts, specifically being the 1851 Navy and the 1860 Army. They eventually broke and one of my friends asked to buy them as project guns. I have since ordered a Uberti 1851 Navy, and it should arrive in the mail today. God I'd love to own an actual Colt though, even if it's from their re-run from the 70's/80's.

I love your videos comparing original guns to their modern replicas/reproductions and this 1862 Police is probably one of the best looking revolvers ever made. Have you heard of or considered trying the Eras Gone bullets and molds for these revolvers? I would be very interested to see an original revolver firing a replica of the original bullets and see how the reproduction guns handle the conicals as well. Thank you.

You have made my day. I have been working on a wooden frame to hold and proof test an old SxS, 12 ga. BPC shotgun with 60 grn. BP + .69 cal. ball. I was really tired, so I tuned in to your site to relax. I have been waiting for you to do this video, Now I am going to shoot my 6.5 " barreled Uberti Police this week, weather permitting. I really enjoy you approach in comparing the Frodo vs original. Very nicely done, thank you. I just bought an Uberti 1851 Navy, and ordered an Eras Gone bullet mold. The mold makes the Colt Cartridge Works conical bullet. My hope is to make paper wrapped cartridges using the Colt bullet. Since the 1862 uses the same load, I may need to add an 1862 to my "wish list.". Yes, I just subscribed!

Excellent video! I was at Cabela's near Portland or yesterday they had an original unconverted specimen and a converted original both for sale! A little over 3 k usd each.
I bought an Uberti 1862 Police and love it. It's amazing how close to the originals they are. I have a question: how do you have so many old originals in your country? I am in the US.
Cool comparison, thanks. I've found with Uberti replica's the biggest issue with cap jams are poor factory nipple, I automatically replace with Tresso nipples, and the cap channel on the right side of the frame tens to be somewhat more shallow than the originals. A little work with a dremel or foredom tool and stone wheel takes care of that. The other issue is that the channel in the hammer sometimes has sharp burs on it that will "lock" the cap extrusion in place, a little light stoning cures it most times. Other times I've seen them way too large and filled with JB weld and before it's complete dry set it down on an oiled safety notch to create the indent needed. I have seen some very nice ones from Uberti at times, but for the most part consider them to be mostly finished kits.

This size is my absolute favourite. I had a police, but it was too worn and loose for competition use and i replaced it with a Manhattan Navy. Basically a 1851 Navy, in the Police size with a 5 inch barrel. Very nice target pistol.

Olive oil applied with to the cylinder arbor every recharge keeps the cylinder & fouling balance. More modern for me is a fine coat of moly-lube as mentioned above and my revolver SASS-CAS's all day. Just a suggestion is all. Thanks again for another marvelous revolver video, sir. - Col. MKH 6476-P

Got one of the 5 1/2” models, and I’m sending it back. The cylinder had a lot of play in it, being able to slide it on the arbor back and forth about 1/32” when not cocked, and because of this, the hammer never made full contact with the nipples, even with the caps on when cocked, since the hand pushed the cylinder forward this distance. Sickening to snap the caps, just to get clicks. Wedge was driven in just about all the way and could be pushed out with thumb pressure, and it loosened up from just trying to get the caps to go off. And one of the barrel pins was bent downward, and the whole barrel looked as if it was bent downward as well. Guess I got a lemon, but it’s almost turned me off from buying another Uberti (this was my first). My Pietta ‘51 Navy has had zero issues, having it almost two years. Granted it sounds like I’m comparing two different Colt replica models by different makers, but I’m not saying one company is better than the other. I’d get it replaced with another one, but with having this happen, it’s taken away my interest.

I like this cap and ball revolver... It's a pity that uberti has not reproduced the cap channel. I have1 navy 1861 by pietta and this channel was reproduced. It's a detail but it's very viewable.

Another great vid. Thank you! What a beautiful pair of revolvers. I think my next cap 'n ball is going to be the '62 police. I just wish they would make a 4.5" repro though. Too bad the original doesn't shoot a little better but for an old girl, still not bad. Maybe try some .390" balls. Might be better. I believe .390" was the original bullet size for the ".36" calibers.
Taylor’s and Co. and Cimarron both carry the 4 1/2”, however Cimarron is currently on backorder (I called about it), though they’re about $20 cheaper than Taylor’s.
One problem with the accuracy of the reproductions is that they make the cylinder bore smaller than the barrel bore. Once you ram the projectile into the cylinder it is too small to properly engage the rifling. This was not the case with originals. I normally bore my cylinders out to .380 and it improves the accuracy considerably.

