- The Z-42 is the newest Armory (Steel) Tier 10 German Destroyer. It has 10x 105mm guns. This video shows 1 game, played on Sleeping Giant, where I showcase myself with my thought process on what happens in the match, and give insight on what I think of the ship.

One thing to note on this ship vs Z-52, the AP pen arm threshold is 18 mm, which means you will be getting full pens on 19mm DD armor plating. Z-52 128mm has a threshold of 21mm which means lots of overpens.
This is also why im not sure if IFHE is worth it, because AP should be your go to ammo type. your HE dpm is already sad and with an angle of 27 degrees you can already fullpen cruiser ss which is 16mm. Feels like you are just robbing yourself of fire chance that might set that permafire on a bb. It does break some nice thresholds, but maybe i'd prefer SI, or DE and GtG
A nice addition for those who have too much steel and don't know what to do with it. Low on the priority list for the rest of us :-)

From my experience, it is a rather good destroyer hunter
105mm AP has a fuse set for 18mm, destroyers have 19mm, you will be dealing full penetrations with your AP alone, used in a correct way, it's a pretty good DD hunter, having short reload, it's gun caliber makes using AP against DD not only Viable, but EFFECTIVE, Hydro, etc.
Torpedoes don't stand out much, 10km range, 100s reload base, 13.7k dmg before Torp. reduction, It doesn't really have anything special with torpedoes, even Fletcher at a full Gun-boat build has better torpedoes(in my opinion)
I normally play it with another destroyer that's stealthier to mitigate its shortcomings
Overall, stick to islands, and gun down any destroyer that isn't French, capping is also a good way aswell since it has Hydro, use it for detection
Could be buffed a little, but don't want it op. Before I was an absolute no on getting this ship, but maybe changed my mind after seeing this video. I'm a fan of the short smokes so with hydro this I think I'll like the ship

This isn’t a great ship for getting massive damage games. However it absolutely DESTROYS other DDs since it’s gimmick is you get spotted, slow down and pop hydro and smoke and absolutely lay into them which is pretty much a garunteed kill or near kill which helps your team a bunch and works against everything except radar dds
the best ship to put a hydro mod on. big fan btw. also it only needs 18mm for the AP to arm, it chomps dd's

honestly it's kinda lazy that WG didn't bother to redesign the turret. I mean, the Z52 classes should be a "modern" destroyer and WG decided to just pick the turret out of Schlieffen, which is not a fully enclosed turret. I don't mind the calibre tho.

The Smoke flag is quite expensive, so I wouldn’t expect most players to have or run it every game, which is why I didn’t make use of it. Thank You

Seems kinda underwhelming, was hoping it would be a bit punchier, but oh well. I think it would be in a good spot with a 4.2s MB reload, 90s torp reload and increasing damage to be the same as Schultz/Elbing (originally, it was slower Kleber torps which was... an odd design choice). I think it's too cautiously balanced around 6km hydro and auto-captain'd by Lutjens.
Anyway, a physical comparison with Z-35 would've been what you're after, since both hulls were for Type 1936B destroyers.

When this ship was announced and they gave the initial parameters it would have been OP. But if they just removed hydro or something and essentially made it German Harugumo without the hydro it would have been fine. Instead they make a german gunboat that can't gunboat, really weird.
Still waiting for That llinois lol. Holding out for this steel one for something i like .
Thank to this ship the Harugumo is no longer the only DD with 10 guns...
Also no matter how much i look at it, it is really is a German Harugumo even the guns and torpedo layout are the same and ofc the fact that it has dual-purpose guns with small caliber just like the IJN 100 mm gun.
Theoretically the devs can make something close to Harugumo for Netherlands by adding Jacob van Heemskerk
with all the radar Gunboat DDs with heal coming into the game, its already an obsolete ship to me
You chose a strange battle. You only shot battleships. No fighting the destroyers. How does it perform in duels with other destroyers?
I didn’t choose the game, it was just the game I got when I clicked record haha, I’ve played it on stream countless times now, and talked about fighting DDs in the video, it’s not spectacular against DDs, unless they show you broadside. You have to be careful about radars especially, I mention this with importance.
Hey Malta, seen the damage report at the end. "Only" 59k with AP while 75% of damage with HE and fires isn't a bit on an issue for an "AP focussed" destroyer?
I talk about this in the video, when you shoot angled targets, you shouldn't be shooting AP, this is super obvious, and I highlight this many times in the video. Please understand. the AP on this ship does not have improved angles. So, to answer your question, no having HE damage and fire damage, is not an issue. If you want to buy a ship and spam 1 ammo type in it, have fun, but you're not going to do well, in Z-42, especially when you have to fight angled ships.

I didn't want to criticize your performance ;) but to adress that even a really good performance like your match didn't came from using the "selling point" of this ship making it questionable the ship it self, not your playstyle. Also, using IFHE, fire change get nerfed making it diffcult to get perma fire maybe limiting the damage of the ship itself compared to z52 for instance. Or you think this is not really an issue (having to use HE with nerfed fire chanche)👍?
@@riccardofontanesi1271 Like I said in the video, it's worth taking IFHE because you can pen 3 important thresholds, 27mm 30mm and 32mm, all the answers to your questions are available in the video itself, has nothing to do with criticizing performance, just answering your questions that you are presenting.

