So the first thing I noticed is that.
Martin never touches his Mid and High Eqs when mixing.
You see when he chooses to mix the next song in, he always has its LOW EQ turned down, while the other song has all its EQs centered to the 12 O’clock position.
This gives Martin only 2 things to focus on when mixing the next song in: the volume fader and Low EQ knob, and what he typically does when he mixes is this.
Personally I enjoy this method of EQing because it keeps things simple, and if you’re a beginner DJ, I highly recommend emulating this style.
So Martin Garrix is known for having high energy mixes. And there are two transitions he uses to keep his mix exciting.
One keeps you on the edge of your toes wondering what he’s going to mix next, and the other heightens the energy of the mix up and keeps you dancing,
So let’s begin with the first one which is an EDM chorus switch transition.
So this type of transitioning works by basically mixing the next song’s build up section in, when the current songs build up section hits. And when the current song is about to hit it’s chorus section, you switch volumes, so that the other song’s chorus hits instead.
So this is a great way to keep the mix exciting and unique for the listener and another way he sustains the energy of his mix is thru having the build up section of the next song begin, when the current songs’ chorus ends
So all this really takes is proper counting. So if you know the chorus section of your current song ends here, and if you know the build up section of your next song begins here. Then simply mix the next song here when you reach this section at the current song!
Now, to keep his mix fun and unique, and to keep busy. Martin likes to accent his mix. Which means that he likes to turn knobs and activate effects at certain sections in songs to better emphasize them.
So he accents his mix in 3 ways.
1. He activates a 1/4 Echo Effect and turns the Filter Knob Clockwise then counter clockwise
2. He activates a Dub Echo FX and turns that knob clockwise and counter clockwise as well.
3. He uses Dub Echo FX to also hype up a build up
Since we’re on the topic of transitioning. The effects Martin likes to use when he transitions out are the following:
1. 1/4 Echo Effect
2. 25% Reverb Effect
3. A Dub Echo FX brought to the 1 o clock position
4. A combination of a 1/4 Echo / 25%Reverb effect along with a Dub Echo FX

Next : james hype bitch 😂
he did it before, one more time and losing it by fisher.
Thanks for that!
Please no lol
Absolutely agree! The guy is a legend and there is a lot more to cover than just one transition for example the way he uses acapella with tech-house is insane.
What Rumen said!
so basically, Martin's DJ'ing is simplistic, but practical
oh btw, definitely break down Headhunterz' DJ'ing
Yeah! You can say that! And thanks tor suggesting! I’ll consider it!
You should !!!!
Hi anym, fancy seeing you here!
omg yessssssss
YEES HEADHUNTERZ!!
His transitions are honestly fool proof. I guess less is indeed more.
Woot! I definitely agree!
I was gonna say, this is all stuff I taught myself by just experimenting lol
And it's great to see he keeps a simple line of FX: Echo, Reverb. Very effective in club and EDM setup.
I love how Carlo teaches on the ddj 400! That way emerging djs can do Martin garrix skills too! It shows that a good dj can dj on any type of equipment cheap or expensive👍
Totally!
Remember he's a producer that djs not s DJ that produces
Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts!
Well Idk, there's s picture of him with a dj console and he was a kid
there is this dude named Dj Carlo Atendido idk if you know him but if you do pls do his mixing style thx
Hahaha! Yeah heard he's cool! hahaha😁
I know this guy! He "INSANE" and "EPIC" In the best possible way. ;)
Love these insights. Like these types of reviews. Brings to light how different DJs do their thing and how we can emulate them while making it our own. Great work as always. Love how you make this so transparent. Carl Cox should be next!
Everyone shifts the low end. It establishes what song has dominance over the others
This whole video is DJing basics that any DJ would know and do. Not just Garrix
Yeah I just commented exactly that! But latelly people been using more the filter to make the swaps instead of using only the bass!
I was always curious what Martin Garrix did with his set and I also could follow this even thought I don't know anything at all about ''DJ'ing'' , so thank you for this! (I only didn't really understand the last bit)
Yay! Thanks for watching!
