- In 2016, Nintendo released an enhanced port of Super Mario 3 for the Wii U, which included a remake of the original game as well as bonus levels from the failed Game Boy Advance e-Reader card scanning attachment. This video is a review and gameplay of Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario 3 on the Wii U. The game is currently available on the Wii U eShop, but it may not be available indefinitely, so be sure to get it while you can!

The Wii U eShop won't be around forever! Highly recommend grabbing this while you can! 👍
👋
Nice find Gruz! I can’t believe I hadn’t heard about power ups from other games being available in SMB3.
Also the video where you go into the first door in SMB2 is legend
Thanks so much for this video..... I just watched it, grabbed my wii u and downloaded the game.
Yo thanks for putting this out man. Woulda been kicking myself if I didn't grab this. ✌🏻✌🏻
if someone can please preserve all eshop games, you can do that by using wii u usb helper and saving the games to an hard drive
Shame that all this Mario greatness got locked behind those hard to find cards. I’d play the hell out of this if it were ever released on Switch.
...On switch online lol. That will be sad
@@gabeznl3591 better than nothing at this point
you can play the hell out of it via roms. lol
@@jameswiggle if there's a rom floating out there that actually has all these e-reader levels built in, I'd love to know where I could find it!
@@MFG1243 just use cheats to unlock them
The E-Reader may have flopped, but it really made Advance 4 something special. I bought all of, and still have all of the cards I could find in the US.
Fun fact, there are more e-reader systems sold than Wii U units! Wii U was Nintendo's biggest failure outside of Virtual Boy, meaning e-reader outsold Wii U!
That’s crazy
@@pika62221 wiiu was fun. I remember the only thing i hated about mine was having to be close to the home base. I lived in a tiny apartment at the time and the pad still didnt reach my bedroom from the living room. I said if they make this system without the base. It would be awesome. The switch did it
Great news! You can STILL play this game by getting the Switch Online Expansion Pack!! It has SMB3 From Mario Advance 4 and some great start line-ups too! :D
Crazy to think that devs actually cared about re-releases back then. Game industry is going backwards
It really, really is.
Lots of industries are. It's the age of extreme corner-cutting. Everything is run by the bean-counters now
backwards would imply that they used to be worse than they are now. It's never been this bad before, so sadly, this is the future.
They cared as much as today.
For a well though Super Mario Advance 4 on Wii U you have a worst N64 Emulator with Ocarina of Time.
For a well imagined Super Mario Advance series on GBA you have the over priced NES Classics on the same console.
There were always a mix between good and bad re-release.
@@Haganeren well yeah, but I don't think devs were so blatanly lazy with them like in the case of GTA Trilogy
"Digitized voice clips"
*PLEASE GOD NO, DON'T MAKE ME GO BACK*
As someone who can't stand the Zelda 3 GBA voices, these Mario versions make me leery. Though maybe Mario's VA works.
Those secret levels are quite fascinating. And also I actually do recall seeing this game on the Wii U e shop I just didn't have any interest in it because I mean I already had various ways of playing Super Mario Bros 3 anyway so I was just like nah who cares. But seeing these extra features and levels and blending in so many different games together and each level is pretty awesome.
Wow this is such a great video, I had no idea this release or these bonus levels existed. Thanks for this!
As a owner of the physical cart, I am so annoyed the whole world e was removed in the European release.
The reason why it was removed in the EU is because the e-Reader wasn't released in Europe at all. It was only released in Japan, the US, and Australia. Outside of Japan, this add-on failed, and was discontinued in 2004. Inside Japan however, it was a success, to the point where it was still sold until the discontinuation of the GBA.
You got me scared for a moment there, I just bought the European Wii U release and thought you were referring to that one as well.
@@TheFrantastic Yeah, my bad on not being specific. I meant the original GBA cart
@@Nicszerg It's alright, you did mention the physical cart, so I should have paid more attention instead of panicking so quickly. Still, you could dump the rom of the Wii U version in the original cartridge if you wanted the full experience, tho I guess that wouldn't make much sense in a purist collection sense unless you got another cartridge.
Same but we also had no special A-coins to collect
The e-Reader levels were actually literally the devs having a nice working level editor, it just wasn't public.
I like creative bits and pieces these levels offered it very Nintendo in design with an emphasis of novelty.
This also introduced the invisible cement blocks that are only revealed with the Tanooki Suit's statue form!
