Ethan Micallef I've kind of experienced the same thing but with shrines instead. If I see a road sign or anything else glowing kind of orange I immediately think it's a shrine for a split second.

Zelda observed my life until when I went to work and I opened the drawer and I heard the chest opening noise. I decided I needed to do something else for a while lol.
4:07 I agree with a lot of things you say, but this point isn't really valid. Maybe on a 1-Month Scale, but NO WHERE on a full console life span scale. All these things you pointed out, they're just what you said. Novelties. "Gimmicks," as others see them as. And in reality, that's what they really are. I don't know anyone who got the 3DS because it's 3D. In fact, I've barely ever used the 3D. Sure, it was cool-ish at first, but it wasn't something that stuck on... Sure, I loved my Wii U to bits, and I liked how I could play on the gamepad, and used it a lot to play zelda recently. But still, other then gyro controls and a secondary menu screen, it hasn't been used much, at all. Except for that single party game compilation. Now, the Wii IS kind of an exception. It's motion control = novelty was pretty cool, at first. But even that slowly deteriorated into Waggle Controls and a pointing mechanism.
... But the switch. The switch's 'gimmick' isn't a novelty. It's a function. A function that makes it twice as good as all the past nintendo consoles. It isn't something that's "A cool idea in theory that can be cleverly expanded on" or "Something cool I used for the first 15 minutes then immediately got bored of." No, the switch is a double console, a wii U and 3ds fusion, a pocket ps4. A game pad ain't shit compared to that. It's a nintendo innovation that's finally permanently awesome.
... Also, I know this is kinda hypocritical to everything I just said, but HD Rumble is an awesome gimmick. So your argument is invalid.

I don't think the 3DS's 3D output is a fair comparison. The 3D output could hurt children's eyes. It gave people headaches if they had 3D on for too long. You also had to hold the 3DS at a full center on angle. The 3D only looked amazing for certain games or specific portions of said games. And it took twice the performance for games to have the 3D output.
So what I'm trying to say is the novelty had huge trade offs and inconveniences that did not make up for the visual aesthetic increase in the end. Which is why most people, myself included, never used the feature beyond a few games.

I just hope all my favorite 2nd and 3rd party devs that have been developing for the 3ds moves on to the switch. It had so many titles you couldn't find anywhere else, so hopefully the Switch can properly take over.
The reality that the Switch finally sits in its dock atop my computer has definitely started to sink in and I'm turning my attention more towards the thing Nintendo needs to deliver on: the games. Now that I've beaten Zelda I'm beginning to look forward to the indies a lot more. Most of the big games we know of with the exception of Super Mario Odyssey, which - as you mentioned - is still quite some time away, don't really interest me that much. The Switch seems like a perfect indie machine, though, so as long as Nintendo doesn't go overboard with curation or other barriers to getting those games on the platform, I have high hopes. One thing that has me slightly worried in this regard, though, is that there has to be price parity between the physical and digital versions of games causing devs to have to raise the price if they want to offer both, sometimes by amounts people may not be willing to pay *just* to have the game be portable. It's one more Nintendo policy that I frankly think we'd be better off without.
Since the first and only Nintendo home console I've owned besides the Switch was the Wii, I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of Virtual Console. I have quite a few classics to catch up on so this is pretty high up on my personal list of priorities.
I've been using the Joy-Con mostly in their separated configuration and I have to say it's one of the most relaxed controller experiences I've ever had, second only to the Wiimote and Nunchuck (simply because they were a little more ergonomic and easier to hold). Being able to rest each arm individually is awesome and so far, I haven't felt the need to invest in a Pro Controller. I have fairly small hands, though. I can see why your mileage would vary.
So overall my impressions are positive save for the fact that I don't really have anything to move on to game-wise at the moment. The store doesn't really boast a lot of interesting stuff in the indie department yet. But I technically haven't "completed" Breath of the Wild and I have some exploring left to do. My hope is that that'll tide me over.

I love your channel I only just found and subscribed to it but I'm loving the breath of positivity each video has. It's nice to find someone who doesn't spend the whole video tearing something down but rather talks about how excited something gets them. Great video and great channel!
Literally when I was waiting for the bus I was looking in the sky expecting to see Naydra or something.
I've had a great time with my Switch! Picked up my preorder at launch and have put in over 90 hours into BotW. I've personally had no huge hardware issues (left Joycon disconnection, dock scratches, the new bending thing) or software glitches. It just plays Zelda and other games, and it does it well. Local multiplayer with Snipperclips has been a blast. So cute! Being able to use handheld mode on bus trips or in between classes has been super enjoyable. And, Arlo, you're right, the Pro controller is AMAZING. So worth it.
Overall, I'm excited to play more games! Mario Kart, Splat2n, Odyssey, and some indie games are on my radar for this year, with the new Fire Emblem, and the rumored Pokemon and Smash games for later on.
...and now back to finding more Korok seeds.