I've never seen anybody explain what a DJ does while they are back there twisting knobs. I know everybody is going to have their own individual style which is what should make a DJ unique from others out there. I have zero experience as a DJ but have always wanted to know some of the basics of how it is done. So for me your explanations in a sense laid a basic foundation that I hope will enable me to build from.
Thanks for the info, I do appreciate it.
czcams.com/video/zj96XCEyHT8/video.html
Originally it was blending two records together at the same time, while controlling speed, eq levels, and other details to make seamless transitions from one record to the next. Eventually it became a skill contest as tricks were developed to make it more entertaining. Cutting, scratching, juggling and mixing are techniques used for vinyl djing.
I have been looking for a video just like this and haven't found one until today. Thanks so much, Carlo!!!
You're very welcome! Enjoy!
Do Hardwell next, particularly his Amsterdam “I Am Hardwell” 2013 set, where he displays a lot of his techniques.
Lots of likes for this one! Thanks!
Yeah. We can heard it in hardwell on air 114. Bunch of techniques that he make to hype the set
czcams.com/video/40tIpgFVBRs/video.html
i was actually looking for this. thanks for spending the time to analise his mixing, and bring it into a very well compiled video
Great! Thanks for appreciating the work put into this! :)
Martin is amazing, personally I don't like it when music producers fake djing just as a way to play they're music but Martin is a insane and inspirational DJ
He is indeed a DJ that inspires us a lot! Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts!
agreed. I'm personally producer first, DJ 2nd, but yeah at least learn DJ'ing
@@AnymMusic same i started producing music and DJing about 3 years ago now
EXCELLENT IDEA!!!!! plelase make more of this videos with other DJS!!!!! thanks for the great content Carlo!!
I'd love to see you breakdown some Tiesto. I love your channel and this series! I started DJing recently and your tutorials have been so helpful. Thanks!
Standed mixing that goes way back but on point and done at the highest level is simply untouchable 🎧🎶
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for watching!
Love your vids, super helpful for a novice dj like myself. Keep em coming!!
Woot woot! Happy to hear that!
Man....love this video... you explained so well with actual example of the DJ himself.🙏😀
The most priceless tips for the beginners who couldn't find out what effects and transitions +x used and who wanted to practice.
Thanks for your feedback!
This is very useful to me as a beginner. Thank you. I'd love to see some techno or deep house DJs like Carl Cox, Nicole Moudaber, or the Claude VonStroke :)
I'm an EDM fan with no desire to be a DJ, but this was still hella interesting
Then check this out- czcams.com/video/zj96XCEyHT8/video.html
Can you do Ben UFO? He's world renowned for his DJ skills, and ability to mix any genre. Might be nice to do a DJ that isn't EDM
Ben ufo isn’t a crazy mixer, usually let’s songs play out. More of a “right song right time” type of dj.
@@austinrobertson6160 that is just absolutely not true in any shape or form. Ben UFO is phenomenal at mixing and is found seamlessly going from track to track with only perhaps a couple of minutes of the full track exposed. His recent 2019 Dekmantel Boiler Room is a clear example of that.
Of course he plays the right track at the right time but there’s just way more to the complexity and art of his mixing
Great video Carlo!! Hope you make it into a full fledged series.
When I started off DJ-ing with my little controller, I used to mix EDM songs. And I used to listen to so many EDM artists but Martin Garrix was my fave along with Kygo. His CZcams set on KISS FM I used to watch on repeat and even had a little book with the track names and acapellas that they would mix with and even had mix in and mix out points. Sadly I lost that little notebook... I used to think of songs that I would insert or acapellas that would work better.
Thanks for the feedback!
Wow thank you I was el seeing what effect Martin used for his transitions because it’s sounds so cool thank you for the help
You bet!
@@djcarlo oh Abe btw what is that song you played at 3:38 from edm example 1
I usually transition in 8-16 bars. When you said 64 I was like “WHAT?!”
Will have to try that next time.
Awesome video man, learned a lot.
