I didn't like it at first either. There are many songs like this that one listens to for the first time and only likes them the second time. For example, I didn't like the high parts of 'Froo-oo-oot'. But I listened to it more and it became one of my favorite Marina songs.

I think part of the magic of this song is that it's just so intelligently written. three different hooks that are all memorable and great lyrics that make you think, all without compromising pure pop catchiness. imo one of the greatest pop singles of all time!

I remember I could not stop listening to it when it came out. I do not think the lyrics are as sexual and literal as people think --- this is a beautiful metaphor for being ready to love and about how good it feels to finally be loved back (unlike 6 years ago when this song came out, today I do know how this feels). to this day, I am still annoyed that people do not give enough attention to this album. everyone praises lana del rey for starting a new genre, but let's be real marina is one of the first artists to create the alternative pop genre. this album is legit superior to so many alt-pop or pop albums out there. all the songs are intricately produced(so much attention to detail), the lyrics on this album are introspective without being cringey or pseudo-intellectucal. Her vocals are top-tier, she can hit high notes well, but her low notes are quite distinct and executed properly. I am hoping for the next album, she comes out with a similar style to Froot. I know she hates being called underrated, but she is underrated. People give attention to billie eilish and lana del rey, or taylor swift, but seriously she's the real deal in the music industry.

Oh man, I'm so disappointed with how her upcoming album seems to sounds. What you said about lyrics being cringey and pseudo-intellectual...well, I was just thinking about how FROOT executed each of its songs perfectly while maintaining powerful lyrics (Savages, Immortal, etc). Man's World seemed fine, but the other two singles from Ancient Dreams feel like...she's singing headlines if that makes sense? I get it, she wants to include social issues, but it doesn't feel well-incorporated or thought out fully. The lyrics themselves aren't even like, shocking or poignant or anything. The first time I head Purge the Poison I honestly kinda cringed, even as much as I love Marina. This comment is a lot longer than I meant it to be but I just realized I've been holding onto these thoughts for a couple months now lol

Actually, I don't think this song is completely about sex. It seems that she's singing this song to Fame/recognition. Like she's trying to seduce it. It made me think of how most artists get their start when they are very young (the fruit is fresh and everyone wants a taste of it). Once the artist gets past the age of 30 (usually), people lose interest bc, according to society, the fruit is rotten. Marina, however, sings that she is at the right moment in her life. Yes, she is older and her career hasn't quite picked up yet, but she still has a lot to offer(her branches are heavy). She has gotten over some really crappy stuff, like depression. She is happy with who she is at this point in her life, hence the line, "living la dolce vita."
But she really needs to do this now. The pacman/video game music tells us that this is a game she's playing and she plans on winning.

This sounded like trash at first, and now it's AMAZING. The instrumental in the chorus makes EVERYTHING! :)
I remember riding the bus back from work at 1am on the night that the song was released. I waited all day for that moment. I became so excited when I first heard it, the hooks, the melodies, the guitar in the chorus, the "I'm your carnal flower (...) make my heart explode" melody and production, the whole thing gave me a whole summer vibe, it reminded of my innocent summer loves from years ago, I felt like I could almost fall back in love with my exes. It's impossible to describe the feeling but this is the type of excitement I feel when I instantly fall in love with new music.

the album froot is so confusing, when i first listened to it I absolutely hated it, but then i found the song froot stuck in my head so i went back to it and LOVED it, then i discovered the rest of the album and I CANNOT STOP LISTENING ITS SOOOOO GOOD
Yeah! That's how a lot I felt too. :D I was obsessed with her electropop and Electra heart era that the froot vibes werent doing it for me, but then the front song got stuck in my head till I went back rewatched it and just fell instantly in love.
