Choose any real region from the world. Choose your base of operations, then rebuild and readapt the buildings around you to create a self-sustaining settlement. Take charge of a group of survivors from your city. And when the night falls - Defend the zone from the infected!
    🛒 Steam store link: store.steampowered.com/app/14...
Since Infection Free Zone gives you controls over the flow of time, you should always use the pause key Space or time controls F1,2 and so forth to prevent stuff happening during exposition and story events.
This also lets you take stock of your surroundings and think on your first moves. If you have left the option for tutorial events On, you will have some direction of what and when to do, but even those won’t properly prepare you for what is to come.
You are given by default a squad of armed civilians to use as your scouts, scavengers and fighters and if you manage to keep them alive, they will earn experience and level up boosting their stats in combat and mentioned scavenging.
Buildings marked with question marks offer unknown loot, while those with clear markings, like these stacks of cans of food on all the other buildings offer exactly what is advertised. This is where you want to send your squads to scavenge first and secure your food.
The white line shows you the path the squad will take and also the place where it can enter the building. This is actually very important to remember because squads can only enter and exit buildings at these specific points and when you are running away from mutant devil dogs you don’t want to send your squad walking around a whole block to find shelter.
The time it takes to scavenge a building depends on three factors. How big the buildings are, how many squad members you have, and what is their veterancy level. For fast scavenging you want a small building, full 4 people in a squad and some chevrons on them. That does mean less loot but also quicker turnabouts and supply deliveries.
If you want to create more squads to scavenge your surroundings faster and fight off the infected, you need weapons to arm them with and the ammo for those guns. The HQ building has a few extra ones in stock but these are just handguns which aren’t very effective. What you need are automatic rifles and higher caliber rounds. These you can get by scavenging buildings which have the police shield icon above them.
Fields for growing crops are fundamental food producing plots of land you should keep close to your most fortified buildings. The crop harvested here can later be used to cook fresh meals. Better food actually influences the mood of your population and it is an important game mechanic for mid and late game.

Instead of leaving buildings close to base for later I just start the game by making 3 squads since the game gives you weapons for two fully armed and one half armed squad. Then the two fully armed squads rush to find a vehicle while the half squad is looting the immediate area to gather some basic supplies quickly. Having vehicles is the biggest difference in the early game, since even the smallest sedan can carry as much as several squads while moving many times faster, so in total one squad with a car is worth 5 to 10 times more than the best squad possible that's running on their feet.

Also I scavenge high-value locations with more than one team, to clear it faster. Still tinkering. I may experiment with 'outstations' with a tower and a small warehouse to speed-up clearing of more remote locations. Anybody know how the algorith for zombie-spawning and horde-size works? 🧐

I love this game but find it pretty difficult to get past day 20, it’s annoying I can’t get my squads to just get back in the cars, they will just leave the car behind to walk back when inventory is full rather than getting back in the car, pretty annoying to have to spend a whole in game day to go and get the car again. And the number of survivors does not increase very quickly which sort of ruins the city building aspect of it

I was actually doing pretty well with the game but after week (?) 35 the game starts throwing at me swarm every other week. Sometimes the swarm doesn’t appear but then the next night I got 24 hordes with about 12-18 infected plus a alpha leading them. Melted my defences in seconds and it ended my run at week 46 (tried baiting them with car with AR squad but not enough). This was on easy setting just to have a handle of things. Apparently people have the same problem too and it’s because of the latest patch where swarms would go crazy in size for no reason. I know it’s still EA but that is still BS.

@@perafilozof yes and no. So I've done 2 playthroughs until late game. The first one I started having major crash issues @200 pop with most of the playable map cleared. I was playing how I wanted to play and see fit, which was horde the map resources and build walls around a large area before dedicating staff to food and ammo production. The game started crashing so easily that I had to abandon the save. The next one I decided to play as passive as I could with map exploration. I reached 500ish pop and once again the game became unplayable due to frequent crashes. Not to mention the other bugs that came up like squad banners disappearing until reloading the save, and when your warehouse becomes full your people dump everything at their door step instead, but you can't see that either until you reload the save and go clean it up. Best to get a truck for that. To the question, most of the threads I saw on steam say that it is more common for crashes and major lag to occur when population gets high. No fix unless the devs do something about it. Also, hord attacks often break and stop coming after pop 200ish when playing with high hordes. As someone that does more than dabble with code, I want my money back. I'm here to see if they are going to do another hot fix update or note, and it looks like they want to add more to the campaign story instead. Just what I can tell from the patch history so far.
