Today, in the 14th episode of our Central Black Sea series, we are in Yakakent, the last district of Samsun in this series.

Yakakent is the last district of Samsun on the west coast. Its distance from the city center is 83 km. It is adjacent to Alaçam in the east, Sinop in the west, and Durağan in the south. To the north is the Black Sea. Its area is 204 km² and its population is about 10 thousand. Since Yakakent is on the Samsun Sinop Highway, there is a heavy transportation traffic.
It has carried three names in its history: Kominos, Gümenez and finally Yakakent. Since adequate research could not be carried out in the district, no traces of settlement were found except for the tumulus known as Pilavtepe.
In the 1500s, Eastern Rome ruled in Yakakent. The name of the city was "Kominos" at that time. Kominos means 'headless bishop' in Greek. It is said that the Ottoman Sultan Yavuz Sultan Selim, who went on a campaign for the Battle of Çaldıran, which took place in 1514 and was one of the greatest pitched battles in history, destroyed Kominos after the people of Kominos did not recognize the Ottoman Empire. After Kominos was captured by the Ottomans, its name was changed to Gümenez. With the establishment of the municipal organization in 1963, its name was changed to Yakakent.
When you reach the center of Yakakent, we come across the square where the Atatürk statue with its back turned to the sea is located. On the right side of the area, there is the municipality building, and on the left side, there are 5-storey buildings with shops under them. The only reminder of the past here is the 2-storey wooden building just opposite the statue. There are six coffee houses now. It is a road closed to traffic and very convenient for strolling by the sea.
Yakakent has a sparkling clear sea with its 14 km beach embracing the Black Sea. Yakakent is Samsun's largest window to the Black Sea. With this feature, Samsun is a candidate to be a center of attraction in terms of tourism. The private sector has also started to invest. Kumluk Beach is one of the first. If your holiday preference is the sea and peace, you are at the right address. You can swim in a comfortable and pleasant environment, take long nature walks, eat delicious fish and relieve the tiredness of the day with the magnificent sunset.
The activity on the coastline in the evening and during the night will also appeal to you. Rows of tea gardens and cafes. In addition, the tea gardens and live music bars on the beach during the summer season offer an alternative for those who want to experience the nightlife to the fullest.
Yakakent has Turkey's largest fishing port. Only 6 large 25-meter fishing boats can board inside the breakwater. But this is such a friendly place. There are wooden boathouses and boatyards, one by one or leaning against each other, in the half-moon shaped cove by the sea. There are also three fish restaurants on the beach. Six boathouses, a restaurant above. If you're going to eat here, definitely try the turbot fish, you won't be able to get enough of it.
If you are tired of the heat, besides sea tourism, highland tourism attracts a lot of attention in recent years. Those who want to have a nature walk and picnic away from the sweltering heat of summer go to Uzunkız, Elikbuyran and Necati Batı plateaus. A different experience, you will enjoy.
Family hostel management has developed in Yakakent. In addition to hostels, municipal hotels and restaurants; There is also a municipal motel right next to it. Teachers' House serves both teachers who want to stay here and other holidaymakers. Another accommodation alternative is the motels and pensions in the position of a holiday village at the entrance of the Çam Lake promenade.
The economy of the district is based on agriculture, animal husbandry and fishing. The villages are forest villages and a significant part of the agricultural lands consists of unqualified and unproductive 4th class lands. Desired yield cannot be obtained from the unit area, as the unqualified soils and their division into small pieces by inheritance make mechanized agriculture difficult. The businesses are in the form of small family businesses, and production is generally made for the needs of the family, and a small part of it is sold in the market established in the district.
In addition to the variety of fishery products, factories were established to process fish meal and oil, sand mussels, sharks, stingrays and snails, which were established by the private sector for the purpose of processing anchovy as a result of plentiful hunting of anchovy in anchovy season.
