  • Can you sail around Cape Horn in a performance cruising catamaran? Are catamarans faster? Is it safe? Will it flip? Will we experience the dreaded bridgedeck slap? How is the motion?
    We go to the dark side with our friends aboard SV Artemis for this trip to find out and document the experience of sailing a cruising catamaran in the most remote and treacherous waters on the planet, Cape Horn!

    This was such a special video for me !!! I’m Hannah’s mom and this made me cry tears of joy and I felt my heart swell with pride and joy to see my precious daughter sail around “the horn” in the Artemis !! Thank you for doing such a masterful job of documenting this epic journey ❤ I’ve been hearing the stories about their sailing adventures but this was the very first time I was able to actually see what it’s like 🎉 Fantastic!!

      Hey Hannah’s mum, I’m Thomas’ sister!! 😊 Although i follow their journey regularly, I felt the same emotions whilst watching this as it’s the first time I’ve seen them and Artemis in this way aside from being on the boat with them ⛵️Emotions ran high for me too but always happy tears and the same feelings of being so proud of them both for everything they have achieved so far and everything they are still yet to accomplish 🥰💖

    Did not realize how close to the water a cat. can get.
    Such a beautiful couple you all met. It looked like your friend is disabled. How difficult is it for just the two of them to actually sail. I am disabled after five spinal surgeries mostly from old age. Don’t think I’m as brave.

    Cool! Certainly your turn of Cape Horn had more spice to it - wind and speed - but for sure this was another kind of trip. Your friends' cat has very interesting solutions for his condition and that is an example to all that think that, because of that, one better stay home and see life from a TV set. A very special cheers to the couple!!
    See you next week! Will love to hear you comparision of the two experiences! My best, also, to your friends! Fair winds!

    A sure sign you’re on a British boat - hot water bottle in a cosy 😊 And, of course, an electric kettle for the frequent “brews”. Artemis looks very well sorted, and thoroughly workmanlike, those Cornish builders being no strangers to proper seagoing designs.

    Slick setup. Both for the dinghy and the cat. It seems not as "exciting" as the first trip was but part of that was probably the weather too. Excitement is not always the best outcome either. The bridge deck on that cat seems lower than I have seen before, is there much wave slap on it? I would guess that was done for a level deck from "swim platform" to saloon. The video was tastefully done.

    Congratulations to all for rounding the Cape - twice now for the Sweet Ruca Crew. I enjoy vicariously adventuring along with such an accomplished group of sailors. The following is in no way meant to take away from the journey; just a curious observation… something lost in translation. Cape Horn or Kap Hoorn got its name from a Dutch/German explorer; naming it after his home town in the Netherlands “Hoorn” which is Horn in English same meaning. However, Horn in Spanish is Cuerno - Cabo de Cuerno would be correct. Hornos is Spanish for ovens. Curiously I see the Chileans even sign post as Hornos - of course Chile has a right to call it whatever they want; but, the words’ meanings are completely different than the original European name of Hoorn. Things that make you go Hmmm. Adventure on and happy sailing!

    I have a new catamaran and/or trimaran hull design which has been in progress for the last 15 years. It is new/novel and therefore patentable.
    The hull is asymmetric. Though, for description purposes, it could be described as a variant of a conventional symmetric and a conventional asymmetric hull shape. Since, its shape is symmetrical above the waterline and asymmetrical below the waterline, the result of extending existing lines of a conventional symmetric hull at and below the waterline.
    This catamaran and/or trimaran hullshape is suitable for a range of craft from SAILING to small and medium POWER craft.
    SAILING: The hull's benefits for a sailing catamaran or trimaran are;
    *speed
    *pointing ability - VMG
    *no necessity for of dagger or centreboard
    *simple, flat panel design lines, ease of manufacture.
    POWER CRAFT: Benefits of an symmetrical hull shape without the negative characteristics such as;
    *speed of asymmetric shape
    *more balanced reaction to waves - less broaching
    *banks in turns
    To anyone with interest. Cheers

    Cape Horn's 56 in Europe is Edinburgh & Copenhagen latitude.
    Not shockingly far South seen from the Northern Hemisphere but for a sailor it is a major milestone.
    Another thing is, Antarctica is really big and crosses outside the Antarctic circle somewhere (it's about 78% larger than Australia - bigger than USA + Canada).

      @@SailingSweetRuca First, I know nothing about production, BUT, just the sounds of sailing and the both of you seem like a great soundtrack. You yourselves and what you are doing is fabulous content as it is. The soundtrack music is dilutive. Maybe a segue tune here and there, but accompaniments are distractions, and anything lyrical is a no-no. I just watched your well articulated catamaran discussion and am confident you could replace much to all soundtrack with commentary and insight. It seems you may under appreciate all you have to offer.