Zelda is great, but what's been the most fun is taking my Switch to a bar and playing Fast RMX, 1,2 Switch, and Binding of Isaac with friends. Putting a couch multiplayer console experience into a handheld is an absolute game changer

I'm not here to debate which games I think are big. I'm sure we'll disagree on the list of what constitutes a big game (like Puyo Puyo Tetris and Mario Kart), but just going with Zelda and Mario Odyssey being the only huge games between now and Christmas.. that's fine by me.
Honestly, I just have so much trouble caring about most of the big releases these days. Breath of the Wild is the first NEW single player game I've gotten into (played about 70 hours so far) in years. Normally I get semi interested and play a game for a couple hours, then get tired of it. In the last decade I've rarely even bought any new release games (bargain bin for me) because I just can't justify the cost. And yet the Switch just called to me. I was hesitant, but I bought it and Zelda sucked me in. If Mario Odyssey can do the same, this'll be the best year in gaming for me in longer than I can remember. The first time I didn't just find it easier to sink into 20 minutes of a quick multiplayer title with local friends (Mario Kart) over starting and finishing a true epic.

Funny you said that but at the end about seeing Koroks everywhere. Paragliding was such a well implemented feature of BotW and I played so much of that game that started almost jumping off of cliffs in other games expecting to paraglide. There were even several times in real life where I'd catch myself thinking "I'll just paraglide down this flight of stairs and save some time."

Hi Arlo, longtime viewer, first-time commenter here. I had to just say, I have been loving the switch, but find the Joy-Cons to be SUPER uncomfortable and would love to know why you like them. Maybe I'm just holding them wrong, but I feel like I can't really hit multiple buttons at the same time comfortably, feel like the stick placement makes it hard to use. Running and jumping in Zelda is painful. Whistling while walking is so hard! I worry that if they don't offer an alternative controller I won't be able to deal with it in every game I play.
I sacrificed my Xbox One to get a Switch on day one.

Watching this after having a switch/ Zelda for 3 weeks now and it's just great. My favorite aspect is just how seem less the experience is. When you dock it, it's on your TV instantly and vice versa. It's that quick and simple. Coming out of rest mode, you pick up in the game immediately. Its so nice that it doesn't reload or have a screen prompt it's just instantaneous. You'll be surprised at how little you seen the switch UI if you're just playing one game for a while especially coming from something like PS4. Didn't plan on saying all that lol great video!

First Console I have ever got on launch. I like the system and i'm 115 hours into breath of wild. But now im like what now? I bought 1-2 switch and SuperBomberman R but I can stand either that much. So now I have to wait and wait and wait for games.....

Get used to the waiting because Nintendo exclusives like Zelda that deliver that quality are extremely rare and normally once a year.
Right now people will start playing games out of boredom and waste money on stuff they normally would never buy.
Nintendo Consoles are best to buy 2 years after release since there will be Top tier 1 games out that you can pick from and the hardware always gets a buff.
Buy the indies. They're great!!
I'm really excited to se what they have to offer for this year and beyond. There's a lot of games, like Skyrim and the recently announced Cave Story, that I actually haven't played yet and am looking forward to adding to my Switch collection. I am also very fortunate and thankful to have received a lot of money for Christmas and my birthday to buy said games so unlike the WiiU and 3ds I'll be able to buy most games on release instead of waiting until Christmas. All in all I love my Switch so far and I'm more than ecstatic for future releases!