I own an Uberti 1862 Police, so here is what I think about it before I had to make some modifications:
1- My 1862 shot too high and to the right out of the box
2- it's the worst cap sucker of all my Uberti/Pietta colt replicas
3- the hammer security notch was too small, so completly ineffective and dangerous
4- the hammer trigger notch was too small, so the hammer couldn't be completly armed
After modifications:
1- it's a very accurate shooter, I can pretty easily hit 90 points at 25 meters with .375 lead balls and 0.8g of Swiss 1 Powder
2- the lightweight of this revolver makes him very cool to shoot with
3- In my opinion, one of the best looking revolver ever, even if I prefer the Colt 1861 above all

There s a comment about 50m shots. I fire mine at 50yds Penetration through boards is v e r y adequate. The elongated balls outperform the round balls. When powder compression stops before the rammer reaches its stop, and the tip of the ball is just below the chamber surface, this is the most efficient (powerful). No wadding, packing, cornmeal , . Just powder and ball.
Both of them are lovely looking pistols! The only thing that looks strange to me (Not a criticism, just an observation) is the fluted cylinders. I'm so used to seeing the larger Colt Army and Navy .44s which don't have the fluted cylinder, that this one just looks weird, and it's something that I associate with more modern designs. The case hardening colours on the frame really do add massively to the overall appearance on the Uberti.

It's nice to see other 1862 police reps also shoot crappy! My Uberti 1862 is real picky about loads. For some reason this month it likes .380 ball and 16gr of pioneer. LOL

It is quit a difference. By just lossing one chamber, that cylinder seems far more slender.
Uberti are known for their great reproductions. They are popular here in the USA for just that.

You look almost like Clint Eastwood in 'The Outlaw Josey Wales' firing those two pistols, although I'm well aware that his matching pair in the movie was the Walker Colts with a single Pocket model as is backup.

I have always had a fascination with the Colt 1860 and 1862 police model. There is just something so graceful and beautiful about the lines of them. I have one each by Pietta (have never fired them...yet) as well as many others by that company as well as a Uberti 1858 Remington I purchased from a man at a cheap price!

Common error. Colt didn't produce the 1851 "Navy" for the Navy. It was called the "Navy" only because of the naval battle scene engraved onto the cylinder. The Navy didn't purchase any of them. Nor was it designed for the Navy.
I've seen tons of these in Mexico that are in 38 rimfire but of course no ammo for them

Hello Cap & Ball , and all lover's Colt Western too .! just for say , this Colt 1862 is one of my favorit gun , lightweight , a true pocket gun with good stopping power , cal.36 & 5 shots .! So well I' ve got 2 Colt Police 1862 , one Uberti & one Palmetto with a frame made in brass for this one .... I've got 2 Colt 1860 Centaure or " Centennial 1960 rnma " cal. 44 , one is a " Marshall " , with a 5 " barrel & white finish color & the second Colt Centaure , very close up to the true Colt 1860 Army , with a deep black finish color .. And 1 beautifull Colt 1860 Army Uberty , cause is white finish too , all this gun are in good condition . But the mechanical like the springs are " fragile " :( ( I must make my own spring .. ) , & uberti parts are expensive .. Hi from France ( & sorry for mystake , i' am rusty & need some training , lol )
Was the Pocket Navy ever officially adopted?
Not by the Military. It was carried by some cavalry as a private purchase item during and after the CW.
I m going to the range soon with mine to see for myself. I fire the round/elongated balls from the Colt molds. I ll make a pine board baffel box and fire at it from 12, 25, 45 yards. We ll see. Right you are! 'Who cares when your holding history in your hands.'
It would be interesting to shoot old cylinder on the new gun since the reproduction guns cylinder is too small for the bore.

capandball awesome channel one of my favorites. That was a better group with those pistols. I was wanting to get into black powder game hunting. I was wanting to get a pedersoli kodiak double rifle or a Thomson center bone collector. Which would you choose. Can you load modern in lines through the breech? How far can you stretch out the kodiak express? I know I have alot of questions just starting and curious. I love your channel.
The Kodiak double rifles are hard to group well. I would go for a singleshot rifle. The TC Bone Collector is too modern for me. Why don't you buy a fast twist Hawken in .50 cal?
capandball I want optimal performance. I want to take long range shots and eventually take big game. I don't know what the top end of the hawken performance is. I do like the esthetics and price tag of the hawken. I like the sharps rifles as well. I do not know how accurate the modern black powder sharps rifles are though. I guess just lack of information.

Colt Single Action revolvers, whether they're cap & ball or a Single Action Army, are the prettiest revolvers in the world.

I am looking to buy my first black powder revolver and I notice there are two companies Pietta and Uberti. In your opinion what is better if any and what would be the better gun of these companies the 1860 army, 1851 navy, 1861 navy or the Remington 1858 new army. Thank you
Start with an Uberti 1858 Remi. Best choice for the first bp rev.