Too bad. Nerfed it waaaaay to hard... But yea. God fobidd if there was an actually good german premium that comes close to what soviet ships are regullarly released as.
I went with Bourgogne anyways, so now i'm actually relieved that i didn't wait for this pile of trash (in the context of steel ships). Maybe if it becomes available for coal i'd think about getting it.
For good German premiums, sounds like you're a new player and missed the T-61 and Z-39, but Mainz is available as a really excellent tier 8 cruiser. I enjoy Karl Schoenberg, but wouldn't call it amazing.

It’s not garbage at all, it’s one of the best DD hunters and cap contesters if not the best in the game. It’s job is to beat the living fuck out of all dds that come within its spotting range

Another DPM boat ? Still waiting on Khabe rudder to be unnerfed with all the recent entries in the DD tree making it look redundant ...
Even though the rudder on Khaba is really slow, I still enjoy playing it a lot.
@@MalteseKnight I love the Khaba, it's my most played ship. But it is harder and harder to pick against the newer entries. You cannot really multirole the ship and your utility to the team is picked by the MM (will there be enough big botes to farm?).
Play Zorkiy, it’s pretty much Khaba but without the nerfs and an added funny button

I was waiting for a good German dd as I play dds mainly! I had ready the steel for z42! But after the nerf she got for main Guns from 3.1 to 4.5 they completely destroyed her! I get Ragnar instead! ( I was ready to pas Ragnar as I already have småland)
You need too much time to get all that steel! So steel ships must be above average teck tree! Absolutely no point to get this ship!
The real question:. This or Vallejo?
If u want a long range HE spam light cruiser, go for donskoi and not Vallejo.. no utility, no pen, no torps

they tried so hard not to make this ship better than z52, since z52 is already a weak ship there is no way i am gonna waste my 27k steel on this crap
I literally wanted to cry when I saw the reload nerf on this ship. 3.8sec reload on 10x105mm is horrible. Why would WG be afraid of having to high of AP DPM for 105's that can pen maybe 25% of hits at best, and yet have abysmal HE DPM which you will be using 90% of the time. They should have made the stats near identical to Haragumo, a 5% nerf of Haragumo stats would have even been acceptable, but 3.8sec reload is rough. No doubt you will hit some nice broadsides once in awhile, but it won't be anything consistent.
I was hoping for DPM focused German 105mm gun boat, and a Russian 100mm gun boat, but then WG gave us this ☹️

If your shoot as much HE as seen in the video you are doing it wrong.

Pretty sure you don’t want to spec into IFHE.
The AP damage is so much higher than the HE damage to begin with and then AP arms on 18mm.
So you really want to be shooting AP (even at superstructure) whenever possible and the HE should only be used against angled DDs or when you really need a fire.
And in both those cases IFHE doesn’t help or is even detrimental.
Running IFHE doesn’t make your AP worse, it just helps you in situations where you won’t get a lot of damage with AP, and yes, on angled targets you won’t get massive damage with AP. I explain this all in the video.
Something additional which I mention about IFHE in the video is the fact that you go through 3 armour treshholds which are common at T10, 27mm, 30mm and 32mm.
So for example when you’re fighting a bow in Des Moines instead of having to aim for super structure and potentially hitting his guns missing out on a big portion of damage, you can aim for his nose and get damage like that and potentially even get a fire to improve damage. That’s just an example.
Also in terms of what you could take instead of IFHE, maybe SI, but I don’t think it’s necessary, from personal experience.
My build isn’t something everyone must run, but it’s what I choose to run after trying the ship out and seeing it’s strengths and weaknesses. But anyone can feel free to run what they choose. :D

REgarding ASW mention at the 20:00 mark:
Kinda ridiculous how, MORE THAN 50% of the TIME, it is EXTREMELY difficult to shift binocular bearings without disruption of guns, find the temporary and ephemeral bubbles of detection which are in fact no where near the sub, ATTEMPT to hit an unlocated ship that is moving in an UNKNOW BEARING with an airstrike reticle that has been nerfed four times and this with a payload that has been nerfed twice.
How many finger manipulations does WG figure it must take for an outcome that is not only uncertain and greatly distractive, but is also NOT going to dev strike the submarine?
Oh and why fire your 16+ inch shells at a sub that is fully detected? It DOES NOT DEVSTRIKE THEM because they have more hull saturation than a Kleber, add to this ridiculous set of circumstances that : they can dive in less than a heart beat, and their torpedoes are surely entirely shotgunned at you.
If as has been said by evasive representatives of WG it really easy easy to dodge torps with "a simple manoeuvre", then the game designers at WG must have said to themselves that BBS require all this " simplicity" that perceptual overload and lack of clarity and lack of effect that we can throw at them. But of course, we at WG must make sure that CV players are not treated in the same manner when confronted with submarines.
This thing is a BEAST in competitive. It’s the best cap contender and denier in the game that rapes anything that doesn’t have radar and takes out dds for your team like no other. You get detected at 6.2, slow down and pop smoke and hydro and they are most likely starting to turn out and with the 18mm fusing AP your just SHRED them and either kill then or bring ‘em so low they can’t do much anymore