I love your energy! You're so positive
So great you did this video. I'm just starting to dj and martin garrix is my favorite artist by far.
Rock on!
Thanks for the insight Carlos, I learned a few things for my next gig.
I need a breakdown of James Hype's canary wharf set lol
Rock on!
Please breakdown Carl Cox and Armin van Buuren!
This is a great video Carlo! Love these.
Thank god someone has good taste
your lesson really help, big up all the way from South Africa
That’s great to know! Sending my love back to South Africa!

Hey, what a great video !! loved this
Thank you so much!! Glad you liked this one!
A Joyryde breakdown would be awesome. Thanks for making these videos! I really like the theme of this video as a new dj.
On it!
Breaking down Timmy's and Dj Snakes sets would be amazing they bring so much energy to the table 💯
got it!
these videos are so helpful. thank you
I'm so glad!
Doing what you do the best.... thank you bro, learning more and more
Awww! I appreciate these kind words! I’ll continue doing this! Cheers!
I really like this video :D
Do a mixing breakdown of Armin Van Buuren :D
Noted!
Do Ben Klock, he is an amazing Techno DJ, that does very long lasting and subtle Techno Mixes!
Cool stuff Carlo thanks for taking your time to observe and share the knowledge, I will surely be using this at next houseparty ("Hapa" in Korean) lol
Go for it!
Awesome Vid! Need more just like this!
You got it!
It would be cool if you could break down Don Diablo's or Laidback Luke's mixing styles
Cool, alright thanks!
I LOVES HIS DUB ECHO EFFECT SO MUCH...ESPECIALLY DURING BUILD-UPs...////
Woohoo!
This was the coolest breakdown I have ever seen. Thanks Carlo. Was really helpful, can you breakdown David Guetta’s and Nicky Romero’s mixing?
Great suggestions! Thanks for dropping by!
Thanks bro, this one is amazing . . .
You forgot about the fact that martin always mixes in key
Right! Thanks for mentioning that!
I Mix psytrance & this is not possible for that style! I don’t really mess up with the tracks! It’s not possible with psytrance because the tracks are too long & all of them has a story to tell & psytrance dancers don’t like to be disturbed by jumping from this track to that track! I normally have a good track selection & I cut the resting time & give the dance floor a rest time when I feel they need it! Beside the guy that was mentoring me mentioned that music producers stay in the studio & make these tracks why Mix it with something else if it’s good already! We don’t have to touch the nubs all the time & add Fx & this & that to show the crowd yeah look at me I’m the dj! I’m the one! It’s less about the dj & more about the dance floor
Thanks for sharing this
@@djcarlo most welcome 🙏🏼
Thanks alot for this!❤️☺️
Amazing analysis - love this new series! I think in a few years, Martin might become as good as DJ Carlo :)
Thanks for the feedback! and wow the support haha! Humbled.
Please do Hardwell mixing breakdown his mashups are Outta the park❤️
Thanks for the suggestion!
Breakdown A-Trak or Jazzy Jeff. It’ll be interesting to compare the older DJs with Martin Garrix’s more modern style
True! Meanwhile check out my vid of Jazzy Jeff! Enjoy!

Hey, thanks!
Simple and effective techniques. Good to know that Martin prefers keeping it simple.
Don't know what he is talking about but its cool......
😂😂😂Never seen turn table in life
Thanks for watching!
try to breakdown laidback luke. one of the technical and legend dj
Nice! Sounds good! Thanks for that!
Watch his In My Mind videos on his channel. He basically talks you through exactly what he does as he's mixing. Highly recommended it to anyone looking to learn how to DJ. (after I've recommended Atenditos, obviously 😉)
thanks bro great video Carlo
Any time!
Great work brother💯❤
And happy diwali to you🙌
Oh yeah happy Diwali to my brothers in India! Thank you all for your support! ❤️
Try to breakdown afrojack or laidback luke
Great suggestion! I’ll look on to that! Thanks!
@@djcarlo that would be awesome!
