    Good afternoon Dennis. I will give all the detail. I'm running into a dead end and I'm unable to find resolution to a electrical wiring job. I installed an attic vent fan and the only power in the attic was a line from a switch to a light fixture. There was no ground for the light or in the plastic junction box. I replaced the junction box to one that has a ground. I ran the 14/2 from the fan to the junction box. (I used red Cap's and as extra safety I wrapped the end of each and wires with electrical tape) Connected all ground with a pigtail and connected pigtail to ground screw.
    Connected all white/neutral wires and added a pigtail for the light.
    Connected all black/live wires and a pigtail for the light.
    I replaced the light fixture with one that uses a pull chain for on and off.
    Connected the neutral pigtail to the silver screw and connected the live wire to the brass screw.
    Turned on the circuit for the attic.
    The fan works perfectly, but the light will not work.
    Testing I did/tried:
    I tried a new light bulb still didn't work. I tried using the original light fixture, didn't work.
    I made new pigtails for white and black wires and cut off a little extra casing for each wire, to make sure there is contact.
    Still not working.
    Do you have any thoughts on possible issue?

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  Před 3 lety

      Is the feed to the light coming from the switch only, or is there a feed into the light fixture box with the original hot leg running to the switch and back?

    • @yankeeownz9980
      @yankeeownz9980 Před 3 lety +1

      @@dwcoffey the feed goes to the light switch. Then a line is run from the switch to the light.

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  Před 3 lety

      Sorry to rehash, just trying to make sure I completely understand....
      The hot line comes into the light fixture box from the switch. Now the new 14/2 line runs from the fan to the light fixture box. Inside the light fixture box, you have tied together the white/neutral from the fan, the switch and the pigtail to the light fixture. Also tied together in that box are the black/hot from the fan, the switch and the black pigtail to the light fixture. Then the hot and neutral pigtaisl are connected to the light fixture. So the switch should be giving you power to both the fan and the light. You've tried 2 light fixtures and bulbs, so the problem is not likely to be the fixture or the bulb. If you have a volt meter, you could carefully check across the fixture terminals while the circuit is hot to be absolutely sure. If not, I think we can rule that out. So....since the fan is working, the only thing left is the pigtails for the light. Sounds like maybe one of the pigtail wires is not making contact where the 3 wires are tied together...either the hot or the neutral.

    • @yankeeownz9980
      @yankeeownz9980 Před 3 lety +1

      @@dwcoffey no need to go crazy over it Dennis haha
      I found out what I needed to do. I had to use 2 black/live pigtails from the cap and connect both to the screws on the light. This feeds constant power to the attic fan and light without having to turn off the light switch.

    Great job on your clear step by step instructions. Would you have info on how to bypass the sensor and keep the light on constant when we are hanging around outside

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for watching, Aaron! The first of these lights I bought came with a little cap that fits over the light sensor, so that one was easy....put the cap on the sensor and the light thinks it is dark all the time, so can be switched on and off at will. The subsequent lights I bought did not come with these caps, so, I've tried two ways and both work. On one, I took a bit of black paint and covered the light sensor lens. On the other, I covered the sensor with black electrical tape and trimmed it off to look nice. I suspect the paint will last longer outside, but both methods are working so far. I haven't tried this, but it might be worth a try....take a small lid from something, paint it to match your light (mine are white) and then stick it down over the light sensor with a bit of silicone....maybe paint the inside of the cap black to block all light.
      If you are having issues with a motion detector, I don't have any suggestions for that...these lights of mine are not equipped with motion detectors.

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  Před 9 měsíci

      Thank you for watching, Jose! Mine was a sealed unit as the back was completely enclosed, so it could be mounted with no sealing at all other than a gasket to protect the wiring in the box. You could also caulk around the base. I suppose the best method would depend on your siding and how the box is mounted. I'd use whichever method would give the best seal.

    I installed an older motion dual spotlight to the side of my shop ( after it was replaced with a newer on on the house), and I connected an extension cord wired to the light and the other end plugged into an outlet inside the shop. I then wanted to set my light to stay on by switching it off and back on, and installed a light switch inline interrupting the HOT or BLACK wire to the switch. I can shut off the light, but, when I switch off, then on, it goes back into normal mode and does not stay on. I figured the black wire was the one to use to interrupt. Maybe it's the white wire then. I'm pretty sure the light system works once I figure this out. Ideas?

      Thanks for watching! Some motion sensing lights toggle the sensor when you switch them on/off. So on/off once puts it in motion sensing mode, then on/off again takes it out of motion sensing mode. Some lights work this way.

    Great video, thank you. Do the side lights rotate 180 degrees from the main light? I know left to right it only rotates 90 degrees from the main light, but is it possible to rotate it down 180 degrees so one of the three lights is pointing the opposite direction from the other two?

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for watching, Chris! No, they only rotate about 90 degrees either way in both directions. You can get the side lights to point about straight up or straight down, but that's as far as they go.

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for watching, Gary! You'd have to be real careful not to break the plastic housing. I'd probably mark my hole placement by holding the fixture in place and using a nail in each hole to make a mark, then move the light out of the way, use your nail to create a pilot hole for the screws, then drive the screws by hand with a screwdriver.

    did you have to predrill holes in the vinyl box for the mounting plate? I am in the midst of siding my house and am replacing the light fixture. There is not electrical box just a thin plate that was screwed to the masonite siding. I am adding the vinyl box for the siding just not sure how to secure the mounting plate for the new light

    It’s a fixture like you have without motion sensor and only two lamps on a single switch I wired it up lastnight but it won’t work when the switch leg is taped to hot so I caped the switch leg but need it on a switch

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  Před 3 lety

      I'm not sure I understand, and it is very difficult to describe wiring through messages, but....if you only have one feed into a 2-way switch and 2 fixtures on that switch, your whites should go to the silver side of the switch and your blacks should go to the brass side of the switch....this includes your feed and your fixtures.

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for watching, Erik! At night, yes. If the switch is off, no light at all. If the switch is on and it is dark enough outside, the light will come on. If you leave the light switch on, the duck to dawn sensor will turn the light off and on via the sensor. With the sensor enabled, you can't turn the light on via the switch unless it is past dusk.

      Thanks for watching, Warren! There's a photo-eye on top of the light that senses day/night. If it is getting any light, that may be making the light turn off. I covered mine with a piece of black electrical tape and then the cap that came with the light.

      Hi Oscar, thank you for watching! If there is not a ground wire in your wiring, but you have metal a metal junction box, you can attach the green wire from the light to a screw in the junction box. If your box is plastic, you can just skip connecting the green ground wire.

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for watching, Josh! Hard to say, because it depends on how the fixture is wired. If it is a single fixture, single 2-way switch....typically you will switch both the neutral and hot. If it is a 3-way switch, you may just switch the hot leg.
