- How To GRID a REALISTIC PORTRAIT DRAWING!
In this tutorial i show you how to grid a portrait before you start working into it. It is very useful to get the proportions accurate before then working into it further. This is going to be the start of a HYPERREALISTIC drawing guide. - Jak na to + styl
i never got chance to go any art class but now i got a teacher.. thank u dan.
manisha c thanks!
Me too
@@DanBeardshaw u are our teacher even I could not take art classes
I learned this in art class and it was super fun and easy and now I'm just trying to get a recap.
@@loutenant2817same lol
I've actually learnt more about artistic techniques from your videos than I ever did at my school and college years. Well done.
TheAutistWhisperer me too!!
Wow
you really went to college for art?
Lol what's the purpose of the tuition fee then?
That’s a little sad tho
I often get asked why I hand knit socks when I can buy machine made mass produced socks from the store. Well, hand knit socks are made to fit me perfectly or any of my recipients. Hand dyed yarn (not dyed by me) gives it a uniqueness and a lot of love goes into every stitch. My husband and son love the socks I make them. That’s my parallel to your hyper realistic drawing vs photograph 😎
In all fairness, there's much more value to your handmade socks than an exact copy drawing. In my opinion.
It’s like when people say why send a letter when you can just email 📧.. nothing better than a hand written letter and nothing better than a hand done drawing ✍️.. it means something!! That’s why I don’t like computer drawings!!
Really enjoyed your video! Grids are also a great way to be able to increase the size of your drawing and keep the proportions. Make a one inch grid on your drawing but then if you want the final drawing or painting to be twice the size, draw 2 inch grid squares on your canvas or paper, then just draw whats in the square from your original drawing. I think the grid method makes the task of drawing a portrait seam manageable because you are just drawing whats in the square, until square by square you've finished your drawing.
So helpful! I didn't think about this and the reference was extra long.
A trick I was taught when I learned this method was to used a second sheet of paper or a note card and cut a square the same size as your grid in it. Then use the notecard to cover your image you are copying from. it allows you to remove everything around the box you are working on. Really helpful when shading
I've done several grid drawings in the past I'm quite proud of. I got to the point where free hand sketching portraits came very naturally to me and I could accurately eyeball it. But years of working full time jobs and having my drawing time significantly decrease has put my portrait skills in serious disrepair. Thanks for your video to remind me on how to go back to basics! Gonna start one today!
I was actually waiting for something to draw using a grid and you posted this video.
It was perfect so thank you
photo realism, hyper realism, why? do believe that question has been around since the camera. short answer, we are artists, not photographers. to say nothing of testing our skills, honing them, and giving them "birth". agree with you, griding, is a good way to get started. know some guys that use it all the time.
I learned this in middle school by a great teacher and one thing I learned doing this is that I made my lines a bit blocky from the image I was trying to draw. I had to go back and redo some by making smoother connecting lines and make it look more organic. The grid I used was a little bigger because it was a bigger image but if I were to redo that image, I would use a 1 inch x 1 inch grid like this one. You did well in showing off how to do this. I'm learning a lot here.
great stuff my Grandad taught me this technique when i was 8 and like previous comments below you have a great understanding not only in an academic aspect but a teaching manor TY 😊 RESPECT!
After watching the video, im so hyped to draw in a portrait style, thanks man for the help!
Bro you Are like a Human Printer

This really helps since I'm working on an architecture project, thanks ❤️😊
Gamer31504 did u draw a x picture ?
"Say my name" Just finished binge watching Breaking Bad, great series, kept wondering what's gonna happen next, anyways, your tuts are great yo.
Such an enjoyment to follow your videos - and I think there are qualities from a hyperrealistic drawing that goes beyond that it could be regarded as just a reproduction of a photo that already exists - because surface, texture and the total feeling of the drawing is different from a photo and the process of re-creating is also very different because drawing is very tactile - you can feel every little form of the image -
Thank you. Your tips were good. I enjoyed observing you make your grid.
Grid method is actually amazing! It helps me a lot!
Oi jotaro
You're so beautiful your videos are helpful and your drawings are AMAZING . hope that one day ill be good as u at drawing.
ty i learnt more here in first few mins than i do a double lesson in art in school ty
I recommend using t square, it can make your grid lines more accurate and fast
thanks so much. I am very good at free hand drawing but wasn't sure how to do graphing very well thanks
when I was a kid word search type books always had grid drawing games. it helped with freehand
You're great! I hope I get that good one day!
I love how you say "attempt to draw" but you're so good xD gj keep it up bro :)
Thank you for this, sir.
Bro I am your big fan,I love your sketches.🙋
Awesome Video! It inspires me to draw😁
Dan I paint a portrait starting with a grid for many years. Grid is a great way to start a portrait.
Nice one bro,I've been waiting for you to post a video on grids, thanks😊😊
Yay you don't even know man I literally wait for you to post a video :P
issrabi same dude 🙋
You are just so damned skilled!!!
Thanks for sharing dear friend bless you.
thank you so much bro this is a really big help❤️🙏
I've completed my grid then taped it the window (or light box)
to lightly trace the outline with graphite. Eliminates any erasing of grid lines. I also might decrease the scale of detailed parts like eyes, noses, mouths etc. If your scale for the drawing is one inch you might decrease it to a half inch for added accurate detail in smaller areas. Fun stuff.
Awesome video
Awesome videos bro. Appreciate them very much 👍👍✍
You are a great teacher..
