Today, we are in Samsun's Ondokuz Mayıs district in our Central Black Sea series.

19 Mayıs is on the Samsun-Sinop highway route and 33 km west of Samsun city centre. The population of the district is 26 thousand. Its area is 363 km².
The land of the district forms the eastern end of the Bafra Plain. It is located between the Black Sea and the low hill of the Canik Mountains. There is the center of Samsun in the east, the town of Bafra in the west, and the Black Sea in the north. The typical Black Sea climate is observed.
After 1878, immigrants from Dagestan and the North Caucasus were settled by the state. In addition, Albanian immigrants from Kosovo after the Balkan War of 1912 were settled in the district and the current population structure was formed.
The history of the municipality began by taking the name Engiz, but on the grounds that the name Engiz was not Turkish, it was changed in 1961 and its new name was "Ballıca". In 1988, it was named Ondokuz Mayıs with the decision of the city council.
With Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's stepping into Samsun, the first action of the National Struggle movement started here, and effective struggles were fought in Dağköy, which is within the borders of the district today. A heroine known as "Fatma Sergeant" also emerged in this resistance. Fatma Sergeant died in 1963 and her grave is in Dağköy neighborhood.
Ondokuz Mayıs district has an important touristic potential. Balıklı Lakes and a part of Kızılırmak Delta within the boundaries of the district have an important place in terms of tourism. 305 bird species live here.
With its 22 km coastline, clean sandy beach, sea and sun, Ondokuz Mayıs is capable of responding significantly to summer tourism. During the summer months in the district, it increases 3-4 times of the normal population, and many summer residents spend their holidays here. In addition, tent tourism is also developing.
The green Canik Mountains begin in the south of the town. Between Ondokuz Mayıs district center and the Black Sea is the Kızılırmak Delta, which is covered with vast reeds, marshes and lakes.
Various festivals and events are organized by the Ondokuz Mayıs municipality in the summer months and attract great attention.
The historical bath in the town of Yörükler is one of the important works reflecting the history of the region.
The only civil aviation school of the Black Sea Region operates in the district of Ondokuz Mayıs, and an aviation fair has been held in August every year since 1998. Small planes can land at the airport in the district.
Despite all its potential, the touristic facilities on the coastline are very inadequate.
