      Pompey gave himself the title "Magnus" (Latin for 'The Great'). Although it was basically a pr stunt, he was an amazingly accomplished general who had the misfortune of becoming Julius Caesar's enemy. If Caesar hadn't been around Pompey could technically be considered a 'great' (although Scipio Africanus would deserve this more in my opinion), Julius Caesar not only paved the way for the Roman Empire but became a god upon his death. He, or Augustus, are far more deserving of such a title than Pompey whose military prowess far exceeded his political career, unlike the Caesars.

      I've always made fun of this whole AD /CE discussion. English speaking world (and some other languages) use this system referencing a God, while (supposedly) Ultra Religious Poland uses terms Our Era (pol. N.E) and Before Our Era(pol. P.N.E)
      Not that I dislike term Anno Domini , it sounds good and all, but why have this debate at all when you could use neutral system? BC still has the same initials as Before Christ, so why not use Before Our Era or something along these lines?

    • @SpamMeGooglification
      @SpamMeGooglification Před 6 lety

      The issue is that it is not a neutral change nor was it done for neutral reasons.
      In any event, its also asinine as it still pegs the date to the birth of christ [ accurate or not ].
      e.g. its just a name change to not 'offend' a small segment of people, to offense a large segment of people, and yet, still is the same date.

    By coincidence I'm writing something about King Chulalongkorn Maharaj, where Maharaj is the Sanskrit derived Thai epithet for "The Great King". I was looking at the other Maharaj in Thai/Siamese history and noticed there were quite a few. That got me thinking about how many monarchs in The West are called "The Great" and came up with Alexander and Catherine. Then I realised that while I knew a bit about Alexander, I didn't actually know anything about Catherine, or why she was great. Then your video pops up today, just after I stumbled on some great videos by another channel that were about Alexander (in particular about what became of his body after he died). So, I guess that means I'm on the right track writing about Chulalongkorn.

    "Great": The title you give when someone does so much cool stuff that you can't bother to be more specific about their achievements. (I can sympathise a bit with Catherine being called "the Great," since she did a _lot_ of different great stuff in her reign, but Alexander didn't do much beyond conquering everything in sight.)
    Contrast Suleiman the Magnificent, whose Arabic title translates to something like "the Lawmaker" since he codified centuries of law into a single, useful text. He did other stuff, but that's apparently what his countrymen thought was most important.