Played so many versions of smb 3 but the gba version is my favorite. The look and feel of it stand out to me more than any other system. A bonus is the sounds like Mario saying "lucky" or "just what I needed" I find myself mimicking these everytime as a full grown man. Good times would love to play the extra levels though.
A lot of these levels feel like challenge levels you can clearly tell that they wouldn't work if they were made into a main game however the idea of adding elements from multiple Mario games into one Mario game sounds like a wonderful idea. It would definitely be way less stale then just making another New super Mario Bros game again for the fifth time.
Yeeeeeees
At a glance the e-reader levels look very interesting
It seems to be especially fitting for SMB3, because among official Mario games, it has the shortest, but most, levels. And it frequently visits wild concepts for one, maybe two of those brief levels. So World e seems perfect for its brand of "elements that wouldn't support a whole game."
So happy you're bringing this to people's attention. This was legit one of my first handheld games, and while I had the chance to play this in my ACTUAL first game - Super Mario All-Stars - I mostly played Mario 1 in that lol. That said, the e-Reader levels are a HUGE treat, especially the breadth of levels you get access to in this release! Even if you owned all the American e-Reader cards on release, you still wouldn't have gotten the value this version brings! Some people complain about the voice lines, or the cramped viewing area, but if you're on the fence and/or LOVE Mario 3, this is basically like Super Mario 3+ in my eyes.
Edit: Plus this shit (and the other 3 advance ports) came with a free port of Mario Bros. This game rocks.
I love Super Mario Bros but 3 is G.O.A.T. Sorry Super Mario World but 3 just...predates you.
@@veevendetta3448 I can't really explain why exactly I agree. 3 is just pinnacle classic Mario!
Jesus says don't trip Voltron cause then it'll be like running away from one of your exes
Wahoo just what I needed.
I remember being bummed out with how little support the E-Reader got. I bought one for $3 at a flea market in 2005. Researched how it works and slowly gathered things together. I even got a whole stack of e-reader cards for free because an employee at Microplay had no idea what it was for.
Fastforward, I learned the GBA emulators could replicate this entire process of cards and scanning. I played it and enjoyed it.
Fast forward again and I buy the entire set that the US was given. About 35 cards in total? Which sell for a high price now.
Any Japanese that happens to own all of the Japanese E-Reader card is a fucking chad, man. E-Reader was a success in Japan that games like Mario Kart Circuit, Megaman battlenetwork, Donkey Kong Country even had e-reader cards.
But info on this is so scarce.
Great video. I bought that long ago on the Wii U and dumped the rom file out of it to enjoy it on the Nintendo Switch (RetroArch). As you can see, I'm legally having fun with hacked consoles, that's totally possible.
Coincidentally just finished streaming this release at Twitch. Played the e-Reader levels for the first time, going for 100%. It was really difficult (that timer was frequently an issue), but I enjoyed it a whole lot. Glad to see this release get some coverage here. More people need to know about it!
Whats your twitch? Id like to watch it as background noise
Erika, did u managed to get all e card levels? could u send me? i tried to find all levels but that was some miising
Sure, I can link it. (If CZcams allows me to.) They took multiple streams to get through, but I got them in a playlist.
www.twitch.tv/videos/1200315088?collection=aM6L7owAsxZKhg&t=0h4m50s
And I played these on the Wii U, so all the levels were already installed. I wouldn't know where else to find them.
How long did it take to 100% the E world? I'm tempted to stream it myself now.
Hard to say. Some of the e-Reader levels are pretty difficult, especially to 100%. I died a lot. If you're playing blind, safe bet is 4-6 hours.
Aww you missed the point I'd put up there with just under the levels in terms of significance for the game the Switch Cards. These cards would make significant changes to the main game or e reader game and main game depending on the effect... Changes such as adding vegetables you can pick up in the main game, enemies turning into coins. Making sub bosses and bosses take double damage just to name some of them. Definitely was one thing I wish Nintendo had made some way to toggle those effects.
so, basically a game genie?
@@nil0bject A game genie would have a hell of a time adding vegetables to the game or adding the turn enemies into gold coins, or make Luigi play with Luigi physics in the main game with 3-5 lines of edditing.
Has anybody ever released a hack of the GBA Super Mario Advance with the voice clips taken out? They drove me frickin' insane back in the day.
From my understanding, the Wii U eShop isn't getting shut down, they're just not gonna accept direct card payments anymore (I think it's due to some new security regulations that they can't be bothered to update the shop for 😏). You'll soon have to use eShop value cards or add funds on a different device (like a computer or Switch), but you can still buy/download games in the foreseeable future.
but games can get delisted from the shop, some third party and indie games already have been.