Looking forward to watching your progress in this series. It might be shameful but I often trace over the photo in photoshop on a separate layer (just the main elements) Then I put a grid on another layer and then print just the grid and line drawing at the scale I am doing my drawing. I then transfer the grid and the line drawing to my paper. In photoshop I then turn the image back on with the grid over the top and then refer to this when I am drawing using the grid and the line drawing for positioning the fine details. I know its cheating but who cares, as you say enjoy the process. 👍
Den u r a great artist
Awesome job
i love ur drawings
Awesome video thank you very much
keep it up bro nice kind of art
Dan, good review. I learned about using a light pencil, yellow, on dark backgrounds, but before did it with 4B. Your proposed schedule of various drawings seems great. Keep up the good work. We are all feeling really lucky to have found you. Your new intro was a bit fast for an old man like me, maybe a second instead of a mili-second would be better. I would like to know where you live and work-country, region. You inspire!
Glenn Guillory Thanks Glenn
i think that this is the best and most in depth drawing guide so far and the grid method is really great. thanks again Danny!
Treetheoryexbl642 thanks man:)
Nice man!
Words that show their meaning, this would be a fun video idea. Doing that project in Computer art, my word is chaos. 😂
this is really good :)
Hi just a thought if you use the grid method a lot you might find buying a quilters acrylic ruler it makes drawing the grid really easy as you can see through it.
Thank you Dan😉
Here mate, you are truly amazing at art, im guessing ur from the northeast of england same as me, i've also liked and subbed, i also am an artist but not as good as you mate, keep up the good work, you are an inspiration ,
Thanks Dave, really appreciate that. keep up the drawing mate
bro you are of great help!! thanks for your efforts 🤘🤘🤘
PARAS R no worries, thank you
Dan Beardshaw 😀😀
Did anyone else do a class project in 2nd or 3rd grade where everyone got their own square and put together it was a picture? Idk that’s what this reminded me of. Just me?
I use grids from time to time. After a while they get so tedious to make, though.
Chris C. Yeah they do, now and then they are helpful and worth it though.
I find that doing grids is easy since the actually drawings take hours on end, so the grid seems like the quickest step.
what do i do when the refernce paper and the paper I'm going to draw on is not the same size
Gridding is cheating, and does not help a artists skills. Like a athlete taking drugs to enhance their performance.
@@davidbull9681 not true at all, i can free hand but i started using grids its a great way to work quicker and more accurately . its like a athlete practicing til perfection, think of it like training wheels on a bike. also, many professional artist use/used grids before in their works, why are you on a grid video anyway if its cheating to you?
Just wanna say thank you Dan
Awesome video!! Oh gosh what artist hasn’t been hours into a drawing and had to trash it 😩?!? Painful lessons on just how important the initial sketch is!!!
Think I have decided to be one of ur followers bro
Thank you thank you thank you 😭🙏🙏
i loved how you draw gridding thank you! but how if i gonna make into big canvas? i just can't figure out
Nice video.
Ori go thanks
Tysm!❤👊
Thanks 🙏🏽.
Do you have a program or website where you get your high resolution pictures from? They alway have so much detail!
Thank u sooooo much
Thank you.
Hey Dan! Big fan of yours.
Sanjeet Bante I appreciate that thanks!
Love breaking bad 505 homies were u at?👀🤚
Are you sketching in the H pencil too, not just the grid? Cheers. Love the vids x
Great video and no wasting time faffing, thanku.
Johny deep is that youuuuu!!
How do you use the grid method if you want to draw the picture bigger than the photograph?
It's like sketching a puzzle !
100k let's goooo!!!!
It's Nicole 🎉🎉🎉
Quick question can you show us how to size the reference image to the full length of an a4 page and print it successfully (preferably on Microsoft word)
Hi dan im your big fan ! Nice vids!
Mr. MeltingDown thanks!
Thanx:3 please donsider on doing how to draw hair !
I'm trying to get good like this
Hey can we use this method to draw animals and nice video it helped me alot
I’ve used the grid method when I first began doing art but as I continued to draw I began to imagine a grid however I noticed a dip in my creativity and my proportions were becoming off whenever I’d draw from reference or a live model
cool
grid guiding is a key element
Him: Attempt to draw a Hyper Realism
Me: ...
Really great video! How do I make a grid proportional if I want to make the drawing big though?
Instead of 1 inch squares you make 2 inch squares...bingo your drawing is now 4x bigger.
Waiting for this potrait to be finished
How Do you make the image the same size as the paper or the same dimensions
😍😍
How to skin
If you can barely see details in some areas?
Im getting slopy and old looking even after smudge trying to guess what i see sometimes
How to fix this?
this method that i use too
Are those tears in my eyes love you
I never used grids or anything with drawing, i do everything free hand but just for the fun of it i wanna try out grid to see will it confuse or help me
I don't have a printer for the images. Is there an electronic way of doing the grids and then keeping the image on a laptop?
brba💚
What if I want to do it in a A3? How do I do the calculation?
This method is by far the best for any drawing, its precise. The way i number the graph is on top i write 1-18 or however many squares you have and on the side i write a-q or however many squares you have to work with and youll never get confused. X axis numeral, y axis alphabetical
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
new sub here
Can you drop the link of video on how the reference is digitally gridded?
Yo, computers really are listening. I was talking about breaking bad and just finished watching it and now breaking bad stuff is everywhere
