    because of Grab's monopoly it became more expensive than it should be. Uber was perfect. It was an amazing idea to let anybody become an Uber driver even part time.. there were company managers, students, all kinds of people driving for Uber..It was a necessary change. Else most licensed traditional cab drivers sometime declined to go to some destinations and preferred to wait at the same place for a more lucrative ride. they ruled and they were also very expensive..

    This really doesn't explain the TRUTH on why Uber is no longer competitive with GRAB. So let me give you the gist... Uber is worldwide, and that means worldwide lawsuits. Which Uber can win, based on the lawsuits' claims against it, but I the end, it will cost a fortune and bankrupt the company. So Uber settles... either leaving completely that market or leaving it with a "royalty contract." Like GRAB did... basically GRAB took advantage of the many lawsuits worldwide that Uber was fighting, "attack when the opponent is weakened", then PAYED Uber to get out the market. But would give UBER a kickback in every ride Grab transpired. Not only do clients prefer Uber over Grab, SUPERIOR SERVICE, but drivers do too... SUPERIOR BENEFITS.

    Its not about disruptive ride hailing model vs traditional taxi model. Its not about Uber vs Grab. It boils down to only one thing that matters and that is: COMPETITION.
    Although we have many taxi companies in traditional model plying the road, ALL OF THEM are cooperating with each other and NO ONE is interested to compete with each other. We ended up with an inefficient taxi transport model that frustrated passenger in terms of supply meeting demand. Private ride hailing companies change all that parameters and disrupt the status quo.
    Today, the taxi companies are still complacent and think they can survive on their old inefficient way of operation because they still retain privileges (like exemption from requiring children/baby seat when taking child passenger etc) and monopoly in terms of infra usage (e.g. exclusive and monopolistic usage of Taxi stand which is paid by tax payers money but reserved for usage only to that few taxi companies which make no sense from public accountability of tax payers monies' usage which the gov has to seriously look into and probably require these taxi companies to pay taxi stand exclusive usage fee if they want to retain the monopolistic and exclusive usage of public funded infra like taxi stand). These taxi companies is leeching on the gov's given privileges and goodwill and when these are removed from them, they will be forced to be more competitive or shutdown for good.
    Competition is good for most part of it and is necessary if we were to progress. Competition is needed to clear the dead wood from the industry (like how Uber is cleared out of SEA market by Grab competition because they (Uber) only want to come in for fast money and not interested to grow a sustainable long term business here. They run at the first sight of tough competition.)

    Engaging story of an Asian David versus an American Goliath. Lesson is obvious: There is no substitute to understanding the local cultural milieu in gaining a leg up on your competition. One resource speaker was rather amusing: Did he say "ride healing" (in 12:02)? Thought I heard him say that you can also pay for "rice" using GrabPay (25:00). No wonder Uber cannot compete in SE Asia.

    Okey I now know what I previously thought that Grab won because they were offering riders plenty of vouchers and drivers plenty of incentives. It was what $800 per 100 trips in a week incentive to drivers? It kinda of doubled the fare for the drivers while keeping the fares lower than Uber's. Now I know it was because of the scandals instead. Thank you Channel NewsAsia.

    Uber was way better than grab in SEA.
    They’re operating as monopoly nowadays and service got really bad. Also, often it’s not cheaper than taxis anymore. In most countries in SEA taxis are available everywhere and don’t require you to wait for 15 minutes until the grab driver drops off the previous passenger.
    Thanks to that many smaller companies are taking away market share from them again.

    This documentary is more about Uber (in Southeast Asia) than it is about Grab.
    And yeah, Grab doesn't own ride-hailing in SE Asia. Not yet by far, not in Indonesia at least. The fight for SE Asia is far from settled, even though Uber has most definitely bowed out.

    • @FerdinandZebua

      One simple question one can check for oneself: who started motorcycle ride-hailing in Indonesia: Grab, or Go-Jek?
      Also, which app had cash payment option first? Online wallet? E-cash licensing?
      In fact just last week Grab gave up GrabCash (in Indonesia) and went with Ovo for their e-payment services.

    Anyone who does their research will know that Uber owns 30% of Grab. So, when you say, "This is the story of how a southheast Asian start-up company took down the biggest fish in the pond", is just CNA being complicit in adverstising for Grab/Uber with this contrived "news story"; just a marketing ploy that brings attention to both Grab, and it's owner, Uber.

  • @siewbun
    @siewbun Před 5 lety

    I'm surprised CNA made no mention about Softbank. As a personal opinion and a user of both Uber and Grab, Uber's product and service was ahead and better. The only reason why Grab won is simply because it makes more financial sense for their investors to kill Uber and make Grab a winner to cash out.

    • @kwoowoo828
      @kwoowoo828 Před 5 lety

      In the war between Uber and Grab, Grab did not win. Instead it is Uber who choose to lose. If Uber were to persist, Grab will lose. Problem is Uber do not see their future in SEA market. They are only here for fast money. They have no intention to stay here for the long term. And that is their failure. It is not Grab victory although it appears that way. Grab will fail if they are complacent thinking they have beaten a global giant which they have not actually.