Month in - I feel ya on the low hype. I loved the """gimmicks""" that the Wii and Wii U brought. Why? Because, if utilized CORRECTLY, it could bring modes of entertainment not available with normal gameplay designs. Which was a huge awesome factor for me. Don't get me wrong, I've gamed like a madman - even more mad than many (putting 900 hours into a good number of games) - but I still wanted something different, something with an actual sense of variety and change that traditional consoles all but exhausted.
So the Wii and Wii U? Amazing consoles for me, even if a majority of companies did nothing special with them.
The Switch? .... ehhhhhh.... This is one of those systems where it's the game that matters. That's by far no means a bad thing, but it is to say that the experience revolves around the games - PERIOD. Meaning, there's no real use for the console. Wait, I take that back, the Switch's touchscreen and portability give it use outside of the traditional consoles - but those aren't huge steps outside of what a PC could do. The other consoles have lost their value as consoles - nowadays a PC is preferred and is better. Only exclusives prevent them from fizzling out. But outside of that, they really don't have a reason to exist.
Before DLC, patches, and the like, consoles offered a form of entertainment that couldn't be replicated by PCs.... that is, they were SOLELY for gaming. Want to play a game? Pop it in and play. Boom. Want to play something els? Pop that in. Boom. PC? Thaat depended on your rig and setup.... and even then the patches (while useful) meant your games weren't ready to go anytime you wanted them to be.
PS4 and XOne are steps BACK from the gaming formula for consoles... but we forgive them because of their exclusives.
Nintendo Switch really isn't too far from that. I mean, Nintendo exclusives are their own pedigree. But there will come a time when designers will match that polish as a STANDARD. So, really, the difference is in the system itself.
Can't say I know what the final system will feel like (gotta wait for them to throw in the paid internet and video recording), but right now... it's just conveniently portable. Ultra conveniently. Plus there's touchscreen for touch capacitive games, local Switches multiplayer (which also allows local transfer of game/system updates), and fancy motion controls (though a step down from the WiiMotion+)... but those all feel separate. Like, only certain games get their advantage. Unlike with the Wii/Wii U, where their """gimmicks""" were EXPECTED (as-in: if you didn't use them in your game, you'd get weird looks). But here, it's all about options...
So you have the option to get hyped... and frankly, thattakes away a lot of the excitement. Kinda like choice vs design: we all think we want choice, but masterful design always trumps our choice experiences. Only MMO players legitimately think otherwise.

Ehh just BotW by itself trumps most systems' entire launch lineups. Add in Shovel Knight, Fast RMX, and Snipperclips as bonus material and I for one was completely satisfied with the launch. (What's less satisfying is the near two month wait for anything else worth picking up. :P )

At this moment, the only real thing going for the Switch are it's game. It doesn't seem to have any real gimmicks. The problem with this is that the console isn't really powerful, even last-gen consoles are more powerful. We'll just have to see how the games after Mario are.
Anyways, I'm waiting for the next Xbox. I've just drifted away from Nintendo. Their consoles aren't too powerful and the games don't interest me well. I'm more of a PC gamer anyway.
spongedog if you're more of a pc gamer why the fuck are you buying an Xbox. Even the Scorpio will likely be outdated and underpowered when it finally releases. plus it'll likely cost a small fortune.

First of all, flops are the just the number of basic floating point operations per second. That just roughly means the number of numbers you can crunch each second. Computing floating point numbers is not everything that the gpu does, but if you are comparing the same operation, there is no such thing as exchange rate, because you are comparing the same thing.

Totally with you about loving Nintendo's different innovations throughout the years. I loved motion-controlled games including Kinect and also loved the double-screen concept on Wii U. I love playing games in new ways all the time and no one like Nintendo can provide that. Taking home console-quality games on the go is potentially a game changer.

I think it's funny that you say "we're all back to our normal daily lives" Arlo my life will never be the same since my Switch I've taken it everywhere, short car trips, long car trips, public transport, friend's homes... school (against my better judgement) the Switch has honestly changed my life.

i enjoy your videos so, so much. please keep trucking :) - might i recommend "shovel knight" when it comes out for the switch - if you like 2d platformers, you may very much enjoy that. it's going to come with new content and there's quite a bit there already if you haven't played it. also: there's no real way to tell how long it might take before "yooka-laylee" arrives on the system [and the jontron controversy notwithstanding] that seems like a perfect fit for this platform.
See, I did EXACTLY that with the Switch, Arlo. I looked at it for a long time, just thinking how I finally have it in my hands, looking at the system design.
And that's because I had this concept in my mind since I was a kid. I always wanted "premium games as a handheld". and I got it, and I'm amazed! can't wait for the virtual console, but Zelda and Mario Kart are helping

I’ve had my Switch a little more than a week... and I am IN LOVE with it!!! While I have both an Xbox One S and a PS4 (both of which I love as well), the Switch holds a special place in my experience with gaming. As far as my other systems are concerned (be they my older handhelds or my more contemporary home consoles), I either bought them a good while after they were realeased and had since been put on sale, or picked them up used for cheap. The Switch, on the other hand, is the first console I wanted and got when it was still new. Additionally, the purchasing of my Xbox and PS4 were mostly motivated by wanting to play just one or two particular games that were either exclusive to one of those systems, or just otherwise better when played on them. With the Switch, I don’t just want to play one or two particular games exclusive to it, but it’s the first time I really wanna play SEVERAL of the major titles that have come to it: Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey name just a couple I’m still dying to play; I’ve already played the heck out of Splatoon 2 (a game I wasn’t even sure I’d like), and I’m still going back for more.

I have large hands and was amazed how comfortable the joycon are. either on their own or attached. the plastic controller dock is horribly uncomfortable and was used for exactly one minute.
