The Dolphins were pure magic. It was cute to see the little girl inside of Kate that came out when the dolphins came out to play. I enjoyed the Voiceover of how you’re managing the auto steer roll settings and especially the discussion about when and why to set an outside lead for the jib. That was really helpful.
Hi Mark! Dolpins are the highlight of sailing offshore! I always get excited when I see them. Curtis is enjoying sharing the technical side of things. A lot of really top level sailors have passed a huge amount of knowledge on to us, and we want to pass on that good karma. Glad to hear you enjoyed!
The second half of this video is knowledge drop after knowledge drop. Love these. They for sure add value for anyone that wants to sail! And, I knew your autopilot could do more than blindly steer to a compass heading, but I didn't fully realize it adjusted for side to side roll of the boat. I really enjoy that level of insight into how a high-end autopilot functions!

You do a good job making sure that your dog is pretty safe going to the bathroom. We took a trip with our boat cat (The Bed Pirate Roberts) from NC to Iowa for spring break with the kids. As I type this he is currently sitting in his litterbox. He decided that he should ##2## in his pet backpack+my wife+my daughter. Three separate incidents in one hour. WHY MR KITTY WHY!!!!The boat looks like it is still in Ihabela! Are you away from the boat? Hanging out for a while?? I can't do much with my boat in terms of sail changes. I basically have a 150 Genoa on a roller furler, a decent but pretty old mainsail, and a spinnaker that is so light it can roll up into a ball about the size of a softball. It sure will actually move the boat in less than a knot of wind believe it or not. IT came off some smaller boat, and I'm not sure what it is made of exactly...but it works in really light air.
OMG! We love hearing the stories of The Bed Pirate Roberts! He should have his own youtube channel of his adventures, we would watch it! Roxy probably would too! Have to go to the website, facebook, instagram, or patreon (sales pitch: this is where we stash the super detailed real time updates and pics) for real time updates, we can't give away spoilers here ;-) As long as the sails are moving you forward and you are having fun, that is all that matters. We did notice a difference and improvement in the way the boat sails with the new sail :-) Love hearing from you every week!

We intend on launching "The Adventures of the Bed Pirate Roberts" sometime this Winter or Early Spring. We are going to film a few episodes when we launch the boat in December. Then we are heading for the Bahamas and the Eastern US for a couple of months. We think we can get enough footage to run the channel for a year in a month or two. My oldest son and I are trying to write up some scripts. We are planning the major theme to be a cat that has to capture as many beds as possible to take his six naps a day. He is supposed to be psychic and can take control of people's minds and talk to them. During those times when he takes control he can give them suggestions and they'll act that way for a little while. His backstory will be that he came from the 1700s in a time warp, and is chased by pirates from that time period that think he would make a great barbecue. Naturally he will trick them, fight them, etc. Basically a cross between "The talking Kitty Cat" channel, The Princess Bride, and generic pirate themes.
Another good vidio it's nice to see you being so upbeat and positive to many channels seam to spend more time complaining than enjoying. Glad to see you guys and Roxy in your Grove be safe and thank you very much

I admire your goals, knowing you have bitten off a big chunk. Your mainsail rig should be a lesson for all cruisers, keeping it safe, but still moving along. I can hardly wait to see your doldrums footage. Sweet Ruca should handle the conditions very easily.

Love it! The reason myself and I am sure others tune in watching is the offshore passage making. Not that the other extraneous content is bad, but watching sailing offshore is the best! You will be relieved that I have no armchair suggestion this episode 😀, as a matter of fact well noted is your proper coiling of lines. Far to many try to make perfect pretty loops which only induce twist and then wonder why the sheet or halyard play out with kinks and knots.

@@SailingSweetRuca Thank you for your kind words, with that said lets look into an area of interest and some deficiencies noted during this passage. I can go into great depth here on the subject and if you are interested I can provide more in depth material on Preventive Overboard POB: which I prefer rather than Man Overboard MOB. Over the years I have attended a number of Safety at Sea Seminars, and even had the opportunity to host a few. And I’m a great believer in their benefit for cruising couples, even though they are often associated with ocean races and focused on the safety requirements of that way of going to sea. In my opinion, for the two-person crew offshore, no matter how well equipped and drilled, the chances of recovery of a person overboard are not great, even in the best of conditions. And once the wind gets up they become slim indeed. This is why I always tell my crew in every POB briefing to “imagine that there is a 500-foot cliff on the other side of those lifelines”. But what really matters to the short-handed crew offshore is making as sure as humanly possible that the MOB situation never happens in the first place-we need prevention, not cure. My personnel focus has been staying on board rather than recovery.
I had to laugh when you were 'verifying' your actual location using millibars & wind gradients. The controls we put in place to validate location on the vast ocean make me laugh. (Yes, Curtis I do similar exercises in futility!) Remember, these become 'less accurate' the further out to sea you go! Less satellite data, fewer bouys- thank god for your weather tracker (interesting occupation, right?) I'll admit, I was a bit surprised that you folks chose NOT to fly the spinnaker for a surfing exposition but darn! it's deep out there! And, far from shore if something decides to fail, or chafe through, or rip, tear, separate- Oh, you know! Still loving the J/46 and the ability to carry speed (in safety) while giving you a moderately relaxing ride. I'm thinking of a Hunter 41 DS or AC for a similar (but, reversed!) circumnavigation, but- I'll wait 'til the end of yours before I start my insanity! Something about installing lee cloths makes me think 'crossing'.