M² never fails to go the extra yard when it comes to emulating older games.
But this isn't M2. It's a ROM Hack by Nintendo you have to pay 8 dollars for.
@@ethanhobbes3476 M² made this, as well as GBA,SNES, and DS emulators for the Nintendo Wii U. They didn't make the N64 and NES emulation, which is part of the reason they are so bad.
It’s like a dream come true! I never played the e-reader levels until I downloaded this game! I even had dreams about e-reader levels in my sleep, but they finally became reality.
WHY 👏 WASN’T 👏 I 👏 AWARE 👏 OF 👏 THESE 👏 LEVELS👏 after all the years of having this game on my gameboy advance, I never knew that they brought back the old power ups from Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros 2!!!!!!!
I had no idea it had so much extra content! I just thought it was a GBA port of SMB 3 from Super Mario All Stars. Thanks so much for this!
In Super Mario Advanced 2 once you finish star road Yoshi's color from all eggs changes depending on your power level. Small = Green, Big = Yellow, Fire = Red, Cape = Blue. It was a pretty cool addition, also Luigi's cape and Fireballs worked differently from Mario.
This is great. Worthy of a instant download and take a shot something each time you hear super in this video. Thank you, Gruz
0:20 I'll admit, seeing Firebars, SMOOTH-moving firebars at that, in SMB3 is pretty cursed lol.
Mario Maker has SMB3 fire bars. But, I’ve just opted to using winged podoboos on tracks to create roto discs instead.
Funny you mention this. I really wanted to try these levels a few weeks ago so I ahem *cough* Downloaded a Rom *cough* that contains them. I had no idea that Nintendo actually released a version with the e reader levels but unfortunately I don't have a Wii U. Sometime I don't know what Nintendo is thinking, leaving emulation the only choice to play these levels.
Not only making emulation the only choice, but then trying to shut down anyone that tries to use it
I picked this up on my Wii U a few years back.
Love this game so much.
You and like 3 other people since Wii U was Nintendo's biggest failure outside Virtual Boy.
@@pika62221 wow really?
That sucks, it's an awesome game.
It's a real shame more than 3 people didn't buy this gem of a game
Such detail, effort, and emotion in this video. Looks like you love what you do. Keep it up!
I bet they were expecting most people to plug the e-reader into the GameCube. That was the best way to do it.
Newer subscriber. Love your channel and your enthusiasm is fun and so positive! 👍 Keep up the great work.
That section where you show the voice clips on Super Mario Bros 2 gave me so many nostalgic memories of my Little brother playing that and hearing them. A lot. Thank You!
Never knew that the Wii U Re Release had these extras. Looks like a worthy purchase!
I never even heard of this and Ive been a Super Mario fan since 2012!! Now that I have a Wii U I'm gonna get it! Thanks for making this video!
You also getting easier version of Mario bros the one before they went super.
This is the first video of yours that I've ever seen and I'm instantly subscribing. It was informative, but also you have a very enthusiastic way of presenting your content and I find that so endearing.
Thanks for sharing this video. I had no idea this game existed. I had to buy a Wii U to try it out. $200 later, I'm now playing it.
copyRIGHThunder and VGMaps were my introduction to these new levels over a decade ago. Playing them for the first time in No$GBA in the late 00’s was so fascinating.
Theres a username I haven't seen in forever, at the time it was such a shock to find anyone else as obsessed with this game as I was. That said my history with Super Mario Advance 4 actually goes back to before it had a US release as at the time I had a flashable gba cart and Super Mario Advance 4 was one I had found online back in the day... good times.
Nice video! i had gotten my Wii U out a couple weeks ago to buy Metroid Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion (having just played through Dread and being hyped). After watching your video i pulled it out and bought this game as well! I’ve played smb3 countless times, but like you said this game is worth it alone for the level card levels! thanks for the awesome find!
This version is now on switch
Super Mario World is hands down my favorite Mario game, so watching the SMW-esque bonus levels really sold it for me, not that I needed to be sold anymore... Because wow, so many new levels to play 🤩 I can only hope to play on a future release on Switch or an emulator...
There's a modified gba rom that is just like this one, if you're interested
@@primosdesegundograu1204 👀 Do share, good sir
Thanks a lot for this! Now I can play a lot of "new levels" of Super Mario 3! Keep up the good work!
I was one of the few people who pick this up on release and I got to tell you those extra levels are amazing!!!