@@djcarlo def laidback
Yes!! especially AFROJACK🔥🤨🔥
how about someone who doesn’t mix solely big room shit... there’s other house, dubstep, and electronic genres that do more mixing then the “classic” build up switch track new drop technique that’s been used for almost every UMF
Yo breakdown Skrillex, I’ve seen him do some pretty interesting and unique things in his live sets
Got it! Thanks!
Thank you for your videos i check them out frequently! I would like to see you break down dj mixes from Ben Nicky!
Great suggestion! Thanks for always watching!
Thank you. This is very helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Cool!
Im not into this type of music, James Hype sets the standard hands down. His style of djing is what got me into djing 18 years ago, prior to this "EDM" era of so called music.
Do next time David guetta’s show at the end of AMF.
Why not! Thanks for that suggestion! Keep em coming!
You deserve more followers man 👍 mad respect
Spread the word! Thank you for your support!
Awesome explanation Dj Carlo. Very nice simple. Less is More!
Glad you liked it! Thanks!!
Would be keen on one about Timmy trumpet
Thanks for the idea!

Next: Hucci, Quix and RL Grime!
Cool!
Next: Yellow Claw
Their mixing in a nutshell: start the next track as soon as the drop of the previous track hits
Really nice video. Martin Garrix is my favorite DJ and producer 👍🔥
He's one of the best for sure! Hope you learned!
He's awesome! Thanks for watching!
I started Djing a few weeks ago and do mostly the same transitions. I think they are simple and very effective.
Next one: AMC 6Deck live mix
Oh yes! Thanks for the cool suggestion!
can you do a breakdown of james hype?
Noted! Thanks for your suggestion!
One of best thing I like about Martin Garrix is during his live session he is not afraid of bring the build up mix on the fly and keep the energy level same of previous drop. Most of the time I try to bring second build up & drop to hype and use its outro for the build up next drop, it's fun & more powerful. So basically sometimes I start my mix with first drop, sounds messed up if I forget about scale but its fun though. For deep mix analysis I want u to check out Dj Braindead, he is like a magician just like one of my best Dj Carlo😊😊
Thanks for sharing!
Epic breakdown!
Glad you like it!

Sure thing! Thanks for visiting and for suggesting! Stay tuned for more!
break down Avicii’s mixing style please! Im looking forward to that
I’m taking producing/DJ camps in August and I plan on watching this legend while I progress
Go for it! Actually, this entire breakdown series might be of help for techniques!
This video is pure gold
Next Charlotte de Witte
I'll take note of this! Thanks for sharing your suggestion!
As you know, he is more of a very talented producer than Dj .These kinds of tricks are a typical Dutch style of basic DJ teaching.
I know because I have taken the same classes. Less is more!
Cool, thanks for your comment!
Dude, this content is fire. I want a DJ Deck now.
Yay! Glad you think so! Go for it!
@@djcarlo Lol I would but I'm way to broke and I Feel like there aren't as many Gigs right now for live music.
Back at it again😎🔥
yep! thanks for joining me!
So you’re trying to explain litterally dj basics 101 .. can you next do a video of a rally driver and mention how he uses the gas and break pedals separately 🤣
Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts. But some of my viewers are also beginners!
Same thoughts. There is nothing “Martin Garrix” about this. This is exactly how I (and all my fellow mixhead DJs) mixed 20-30 years ago, before the invention of Sync, filters and David Guetta...
please do BlackCoffee , he has really cool and unique dying techniques and uses only one hand.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll take note of this!
I would really love if you do something like this with other really well know and Pro djs out of the EDM scene like Ricardo Vilalobos,Luciano,Speedy J,Ben Clock,DVS1 or the ones working with stems like Chris Liebing,Ritchie Hawtkin,Nicole Moudaber on the Techno scene and some others on the Progressive scene like Emok,Bitmonx...
The type of transitions Martin does, are the basic transitions most electronic music djs do,or used to.
Since hardwares came with filter, people been using more the filter to make the EQ swap instead of using just the bass knob.
Thanks for great info
