Lost Locomotives Recreating A Clan and Gresley B17

  • Out of 10 clan Class locomotives built none were saved from the breakers yard There were 73 B17 Class and none of those survived either. Two gaps in our locomotive history are now being filled with the building of brand new ones using original drawings and where possible improvements to cure known problems with the original design. Many skills are being lost with the big decline in engineering, these builds are helping to keep and teach them to younger generation. Sadly sourcing suitable metals is one of the problems to overcome as our ability to make the high grade needed for axles has gone and these are being made in South Africa Other steel needed is being made in Italy, most steel is UK sourced however. The main focus on these builds is to get a locomotive capable of running on the min line so everything used has to be certified and approved materials. Thought is also being given to the way steam will be raised, already now new fuels are being trialled on existing locomotives, with a new build it will be easier to adapt the design to suit new fuels.

I can appreciate this video for what it is, we don't need rivet counters on here as well as on the model railway channels. A lot of things have changed since these machines were originally built. Some things will have been improved in the last 75 years and others will have been dropped due to modern improvements. If you like the video let the posters know if not shut up and move on.

Just what we were saying about the Clan cab. It was the use of a metric bolt that was spotted for goodness sake. Are you going to grind those off, pointing at the bolt head markings. These are brand new locomotives not replicas, so of course things will be done in the modern way to make something that works better yet retains the overall look of the scrapped versions. There is always someone at a model show like that and they are all ones who have no photos or video to show of their perfect models.

Thank you daystates Yes a few more years to go but next year they are hoping the Clans cab will be fitted and some controls made, an idea then is to let people get in the cab. The B17 is making quicker progress at the moment with wheels and a few castings already made.

Great video & impressive to see the progress with the Clan in particular. More pacifics are much needed to help keep mainline steam running on the national network. Will be a happy day when Hengist finally takes to the tracks in service!

Thank you Steve Hengist was the main thing I wanted to see there, the standards are my favourite steam locomotives. One improvement being made to her is a slightly higher boiler pressure making her more powerful and able to accelerate faster to help keep pace with the modern railway. It will be a happy day indeed when she is out on the main hauling a passenger train.

@@cedarcam I love the standards too, steam loco drivers today have told me they also love them because their engineering DNA is perfect for practical use & they also look just great! Unfortunately, I couldn't make it to the open day as I'm often unwell but after being aware of the project for a while & seeing your video I've now joined the Standard Steam Loco Co building Hengist so that in some small way I can help it come into being. Not done that before with anything so cheers for the inspiration!

@@steveevans6241 I have read the standards were well liked by many drivers and firemen. They just came a bit too late or rather if steam had lasted a bit longer as was intended the improvements like being made to Hengist would of been made to them. I wonder just how they would of performed then. Good you have joined the group. I am looking at doing the same after seeing them and talking to one person involved who is an old workmate. I am a member of PSPS who operate the only sea going paddle steamer in the world Waverley so although not entirely new to me would be the only railway group I would be a part of. I think it will be rewarding knowing you helped get her built.

@@cedarcam Hi again, definitely looking forward to seeing her take shape as the build progresses. I've not taken a step like this before despite being a railway fan ever since seeing my first train. I'll get involved as far as I can & as I think it's a rather special project & really interests me above the other new builds going on. Also, later this year another great BR standard pacific is hopefully coming back into service from overhaul, Standard 8 No: 71000 Duke of Gloucester. That was modified in preservation from its originally built form to improve performance but whilst the modifications did enhance it, this time they've returned some things back to original state for various reasons. The benefits & hazards of blending old & new engineering is an ever present challenge but a really interesting one, which the Hengist crew will also no doubt encounter. Standard No. 70000 Britannia is also back in service after a repair from failing last summer, but is having some problems settling down which I hope will be ironed out as it's a beautiful engine & I'm hoping to ride an excursion behind her again when its possible. As for the lovely Waverley! Well, I first sailed on her from Penarth to Weston super Mare when I was a youngster in the late 70's/early 80s, a superb vessel. The last time I saw her was on Clacton pier, in last year's early October Indian summer. I've also been on the Kingswear Castle around Dartmouth a couple of times too, another lovely boat. Other propulsions have come along & eclipsed it, but there's something special & magical about steam power in whatever form it takes. It's hard to explain, but they're somehow machine creatures with some kind of life in them in a strange sort of way.

@@steveevans6241 There was a stand here from the Duke of Gloucester group. I was talking to one of them and he said she could be ready by August. They were playing video of her and in some views a lot of steam comes from one side, unbelievably when doing some work someone drilled a small hole in a pipe causing a leak, they fixed that and have made some more refinements so she should perform even better this time. I saw video on here when Britannia failed. A very loud banging going into the distance in the night, I had heard various stories of what happened and found the truth from the Duke of Gloucester man. The crosshead fractured, he has seen in in Crewe and said they were very lucky. I told of an accident on the Settle Carlisle with a Britannia when the bottom slide bar fell off resulting in a bad derailment and collision with another train, he had not heard about that. A modification was made to the slide bar fittings. With Britannia the same could of happened which is why this time luck was with them. Now more testing for potential fractures is going to be done on all main line locomotives. Britannia got dragged back to Crewe from Carlisle after a bearing on a piston rod ran hot, I was here on the day she failed otherwise was going to go to Carlisle that day. Good to see she is now repaired, the bearing was not a big problem to repair. I love all old machinery especially steam powered. A steam engine is the most life like machine man has ever made something special and magical as you say. I have not been on Kingswear Castle, maybe one day I will get chance.

Depending how this B17 goes who knows, they may build a 4-8-2 One thing that has really helped the B17 is the wheels had patterns and some other parts shared with Tornado, by next years open day they hope to have a rolling chassis with cab and looking more like a locomotive.

So do I. They have made a few changes to both locomotives which were known to be weak points The B17 has a modified bogie to hold the rails better for a smoother ride, less track force. Things like that will no doubt make these better performers and the possibility of running faster than currently permitted for most main line steam.

The captions on this video are the same as on others and, so far, you are the only one who has said they find them hard to read.
