  • How To GRID a REALISTIC PORTRAIT DRAWING!
In this tutorial i show you how to grid a portrait before you start working into it. It is very useful to get the proportions accurate before then working into it further. This is going to be the start of a HYPERREALISTIC drawing guide.

I often get asked why I hand knit socks when I can buy machine made mass produced socks from the store. Well, hand knit socks are made to fit me perfectly or any of my recipients. Hand dyed yarn (not dyed by me) gives it a uniqueness and a lot of love goes into every stitch. My husband and son love the socks I make them. That’s my parallel to your hyper realistic drawing vs photograph 😎

In all fairness, there's much more value to your handmade socks than an exact copy drawing. In my opinion.

It’s like when people say why send a letter when you can just email 📧.. nothing better than a hand written letter and nothing better than a hand done drawing ✍️.. it means something!! That’s why I don’t like computer drawings!!

Really enjoyed your video! Grids are also a great way to be able to increase the size of your drawing and keep the proportions. Make a one inch grid on your drawing but then if you want the final drawing or painting to be twice the size, draw 2 inch grid squares on your canvas or paper, then just draw whats in the square from your original drawing. I think the grid method makes the task of drawing a portrait seam manageable because you are just drawing whats in the square, until square by square you've finished your drawing.

A trick I was taught when I learned this method was to used a second sheet of paper or a note card and cut a square the same size as your grid in it. Then use the notecard to cover your image you are copying from. it allows you to remove everything around the box you are working on. Really helpful when shading

I've done several grid drawings in the past I'm quite proud of. I got to the point where free hand sketching portraits came very naturally to me and I could accurately eyeball it. But years of working full time jobs and having my drawing time significantly decrease has put my portrait skills in serious disrepair. Thanks for your video to remind me on how to go back to basics! Gonna start one today!

photo realism, hyper realism, why? do believe that question has been around since the camera. short answer, we are artists, not photographers. to say nothing of testing our skills, honing them, and giving them "birth". agree with you, griding, is a good way to get started. know some guys that use it all the time.

  • @obieldenook1142

I learned this in middle school by a great teacher and one thing I learned doing this is that I made my lines a bit blocky from the image I was trying to draw. I had to go back and redo some by making smoother connecting lines and make it look more organic. The grid I used was a little bigger because it was a bigger image but if I were to redo that image, I would use a 1 inch x 1 inch grid like this one. You did well in showing off how to do this. I'm learning a lot here.

Such an enjoyment to follow your videos - and I think there are qualities from a hyperrealistic drawing that goes beyond that it could be regarded as just a reproduction of a photo that already exists - because surface, texture and the total feeling of the drawing is different from a photo and the process of re-creating is also very different because drawing is very tactile - you can feel every little form of the image -

I've completed my grid then taped it the window (or light box)
to lightly trace the outline with graphite. Eliminates any erasing of grid lines. I also might decrease the scale of detailed parts like eyes, noses, mouths etc. If your scale for the drawing is one inch you might decrease it to a half inch for added accurate detail in smaller areas. Fun stuff.

Looking forward to watching your progress in this series. It might be shameful but I often trace over the photo in photoshop on a separate layer (just the main elements) Then I put a grid on another layer and then print just the grid and line drawing at the scale I am doing my drawing. I then transfer the grid and the line drawing to my paper. In photoshop I then turn the image back on with the grid over the top and then refer to this when I am drawing using the grid and the line drawing for positioning the fine details. I know its cheating but who cares, as you say enjoy the process. 👍
