  • Thank you everyone for watching me talk about size Inclusivity in the knitting community! There is so much to discuss, but I hope this video provided enough information to give an all-rounded view. I am not the end-all-be-all opinion on size-inclusivity so please feel free to do your own research!

This was great! I love that you gave a cost overview! I remember when I first started knitting and wanted to make a sweater, it was shocking to me that back then (early 2000s) the largest size of most patterns wouldn’t have fit me and I was wearing a standard US clothing size M/L at that time; at this point I am not too much bigger than a size L or the comfortably looser XL. Back then I’d simply make the biggest size on bigger yarns/needles to compensate - sometimes it worked. And, because of yarn costs, I’ve always done yarn substitutions - I’ve never used the called for yarns. Thanks again for making this video!

Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the cost analysis and didn’t find it too confusing! Haha I always use yarn substitutes too!

This video is AMAZING! I don't have a plus size, so I've never understood the full-picture or the level of exclusion that someone with a plus size faces. I love that you did a cost breakdown and that you talked about the amount of time it takes to knit a plus size sweater, I really feel like I learned a lot from your video so thank you! I just started a podcast myself, and I was thinking that in the future I'll use '[SI]' next to the pattern title so that it's obvious to anyone watching that the pattern is size inclusive. Thank you so so much for sharing your experience and great luck with your channel! 💓

Thank you so much!! I’m glad I could help bring awareness and understanding! That’s a really good idea to have a little marker to indicate! Good luck with your channel too!

So happy to find another Aussie podcaster & have been binging your episodes to catch up. This was very interesting and gave me some things to think about. I mentioned some thoughts on this on my channel a couple of weeks ago - more about how many options should designers be expected to put in a pattern in regards to fat being distributed in different places as the size increases. I know there are some spreadsheet type patterns where you input your own sizes and it produces a pattern (but I'm not sure whether they are basic stocking stitch styles or more interesting patterns and textures). In only promoting patterns that are "size inclusive" is there a lower end to consider as well? I think designers should show more finished measurements before expecting people to buy the pattern. It's not enough to just know the bust measurement - I want to know how it will fit around my arms, neck etc. I also find Ravelry & Instagram great resources for looking at how a garment fits on different bodies. There have been some awful "size inclusive" patterns where the designer has no idea and neck openings and armholes have been much too big in the larger sizes. Looking forward to your next episode.

Thank you! It’s great to find some as well! I think you’ve made a great point about the lower sizes too! I chose not to cover it in this video because from my understanding, there is not as much of a scarcity in patterns that cater to petite sizes. It would be great to hear from the perspective of a petite person though!
Yes, necklines can be the worst! So baggy and gapey haha! The Creabea and Jessie Maed Designs tend to include the arm measurements which gives me a lot more confidence when choosing what size to knit.

I watched this episode this morning and I thought this is my village, you are one of my humans. I'm a plus size knitter and find the current trend of holding multiple strands of yarn to be the most frustrating trend. The cost of purchasing enough yarn to make a garment in my size makes it not financially viable for me to make these garments (many of which I love the look of and would love to have in my wardrobe). When you need up to 1600m in 2 or 3 different yarns the $$$ stack up quickly.

So true! You sound like my kinda human too! And not only is the yarn expensive in a large quantity but the shipping ends of being heaps too because it’s based on weight! Also, I don’t know about you but I always over buy because I’m worried I’ll run out!

    Hey Ash,
Like another commenter wrote below, I just finished binging on your episodes and am really enjoying your poddie. You raised many things I totally understand and empathised with in your other episodes, but I thought I would save my hello for this one. I am a firm subscriber by the way and cant wait for your future vlogs.
I appreciated your perspective on this size inclusivity debate, it was nice to hear it from a balanced, fair, and well researched prospective, well done. Coming from a plus sized background, I have experienced the good and the bad, of the limitations of the sizes, now and several years ago, I tend to look at it from a few different angles, it would take a bit to explain it all here though. They way you approached it was very persuasive and interesting, it impressed me.
You mentioned in a previous episode that there didnt seem to many Aussie podcasters and I believe you're right. Off the top of my head I can only think of about eight or nine, most of which I watched and ditched, they just weren't are my cup of tea. If you want some recommendations, I do watch Kel knits (an Aussie knitter in Sydney), A knitters suitcase (an Italian knitter in W.A.) and I am Kylie Gee (an Aussie knitter, who hasnt vlogged in a while, in Cairns).
Im a fellow Frankstonite by the way, and just as nuts as knitting about you are, we need all the nutty knitters we can get in this dull town.
Thanks for sharing the Aussie knitting life,
    Tara

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this comment! It makes me so happy that you’re enjoying my videos and that this video resonated with you! There is so much to cover but I try to be succinct although sometimes my brain and mouth don’t marry up haha
I appreciate the recommendations! I will definitely be checking those out and if you’re ever up for a nice knit and chat I’m usually at Loom & Spindle on a Saturday ☺️
