      And that it was in the midst of the Islamic Golden Age. The opening sets the tone so well, when you Ben Yusuf lambastes the sitting emirs, disgusted that "When men speak of you, they speak of poets, music makers, doctors, scientists... where are your warriors?!" It not only is historically accurate, but also casts the emirs and their people as multi-dimensional and sympathetic, and really sets up the main villain's motivation so well (world conquest at any cost), and why we are rooting against him and his forces.

    The flag of Castilla y Leon, the flag that explored the Oceans, discovered and conquered new Continents, in USA for instance, first city (town) established under this flag was San Juan in South Caroline in 1560 I recall, last spanish city in USA was San Diego (California), in 1821 in San Diego the flag of Castilla y Leon was lowered, that day San Diego changed from spanish sobvereingnity to mexican, the spanish soldiers were ordered to cut their pigtails, their wifes cried because of that.

    "El CID" FILMED IN SPAIN at the famous Spanish coastal town of Peniscola, with its huge Moorish era "Castle on the beach". (Roughly halfway between Tarragona & Valencia). A genuine fishing village when filmed in 1961, but sadly the film resulted in wall to wall tourist Hotels within just a few years. Which destroyed this little towns medieaval flavour, so now it looks more like Miami Beach in Florida USA today !!!

    I remember seeing this film. It was great one. Wish they would be able to place it in more streaming services and also have a Blue Ray Version is available. From what I heard this was one of Scorsese's favorite films. Now yes this is a great film it has an impressive sets and recreations of the period and Heston and Loren give great performances. But there is evidence of a bit of Historical Revisionism. But still a great film one the most people may never see it be recreated anymore.

    • @tmorganriley
      @tmorganriley Před 10 měsíci

      As I understand it, in this instance it is less a case of modern historical revisionism or playing loose with history, so much as it was instead prioritizing being faithful to the historical legendarium that had sprung up; incorporating various elements of the local legends (in Spain), Medieval romances, and Renaissance plays written about El Cid.

    There are only a couple of films that actually capture medieval jousts as they once were.
    El Cid.
    Ivanhoe
    And perhaps the series 'The Tudors'
    I do not think we shall see others in the future. As brutal as they were, there was also an element of chivalry, of nobility and the glory of Western civilization woven deep and thru out. These are qualities the political Left would as soon erase for the sake of PC.

    I saw this movie in Spanish class in High School. . . . very memorable...I am thankful for my Spanish Teacher. Or how about Europeans from various locations like England, France, Spain, Sweden, etc.
      might it be more similar to refer to Native Americans of various tribes/locations such as the Pawnee, Souix, Blackfoot, Cherokee, Apache, Navajo, Hopi, Tewa, Towan, Ute, Payute, Tarahumara, Aztec, Toltec, Chichimec, Mixtec, Huichol, Maya, Muisca, Guahibo, Sikuani, Inca, ... many nations who developed most of the crops we eat, ...this term "Mexicans" has been oversimplified and disparaged. It seems like Native Americans would be more deserving of reparations and affirmative action status more than descendents of the European Spanish Conquistadores....right?