It looks like you are not going to actually touch the mainland of that VAST continent on this passage. Too bad! I will probably backtrack on some of your vids but I am MOST interested in your passage around Cape Horne. I haven't seen any other channel do that yet. I have followed a few channels (Uma most notably) who sailed north! Looked forward to your adventures... SUBBED!

Thank you @SlingPilot :-) We do believe that pirates are a possible threat in many places. Possible is the key word, just like lightning strikes or containers. We should probably talk about this in an upcoming episode while we are in this area.
These sailing videos always amaze me. The water looks pretty good and a bit rough at times. What I would like to know is how you avoid or sail in seas that resemble Mt Everest ?.
Hello Chuck, glad to have you aboard :-) For the most part waves always seem smaller on camera than they look in person, but mostly we use weather routing data to try to avoid giant Mt. Everest stuff if we can.
You both practice real sailing and are quite knowledgeable about sail trim and balance.. I enjoyed the short technical reviews and encourage you to do more as this will enlighten a lot of viewers.. There is quite some background one needs to understand and master on a sailboat doing passages..

We use Expedition Marine on a PC as our primary navigation software. www.expeditionmarine.com/ It is expensive software, and the same stuff used by boats in the Volvo Ocean Race and top racing programs, but if you price out a large screen plotter, the software and a pc become a much better deal at the nav station. We also use PredictWind Offshore to easily download gribs from the IridiumGo. (Stay tuned as we are going to do a big nav station refit soon!)

Good eye, but not good enough ;-) The camera is facing aft, so the number you can see is opposite of our actual course. Add 180 to it and that is where the bow is pointing. Cool that you are looking that close, and know the rumblines of that area! That was a short clip!

Hi @Sailing Capricorn. Glad you enjoyed. We download grib files via Predictwind offshore and via SailMail over the IrridiumGo. Then we just drag them into the grib folder in Expedition. We use Predictwind direct also.
@@SailingSweetRuca thx - does PredictWind provide also the weather systems and isobars? (Not only grid) It was interesting to see how you compare your position with the weather system laying underneath. Nice aspect to decide the model to calculate with. Can you adjust in Expedition the timeline of the weather models? (Sometimes the models are fine and only the timing isn’t perfect)
I can't remember the exact name for the C-Maps without looking them up. It is the 4D version with the wide and continental chart coverage, they are the ones you download through the link inside Expedition. Outside of Expedition we also have world charts in Navionics and OpenCPN and a smattering of paper charts.
Predictwind doesnt do as good of a job with isobars IMO, but seems better for detailed routing in areas close to land. We also use weatherfax style downloads from NOAA as well. We adjust the timing, velocity, and location of the forecast gribs a lot when routing. It is very common that systems move faster or slower or another system effects the position of the one you are in. We validate gribs vs real time boat data, and when possible ships and bouys. Hope that helps.

Like starting about 5.15 and the music coming in the 6 50s is a complete no no. If you watch the comments on other channels you will see most viewers just want the videos without music. There is a lot if science going on, too much for a quick explanation really, and there is more than just a venturi happening. My drawings weren't exactly CFD modeled ;-) I was just trying to help people visualize the "slot" and the basic goal of smoothing the airflow through it to show the purpose of changing jib sheet lead positions.

Love it! The reason myself and I am sure others tune in watching is the offshore passage making. Not that the other extraneous content is bad, but watching sailing offshore is the best! You will be relieved that I have no armchair suggestion this episode 😀, as a matter of fact well noted is your proper coiling of lines. Far to many try to make perfect pretty loops which only induce twist and then wonder why the sheet or halyard play out with kinks and knots.

@@SailingSweetRuca Thank you for your kind words, with that said lets look into an area of interest and some deficiencies noted during this passage. I can go into great depth here on the subject and if you are interested I can provide more in depth material on Preventive Overboard POB: which I prefer rather than Man Overboard MOB. Over the years I have attended a number of Safety at Sea Seminars, and even had the opportunity to host a few. And I’m a great believer in their benefit for cruising couples, even though they are often associated with ocean races and focused on the safety requirements of that way of going to sea. In my opinion, for the two-person crew offshore, no matter how well equipped and drilled, the chances of recovery of a person overboard are not great, even in the best of conditions. And once the wind gets up they become slim indeed. This is why I always tell my crew in every POB briefing to “imagine that there is a 500-foot cliff on the other side of those lifelines”. But what really matters to the short-handed crew offshore is making as sure as humanly possible that the MOB situation never happens in the first place-we need prevention, not cure. My personnel focus has been staying on board rather than recovery.