Not the Pietta 1858?
Most say Uberti, I started with a Pietta 1858 and it is a beautiful, and accurate pistol. I've never had issues with it. Back in the day, the Uberti had a history of higher quality than the Pietta, but recently, it is said the Piettas are equal or slightly better.
Truthfully, the Repros are hit and miss, handle before you buy if possible, but I agree with starting with the 1858 model.
Great video as usual I to prefer Uberti firearms for their great detail and authenticity to the originals of the day but I can’t sing the praise of pietta firearms I had to many bad and regrettable experiences in owning them and yes Uberti are a bit pricey but extremely worth it its my opinion pietta are sadly better used as a paperweight but like I said I’ve had to many bad experiences with them that is just my personal opinion of them I believe everyone is entitled to their own and if you like them then good buy what you prefer as I do

It just keeps getting better. The 'Pocket Police' ? Colt simply called it 'Pocket' (with Patent Creeping Lever').
Later the Colt Company called it 'Police'. T H E N the Colt Company began calling it the 'Pocket Police' ! ! !
Good 'ol Colt. Stage coaches on 'Navy' pistols, Ships on 'Army' pistols, 'Navy' pistols used by the Army and Army pistols used by the Navy.

'1851 Navy'. He made a 'Ranger size Belt Pistol'. Of which he had it engraved with 'The Naval Scene' in homage to Cmmd Moore of the Texian Navy. He did this also on the New Holster Pistol (Not New Army. Colt didn t make a 'Army' pistol. He made Holster Pistols). Colt didn t make them for any specific military service.
Later, the Colt company embraced the 'monikers' of 'Army/Navy calibers and Pistols'.
Colt only made Pocket, Belt and Holster Pistols. The other names came from , , others.
The Colt Company later used the common reference to .36 as a Navy (not 'Naval') caliber by referring to the 'New Model Pocket...' as having 'Navy Size Calibre'.

tannstang I always thought the second gen colt cap and ball revolvers were kind of a rip off for that reason.
The 'Navy' designation is confusing. Colt didn t make the '1861 Navy' for the Navy. The 'Navy' refers to the caliber and not the pistol. It is v e r y common to state the reason for the 'Navy' designation due to the engraved scene on the cylinder. However, this reveals itsself as confusing at best when one sees the 1860 Army with the Naval scene engraved on its cylinder and the Stagecoach scene engraved on the 1862 Pocket Navy (New Model Pocket of Navy Caliber)! Which btw, was released a f t e r the creeping lever models. Which Colt designed himself!
The label 'Navy' was in use in the 1850s though! People just started calling them that. Colt did plenty of confusing things back then. Such as miscommunicating with Ormsby which resulted in Dragoons being engraved on the Walker cylinders instead of Rangers.
I m still digging. It seems more and more like it that the '1862 Pocket Navy was designed/made by those who took over after Colt died in '62! Seems there was an attempt to ride the coat tails of the popular '1851 Navy' in hopes of sales bolstering.
Curiously, the New Model Army was sold, a lot!, to the Navy. The fluted and 'Cavalry' cylinder 7 1/2'' and 8''. With attachable breech too!

If you pack the arbor with grease, you will never have the cylinder jam.
You are right about that, but i was refering to about 8:20 in the video where he had to help the cylinder along from a fouling jam. I have never had a fouling jam since I started greasing the arbor.

Thanks so much for this and your many other fine BP handgun video's. Owning (and shooting) several Uberti, Ruger, revolvers. Many of my questions have been answered during your video's only to generate more questions. I am so grateful to learn from knowledgeable individuals such as yourself. An unfortunate side note: I hope your beautiful country is not plagued by the big money America hating scum bags that skew firearm/hunting/fishing information. CNN,MSNBC, Democrats/Rino's, Clintons, Bloomburgs, Soros, unfortunately the morbid list goes on.Anyway... Many thanks brother for information some will never know.
Finally a shooter uses a rest to provide reasonable account of accuracy. Kids nowadays hold a Thompson contender out in the wind and get 2 foot groups at 25 yards ..with a scope.. and call the launch vehicle inaccurate 😂🤣😂

That was good! I agree! The Police model is the sleekest and sexiest of the old Colts. I really like mine. I have a Colt authentic Blackpowder series # 53424. I love how it fires. I was a m a z e d as to how much more powerful it is compared to the old .31 pocket model, while not being very much larger. I have an old magazine from 1979 where P. Spangenberger tests the two Colt reissue new Model Pockets. he shows the Police to fire with more accuracy and power! Curious.
I have 1862 Uberti and it is the worst cap jammer I have ever owned and I have owned cap and ball revolvers since 1967.
