    Damn, spent a few days testing these exact things and found the same results. Wished I had come across this sooner!

    if it's somewhere where using that much smell isn't doable, a good bonding primer will do the same thing without that "oil based" type smell. I'm very partial to the one made by Valspar

    What kind of roller are you using after you’re spraying the primer? What grit sandpaper? Do you just blow or wipe the sanding off?

    Do you Sand it first and then shellac primer?

    • @lava_oreo
      @lava_oreo Před 11 měsíci

      My guess is no sanding first. With sanding I think you don't have to be so strict about having a primer.

    • @asiburger
      @asiburger Před 10 měsíci +1

      I'd sand it lightly, for better adherence in any case.

    • @swirle13
      @swirle13 Před 3 měsíci +1

      I had tried lightly sanding with 220 grit and my shellac primer was able to come off when peeling up my painters tape. It clung better to more scuffed areas on the test section, so I'd say yes. 220 grit was a little too fine for my Ikea Kallax laminate, so I did 180 and it has seemed to be the right amount of scuffing without too much gauging.

      @@the.hoss.homestead Yes! I need to paint my daughters vanity and its the same material my kallax shelf from ikea is and I had no idea where to start. This was so helpful.

    What would you suggest for sinply protecting the original surface cheaply?
    I just got a black Kullen drawer delivered and it came with scratches so I want to protect it.

  • @asiburger
    @asiburger Před 10 měsíci +1

    I want a nice, mossy, calm green on my doors, but IKEA is charging 4 times the rate of a regular door, for a different colour.
    This is what I'll go with and safe about 3/5 of the price. 😅

    • @doeeyes2
      @doeeyes2 Před 7 měsíci +1

      Just beware the primer alone is 30 bucks... not including the paint, brushes and other tools and top coat. It adds up.

  • @freedom_aint_free

    If you are going to withstand the freaking strong odor of shellac primers, why not go full on industrial coating and use a car painting (primer + base coat + clear coat) instead ?
    There are epoxy primers that smell less than this thing and are way tougher to scratch, another option would be places that sell those filled in premises spray cans usually have promotions with some colors for certain brands or you can buy it in white and color yourself, you can spray them with a cheap HVLP sprayer and they will outlast the furniture.

    • @doeeyes2
      @doeeyes2 Před 7 měsíci +2

      The spray isnt as bad as the can. I do it outside or in a ventilated space like garage anyways.

      It ain’t that deep..if it’s the smell that concerns you instead of results then your like the “no primer” but in person. She did good & chill out

    What’s the best primer to use for weatherproof?

    • @Kath-Erina
      @Kath-Erina Před 15 dny

      The problem with Ikea furniture itself (like the Kallax or other laminate furniture) is that it's absolutely not weather proof. No matter the primer, color or top coat you will use... The thing is the material that's it's made of is like a pressed sponge. If it gets in contact with water (rain, puddles, anything) it WILL soak up that water and expand, making the laminate bubble, peel, break, gives you uneven textures, soft edges that crumble away in a few months... It's not a good idea

  • @doeeyes2
    @doeeyes2 Před 7 měsíci +1

    That primer is 30 bucks... plus the paint and then the top coat and rollers etc... it gets real expensive to paint cheap furniture