I had to laugh when you were 'verifying' your actual location using millibars & wind gradients. The controls we put in place to validate location on the vast ocean make me laugh. (Yes, Curtis I do similar exercises in futility!) Remember, these become 'less accurate' the further out to sea you go! Less satellite data, fewer bouys- thank god for your weather tracker (interesting occupation, right?) I'll admit, I was a bit surprised that you folks chose NOT to fly the spinnaker for a surfing exposition but darn! it's deep out there! And, far from shore if something decides to fail, or chafe through, or rip, tear, separate- Oh, you know! Still loving the J/46 and the ability to carry speed (in safety) while giving you a moderately relaxing ride. I'm thinking of a Hunter 41 DS or AC for a similar (but, reversed!) circumnavigation, but- I'll wait 'til the end of yours before I start my insanity! Something about installing lee cloths makes me think 'crossing'.

It looks like you are not going to actually touch the mainland of that VAST continent on this passage. Too bad!
I will probably backtrack on some of your vids but I am MOST interested in your passage around Cape Horne. I haven't seen any other channel do that yet. I have followed a few channels (Uma most notably) who sailed north!

Hi Rick, glad to have you aboard :-) Welcome! Unfortunately we will be sailing by only as stopping in Africa is not in the cards on this leg. Saraha dust on deck is the closest we will come to walking the sands there for now, but we hope to swing into the continent on the way back around.
There are very few things for me more thrilling than sailing with dolphins off shore in a breeze.

Hi Gary, we rarely use our SSB or monitor HF. We have in the past but there really isn't too much going on out there on it these days.

Thank you @SlingPilot :-) We do believe that pirates are a possible threat in many places. Possible is the key word, just like lightning strikes or containers. We should probably talk about this in an upcoming episode while we are in this area.

Hello Chuck, glad to have you aboard :-) For the most part waves always seem smaller on camera than they look in person, but mostly we use weather routing data to try to avoid giant Mt. Everest stuff if we can.

what program are you using for chart pilot.?
Hi there! We use Expedition Marine on a PC as our primary navigation software. www.expeditionmarine.com/ It is expensive software, and the same stuff used by boats in the Volvo Ocean Race and top racing programs, but if you price out a large screen plotter, the software and a pc become a much better deal at the nav station. We also use PredictWind Offshore to easily download gribs from the IridiumGo. (Stay tuned as we are going to do a big nav station refit soon!)

Your compass shot was 30 to 40deg mag , thats back to gib ,
Good eye, but not good enough ;-) The camera is facing aft, so the number you can see is opposite of our actual course. Add 180 to it and that is where the bow is pointing. Cool that you are looking that close, and know the rumblines of that area! That was a short clip!

Thanks. Yes it is. We have a live tracker on our website www.sweetruca.com. We try not to put spoilers on the 'Tube though, as some enjoy the story "in the moment." We post some live stuff on FB and website every now and then. Patrons get super detailed weekly updates of what boat projects we are working on and what we are planning :-)

How do you bring the weather models to Expedition offshore? Via PredictWind?
Hi @Sailing Capricorn. Glad you enjoyed. We download grib files via Predictwind offshore and via SailMail over the IrridiumGo. Then we just drag them into the grib folder in Expedition. We use Predictwind direct also.

It was interesting to see how you compare your position with the weather system laying underneath. Nice aspect to decide the model to calculate with.
Can you adjust in Expedition the timeline of the weather models? (Sometimes the models are fine and only the timing isn’t perfect)
… one additional question. Do you use C-Map MAX MegaWide Charts?
I can't remember the exact name for the C-Maps without looking them up. It is the 4D version with the wide and continental chart coverage, they are the ones you download through the link inside Expedition. Outside of Expedition we also have world charts in Navionics and OpenCPN and a smattering of paper charts.
Predictwind doesnt do as good of a job with isobars IMO, but seems better for detailed routing in areas close to land. We also use weatherfax style downloads from NOAA as well.
We adjust the timing, velocity, and location of the forecast gribs a lot when routing. It is very common that systems move faster or slower or another system effects the position of the one you are in. We validate gribs vs real time boat data, and when possible ships and bouys.

Like starting about 5.15 and the music coming in the 6 50s is a complete no no. If you watch the comments on other channels you will see most viewers just want the videos without music. Man I don't understand what yo mean by a venturi effect. I understand what a venturi is though.
There is a lot if science going on, too much for a quick explanation really, and there is more than just a venturi happening. My drawings weren't exactly CFD modeled ;-) I was just trying to help people visualize the "slot" and the basic goal of smoothing the airflow through it to show the purpose of changing jib sheet lead positions.
