    Great video really appreciate your time and effort to make it!! Another game i'm really enjoying atm is Manor Lords. Almost exactly the same as Banished ( which I love to death) but also includes real time battle which has a very similar army unit control and feel as a total war battle. It's still in development atm, and it was created by the solo developer Greg Styczeń of Slavic Magic. It's still not finished and has limited tech development atm but still very playable as it is. Highly recommend!!

      I love the vibe and the setting of Ancient Cities too. More immersive than Dawn of Man... But the game is still in Early Access and really lacks content, details, and deep gameplay right now. Like if they could add more crafting tools, buildings, animals, predators, trading, fighting, wars...just like how life from Stone Age was...That would be one hell of a game.

    • @Magnum0peth
      @Magnum0peth Před rokem +1

      No other game out there can generate great stories like Rimworld. Most games are just bland reconstruct-after-disaster loops trying to survive whatever the game throws at you.
      If you've played Rimworld you know there's really nothing comparable to it (aside from it's Dwarf Fortress inspiration ofc), you feel connected to your pawns and it makes you care for them, THEY are the driving force.
      Rimworld is just on another level, often ignored due to its 2D graphics. A pity because it's so far ahead of everything else. 9 years after and still going strong, the amount of depth on this game is unbelievable, the base game alone will give you hundreds of hours of enjoyment, not even going to mention mods.
      Other ones of note, Stranded Alien Dawn feels half-baked style over substance, Clanfolk is a okay-ish no-combat derivative, Going Medieval has a very good foundation and the potential to be awesome, Norfolk I'll be keeping a close look on because it's looks really promising.

    • @perafilozof

      Hi, welcome to my channel and thank you kindly for sharing your view on all these games. Especially for the Rimworld praise. I do agree totally with all your points and I hope they one day do the same upgrade like Dwarf Fortress developers and open up a whole new market of players which couldn't get pass the graphics. This one one of the reasons Indie games have so much potential because they are free to try things out and find amazing gameplay combinations. What are you playing now?

  • @sztypettto

    After watching the list of games here, it leaves me with a feeling to revisit categorisation. I felt that Banished-like, Frost-Punk like, Rimworld-Like, Factorio-like, Anno-like, Tropico-like, Simcity-like etc need to be evaluated. I'm going to use Steam's labels as a reference because Steam is an ubiquitous platform. According to Steam, most of these games are listed with one or more labels: Colony-Sim, Survival, City-Building, Business Management etc.
    Naturally many of the games we play today and will be playing have branched out or inspired from popular games we know: Sims, Simcity, City Skylines, Anno, Tropico, and Settlers. These were games released during the 2000s. By the 2010s the release of Minecraft was a total game changer. It was a Sims like game with city building elements.
    Then came along Banished, which expanded city building with a bit of Sims like elements, closely resembling Minecraft. This spawned many Banished like games. Then came along Factorio and Rimworld.
    I would call Factorio as inspired by Minecraft or a Minecraft derivative because it is just like Minecraft without additional players. Even as multiplayer has been added recently in Factorio, playing Singleplayer is the meta. On the otherhand Rimworld is very much a hybridisation of Banished and Minecraft. And so spawned Rimworld like games.
    Then we saw the arrival of Frostpunk, which is very much like Banished, and nothing like Minecraft, Factorio, Sims, Simcity/City Skylines or Rimworld. And so started the trend of Frostpunk like games.
    It kind of becomes challenging to define what makes a game Banished like versus Frostpunk like, Rimworld like, Anno like, Tropico like as games continue to hybridise features.

    • @perafilozof
      @perafilozof  Před rokem +1

      Ah very good topic to start SZ Typetto! Good of you to notice and voice this! I had a similar conversation about what separates RTS and RTT games and even some real time 4X games.
      It comes down to gameplay features and the way time and resources are designed. It's true that since let's say 2000 games have become more and more a mixing pot of features and elements.
      The way you play can for example be very different: Satisfactory vs Factorio, and yet both games are practically the same. You build a base one section at a time and connect it all to make products. Only the way is different one is top down the other first person.
      This kid of game development is definitely braking down genre boundaries and I honestly consider that one of the greatest advancements in game development since 3D.
      I actually have a video on my to do list which will target this topic.