Drill Dozer (GBA) is another Wii U eShop game that might be worth purchasing as Nintendo emulated the rumble feature of the original cartridge.
Excellent video explaning everything about this game! I got it 4-5 years ago, I was enjoying virtual console games and exclusive e-reader levels and power-up functionality sounded fun. It was nice that they unlocked everything by default for this version, people who got the original version probably don't have access to any of the e-reader functions.
Wow - really cool stuff. I've never considered myself much of a Mario fan but all that added e-reader goodness really peaks my interest. Thanks for the heads up!
Dude I thought I was the only one who played this version on the Wii U and glad someone is reviewing it!!!
The Amiibo is a clear evolution of the same idea they tried with the e-Reader.
I had both the original release and the Wii U release. One thing you didn’t mention is that after the e reader was scraped. The new releases of sma4 had the level card feature removed. Also wasn’t included in the European release. The Wii U version had all the levels minus the power up and switch cards. They were cool with the press of a switch you got vegetables in regular levels, turned enemies into coins with the fire flower, and more. Also the blue boomerang was a Japan exclusive. The boomerang bros had them. Once you killed them they would drop and you could pick them up. But just like the goomba shoe. You would lose at the end of a level. Also the cape had weird mechanics since you didn’t have the spin jump. If you dive onto spinys. Mario would flash then automatically spin cape attack them. Since no spin jump was added. Also the cape could not break bricks.
Thanks for this video! Never would have discovered this if it wasn't for you! Appreciate it and had a good time with it
Nintendo loves to re-release its games here and there. It would be a treat if every re-release they do they added a few new "optional" things to their older games.
For example, whenever Switch ll is released and they repeat their Virtual Console/eShop release schedule... make the re-release worthwhile... Sure I'll play Super Mario Bros 1 2 3 World etc but add some extra stages etc for us veteran gamers.
This Mario 3 e-Reader implementation is a good idea. I always wondered why other GBA games at the time didn't get e-Reader implementation eg. Fusion, Zero mission, minish cap
Sadly, the e-Reader wasn't too popular. I myself had the e-Reader supported version of this game for my GBA SP back in the day. I didn't even know what those words ever meant until years later.
E-Reader was a bad idea. It was essentially the first microtransactions in games in the form of levels you get through cards. All the data is in the ROM of the game cartridge, so those 38 levels are locked away until you shell out the money for the E-Reader and the cards
Swinging Bars Of Doom was one of the levels originally released in the US. The others were Classic 1-1, Wild Ride in the Sky, Slidin’ the Slopes, Vegetable Volley, Doors o’ Plenty, The Ol’ Switcheroo, Musical Note Blocks, Piped Full of Plants, Para-beetle Challenge and Airship’s Revenge.
Unfortunately you can only get 49 A coins from these levels. That’s one short of the 50 required to unlock the second mushrooms house, so in the original US release you could only play the luck-based minigame in the blue mushroom house.
I forgot about your channel. I used to watch your videos while I was having panic attacks to help me calm down. I'm glad you're still posting (:
I love having all of the e reader levels. As not all of them came out in the us. When I'm playing a mario game I say the voice clips as I love them so much.
Couldn't you scan a picture of the bar code or is there something stopping you.
you can use the cards on an emulator
the dot pitch is very fine in the ereader data area and its sensitive to distortion so it's not easy to reproduce the codes.
Toad says "Oh, crap!" at 1:34
and now it is released again on the Switch, will sort of, you have to get the Nintendo Online membership with expansion pak, to have GBA games, and Super Mario Bros 3 is included, with all 38 e-Reader cards already swiped
Your channel is amazing, your narration is amazing, much love!
5:30 oh hey it's that commercial I have been looking for forever.
"The one and only Charles Martinez"
.... fans of a certain age know that the TRUE voice of Mario is Captain Lou Albano!
Thank you for making this video! I bought this game on WiiU Immediately and have been playing through all the card levels. Such a fun game!
These videos are fun to watch and fascinating. I grew up on these games and it just brings me back.
Dude thanks so much for sharing this!
I knew about the Super Mario Advanced 4 version of SMB3 and what the the E Reader had to offer with this game. (The only reason why I bought it) BUT I had no idea that Nintendo released that version in its entirety with all those bonus levels for the Wii U. Definitely gonna have to go check that out!👍🏻
Also available on the EU store with all additional levels, just bought it ! Thanks
It's best on 3DS if you're running CFW.
