Making a Plane Adjusting Brass Mallet

- The plane adjusting mallet is used for tapping the iron or blade of the plane to gain more depth of the cut. A tap on the top of the body near the throat will retract the iron for a shallower cut. In this episode Bob builds a brass mallet to adjust the new curved bottom plane in built in the last episode. The walnut and brass hammer is designed to complement the walnut hand plane.

I saw two works of art, the hammer itself and your drafting drawing of it. Thanks for sharing it, much appreciated.
Done, done, and done!
Watching your "back catalogue" at the moment. Great design and craftsmanship in the tools that you are making...
Amazing craftsmanship! Very cool build!
Beautiful tool, just beautiful
Thank-you SIR I ALREADY started to draw out my Handle Your Finished Product is Beautiful !
Excellent design. Good thinking to apply the epoxy to the head slot vs the handle. Useful little trick to remember for any number of applications.
Beautiful hammer. Great job.
Nice music addition.
Nice work. Just a small tip from an old humble teacher. Of course it's not a heavy duty tool but a diagonal wedge you would have more pressure between wood and brass on the 4 sides of the housing then two small wedges and esthetically nicer. Keep up the good work and be safe.
Beautiful tooling. You are a true craftsman
Bob nice workmanship very detailed with a great outcome.
Beautiful hammer.
Very nice mallet. Congrats
Wow! All the tools you make are so beautiful, small pieces of art. Just love it!
Thanks!
Beautiful hammer. Thanks
That is a work of art.
Gorgeous tool.
Wow, old school design and hand tool manufacturing.
That is a beautiful tool.
I agree, beautiful tool
You are making it beautiful. Really enjoy.
Thanks so much !
Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for another great tool making episode!
Finally, someone who works in a logical manner... old school and reliable.
Beautiful work. Although I would prefer an oil finish. Danish, Tung or Linseed. An oil finish just feels better in my hand.
I love all your videos they have inspired me to build my own tool and boat
This is fun to watch.
Nice work! All the best from Argentina
I am a hobby machinist but love your tool making videos.
Beautifully done, thanks for sharing

Great video! Appreciated the coverage of your design process. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for watching.
Voila! It's a pleasure to see a journeyman artist and craftsman at work.
Beautiful work!
Beautiful Work.
Gorgeous!
Thank you for sharing.
You can't buy that in the shops, beautifully and practically made the art of any craftsmanship.
I love your videos that I have watched. Very clear. I hope I can make as good of videos as you some day
Just a small detail, if I can be so bold. On the bottom of the brass piece that’s is to become the hammer head might I suggest filling a small flat where the handle is to meet it so that the round stock does not leave a gap. It’s a beautiful piece and I think this small detail might be the only addition. Thank you for another good video.
Thank you for Sharing. A great video of quality tool making Well done :)
Loved seeing you drawing... reminded me of sitting across from my father at his drawing table, the smell of pencil sharpenings and cigarette smoke mixed with old paper plans of previous buildings he had designed is my fondest childhood memory.
I'm not into boat building, however, I totally dig this channel for the craftsmanship. The tool-building has me hooked.
Yay BOAT!!
great video, thank you very much.
Great work!
I agree nice job on the mallet and the plane. Great videos, stay safe. J.
the tool making videos are great -thanks for the content!
Glad you like them!
Thanks for watching!
Nice bob stay safe
Very nice job...
Beautiful work Bob.
Just beautiful! Take care!
Your drafting plans for your tools are as beautiful as the completed tool. Awesome craftsmanship Bob,. Thanks for sharing.
That mallet is a piece of art, beautiful and very well done. It complements the plane beautifully.
I lack the skills, but can appreciate your excellent craftsmanship. Both are not only beautiful tools, but works of art as well.
Very nice!
Real arts and crafts, thanks Bob!
Lovely!
I haven't a clue whether I can build as you have demonstrated any of the things on your videos, but one thing is for certain - nothing will get done if I don't start. Thank you for the motivation and inspiration.
I just found your channel, and subscribed.
Thank you for your videos.
Really nice work and video. I'll definitely be back to check out more of your videos.
You work with such patience and discipline. Bravo.
great, inspiring job !
Thank you! Cheers!
Your tool making videos are some of the best on youtube.
Great looking hammer, fantastic craftsmanship & precision exhibited in this video, thanks for posting.
Just found your channel, great content. Thank you.
When in doubt, make it a work of art. And, it can't hurt to make the plans works of art either. I see why my woodworking isn't what it could be; I wasn't a sculptor first!
It's those little nuances, like the brass tube through the lanyard hole and maple wedges, that draw attention through their subtlety. Very beautiful.
Good one!
I always look forward to this series Bob. You are definitely a bright spot in our days. Thanks for being there...
Building a boat requires a lot more skills than just carpenrty and you have shown quite a few of them in these vids already. I think we may be seeing that anvil some time in the future...... Keep well and keep on keeping on.
Alec Steele has a 140 pound anvil coming out, he just released a testing video on the first one from the foundry. Great looking English style anvil, for sure.
Beautiful job making a matching mallet for yhe backing out plane. They look marvelous together.
Neat little setting hammer!! The brass in the lanyard whole is a nice touch.
Bob, beautiful tools you're making. Now you need to make a tool chest to keep them in. Perhaps a treasure chest design?
Very nice. I like the idea of adding walnut dust to the epoxy. I never thought of that.
It really makes the joints seamless. Thanks!
A beautiful hammer, indeed.
Looks great, Bob; excellent job, as always.
Great video!
Thanks!
Great job... Beautiful as always...
Nice!! Waiting for the next boat video :D
old school drafting, does my heart good! Thanks for the videos
I appreciate the quality of your work.
Inspiring! Thanks for the really nice videos. Jan.
Wow they look fantastic together!
That is the beauty of making your own tools. You can make them fit your hand(s).
Nice mallet.
Beautiful work! Very interested in following along. Thanks. 🇨🇦
Looks great Bob! Thanks for the video, love the tool building incorporated into the boat project.
Looks beautiful Bob, stay healthy!
Looks great Bob. You stay safe as well!
As ever I love your work. The honky tonk music, with brief interlude to explain your filing, just made me chuckle!
Such unbelievable talent, Bob. You never cease to amaze!
I really enjoyed seeing your design process! It is truly inspiring.
Beautiful hammer. Really appreciate all the brass and the details.
That is beautiful! When all this is over, I would love to stop by again! Take care of yourself. I so enjoy watching your videos. I got to try to make my own brass mallet!
Great drawing, and a beautiful build!
Love it!
I enjoy making tools for my shop and this has me wanting to change the handles on every hammer I own. Great example of fine craftsmanship. Keep it up!
So elegant and well thought out! Both the end product and the manufacturing process is a work of art
Looks to me like you went way beyond beautiful with this mallet, Bob-gorgeous work! Stay safe.