    Foundation reminds me a lot of an old lesser known, but rather good game called Medieval Lords: Build Defend Expand. It also had some object manipulation features and allowed for some really nice looking medieval village building. Kind of want to play it again after looking at some screenshots.
    It did have a few quirks getting it to run even on Win7 iirc, but installing wasn't too difficult. I don't think it's available on any game clients, so physical media might be the only way to go.
    Great list! Nothing compares to Banished though in my opinion. Really wish the dev would have kept working on it... But still nice that it has so many mods. Sending settlers on expeditions would be an awesome feature for it.

    You are missing, Mannor Lords and Songs of Syx, the latter I have been playing loads of recently, I keep writing and re-writing my own one of these, I registered the domain Barbarian Frontier in 2008 and have built about 5 distinct versions of my own survival city builder, after playing Children of the Nile, I wanted to explore something that followed individuals with money and wants and needs, kinda how Ostiv has done it, so rather than a communist system, you can create either a more feudal or capitalist system and have worldwide trade and territory control. I keep messing up by also trying to cram multiplayer in where it doesn't really belong, and my latest version is using Unity DOTS which does allow for 100,000 NPCs all doing their own thing on the same map, with jobs and needs, but again I had to go and put multiplayer in as it was fun having armies of 10,000 on each side fighting and still running smoothly with up to 8 players but it kills the original theme, I think its best to stick to NPC raid events.

    How does Endzone compare with Surviving the Aftermath? They look much the same. Also, are there any Planetbase/Surviving Mars-like builders that are not based on Mars? • @perafilozof
      @perafilozof  Před rokem +1

      Hi, as for your first question they are not exactly the same because one, Endzone, is on a much bigger scale than the other, STA. Also Surviving the Aftermath has the map for character rpg like exploration and combat while Enzone has the scavenger hunts across it's main map. I would say both have their merits and both are worth playing. As for more Surviving Mars like games there really isn't anything out there yet. And even that one is incomplete. You could check out Per Aspera or Reshaping Mars or Solargene. But they are each different in a lot of ways.

I mean sure I can just go through Parallels or something but when I can I prefer just to buy a version of a game made to run natively on the Mac. I tend to gravitate to the games that suppose both OS's but there are not many of those in the city builder world.

Frostpunk and Going Medieval have different emphasis, but in general the idea is the same - build a settlement that can survive in given conditions. In Frostpuk it's more a macro scale, in Going Medieval it's more a microscale. Though once you get to do things in expeditions around the region in Going Medieval, the two will start to feel MUCH more similar I think. Planetbase is not it, I'm afraid, too much 'magic building ray' for my taste. I'd like to see a game in which, for example, the landing ship was viable housing, all the essentials came in 'kits' which could be assembled, but to build more of them you would need to set up all the manufacturing capability from things the kits could produce.
    I'd also like to see such a game that began with mission planning- what, specifically, do you need to take with you for the environment you're going to? What kind of structures can be built with simple local resources? (For instance, a planet with trees has a lot of possibilities lacking in a planet like Mars, where knowing how to build things out of dirt is paramount, so taking bulldozers and excavators in the first wave would be key, whereas the components of a sawmill might be more valuable on a planet with appropriate tree-like species.) That is not a bad take. It can be played in a way that the difficulty goes away, but that in my experience depends on two things: how you start and what are the settings for natural events. Somethimes it is much harder other times you can reach a point where you feel like you are done. But, for those who haven't mastered the game, there are plenty of moments where one failure windfalls into a catastrophe. So, I totally agree that on a personal level, many people who have learned it really well consider it now not very difficult.