Hey, loved this video dude! I'll definitely have to grab this before the eshop shuts down lol
Thank you for this omg I am purchasing this 100%. Mario 3 is my favorite of the classic games and I am stoked.
Wow. Never knew about all of the extras in this. I have played this version a couple of times, and I agree that it doesn't actually seem to be a port of the All-Stars engine. It controls more like the original Mario 3. Hopefully they will put this out on Switch soon.
Honestly the e-reader levels and new artstyle turn this from a port to its own game with unique levels
Like Super Mario 64 DS
Fun fact.. the E-Reader levels are not new levels though many haven’t seen them before. Also they are in the Wii U version
Never heard of the WiiU version but this has to be one of the best official Mario games ever made
Yeah, Hope that the 2D Mario quality is still around nowdays...😅
Its Virtual console so not a new version.
@@bangerbangerbro But it's essentially the only official way to access all of World e aside from owning an e-reader and all of the relevant cards, many of which were only ever released in Japan.
I miss my eReader. I had EVERY card for EVERY game that supported it. SMB3 made the best use of it.
Would be fun to have this very port in Nintendo Switch!
For those with an actual GBA, there is a bootleg cart of this available in various places online that basically is the Wii U version rom on a GBA Cartridge.
Or you can just load the rom onto a $30 flashcart
My favorite game. Regot it on gba, learned about the cards. Got only a couple because I'm in the USA. I got lucky and got the power up card which enabled vegtables in all normal levels of mario 3 and replaying it. Just was a new experience entirely.
Congrats on 30K gruz you deserve it
Thank you for making the vid and sharing all this awesome info.
I've been a fan of 2D Mario games since the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Land. I didn't know about the card scanned extra levels you talk about That's huge news. I really enjoyed this video
I didn’t know this had the E-Reader Levels! Thanks for the info! I’ll definitely be picking this up
How did I never come across your channel before? Love your style!
Thanks for telling us about this release. I was totally unaware of it. Now I gotta buy it!
I'd like to see one more iteration built off of this release. Putting the feather and boomerang in Toad Houses, so they can be acquired in the main game like you could through the cards, and the Color Switches as part of an options menu (with some exceptions, like Single Player acting like SMA2's Mario & Luigi mode, while Two Player is identical to SMA4's, so the Luigi physics don't have to be turned on or off, and the Vegetable and Power Meter Switches being actually hidden in the worlds somewhere)
It is 12/23/21 as of this message and because of this video I purchased this version on my WiiU. It has been a welcomed addition to my gaming library, so thanks for the video!
Just subbed. I saw one of your videos a while back and forgot to sub and couldn’t find your channel until today. Great vid
This is an awesome video man. Yeah this one went under my radar but a really cool remaster.

AOOOOOOWWW
"cries"
The samples voices are the equivalent of the Star Wars remasters. Give me the original SNES sounds every time.
I wonder how many other WiiU specific VC titles have gotten such an upgrade....
picked this up on a whim a few months ago and glad I did lol those e-reader levels are no joke!!
Great video! Keep up the great work !
I so want to play this game now with all the cards. Nice Vid
Awesome video. Just found you. Dig your relaxed charisma. Subscribed.
Just to clarify, are the other features (Super Mario World cape in SMB 3) actually in the Wii U version of the game? Or are only the e-reader levels included?
Only on E-reader cards or levels.
Some of the e-reader levels include those features, so they're usable in World-E, but there's no way to use them in the original SMB3 levels.
Can you make a video or videos showing off all the E-Reader levels? I'd like to see~!
Great video. It's nice to hear people wax lyrical about games the truly love.
Well I do love 90s Nintendo and I did love Super Mario Advance series so I thought this was a great video and you got a new subscriber here!
i only just now learned that birdo had a voice in the mario advance series
Correct you mushroom level 1 to 10 was released in North America and classic 1 -1 and then PR airship revenge. Rest of levels never came out due to e reader being discontinued
Kinda funny that this was the first release on the Switch GBA port. I beat it already. I love me some smb3.
Wow.. I had no idea about this port. Thanks for info!
I Believe this applies to the Nintendo Switch Online Version too.
Pros: they toned down the voices that I felt was overdone in SMA: SMB 2
Con: some changes didn’t need to be changed. Eg “course clear you got a card” to “level cleared you got a panel”
I'm a simple man, I see someone making Wii U videos in 2021 and I subscribe.
Great video! I never knew about this game on Wii U! I’ll be buying it as soon as I get home 😊
