  • He was born Rodrigo (or Ruy) Díaz de Vivar. Vivar being the town where he was born. It is near Burgos. He was born either in 1040 or 1043. Historians are not sure of the date. He died in Valencia in 1099. His name, "El Cid" was given to him by the Moors. In the mixture of the Spanish and Arabic language they used, they called him "As-Sid" (Lord or Chief). This was pronounced by the Spaniards as "El Cid", but they themselves actually called him "Campeador" (Champion)

    My father is buried near the castle that appears at 2:38. The town is called Torrelobatón, and it is in the center of The Old Castille.
    We must distinguish between the literary Cid and the historical Cid. Of the literary there is little to discuss, since it is based on a few written poems. That is the Cid that I prefer, because he chisels the prototype of the Castilian, of the frontiersman, accustomed to fighting for his land, oblivious to the ancient honor of the Asturians and Leonese, always faithful to his word and defender of the weak, rebellious and courteous to the other, stoic and tough, long-suffering and ascetic, unyielding and courageous.
    The reciters passed through the villages of Castile in the Middle Ages and recited the verses of the Poem. In school, we learned those lines by heart. Thus was born Castile, land of my father and soul of Spain.

    Dispite the Hollywood version of El Cid, the movie holds true to epic poem the Song of El CID. Also, most of the historical elements hold true. It's a great movie.

      @themailman43 short answer yes. The Alomavides were conservative Muslims. They found their brother Muslims in Spain too liberal for their tastes so they took over. The meeting with ben Yusuf is stylized but the Spanish Moors asked for his help as the Christians were advancing. Thus the saying: better a camel herder in the Maghrib than a swine herder in Castile. Not all Spanish Moors sided with ben Yusuf as they got a better deal with Alphonso than with ben Yusuf.

    His wife Jimena remained as Ruler of Valencia for some years after Rodrigo's death, but the Almoravids were able to retake the city in 1105. Valencia remained a sovereign Muslim kingdom being reconquered by king James I of Aragon in 1238, when it became a sovereign Christian kingdom under the federal Crown of Aragon (Aragon, Valencia, Majorca, Sicily, Franch-Comté, Languedoc and Rousillon)

      Constantine Joseph Didn't El Cid initially unite the muslims and christians? When he was sent into exile and temporarily took control of a Moorish army?

    • @ConstantineJoseph
      @ConstantineJoseph Před 9 lety +2

      Yes he did. He was neutral and that virtue he expressed was a true Christian value which is tolerating all kinds of people. However he was a kind of post Visigothic era dux or Duke that meant that he had his own army protected his own lands and did mostly to what he pleases as the authority is trusted on him by the King whom he pleaded fealty to.
      Other than that he is more of a Duke who ran his own show. The Muslims in Córdoba were tolerant of Christians 100-200years prior to Cid and the Christian Visigoths in the MUslim Caliphate were treated well could learn and do viable business. Create art called Mozarabic art which had Eastern influence and Visigothic Germanic and Roman influences. Very unique.
      I am very intrigued with Spain although I learnt a lot on Anglo Saxons, rome, Byzantine. Spain is a cauldron of the mixture of all civilizations in the meditteranean

    • @andreslorenzo8493
      @andreslorenzo8493 Před 9 lety +1

      Constantine Joseph this is writen by Serafin Fanjul and give a idea about the untrue tolerant behaviour of moors in Spain The ease with which the Arabs conquered the peninsula in 711 was not accompanied, according to Fanjul, an assimilation so obvious. 'The Arabs did not expect the ease of conquest. There was weakness in a system in which a minority caste of Germans dominated majority population that they should hispanorromans feel very willing to fight for them. The mass of the population was four or five million. Germanic dominant minorities began to integrate into the country after 200 years. It fell visigótic apparatus; But watch out, remained the ideological component 'he says.
      'The personal names of Christians in the tenth and eleventh centuries remained predominantly Christian, indicating prestige. Just as today puts Vanessa or Samantha girls name because there is an Anglo-Saxon prestige. These Christians were going north when they could. Between the eighth and eleventh centuries were massive leaks Christians who settled in the north, "added the professor.
      Fanjul also challenges one of the most established ideas among many scholars that Muslims of al-Andalus were Spanish. 'I doubt that for four centuries the great civilization of Al-Andalus has a presence in the life of Spain. Al-Andalus is a part of the history of Spain; but another thing that's Spain and that Muslims were Spaniards. Until the fifteenth century can't say there are Spanish. Muslims of Al-Andalus in any way were Spaniards because they had neither the intention nor the cultural characteristics of belonging to a cultural and political project that wasn't theirs. His project was Arab.
      'Even the Moors in the sixteenth century felt a permanent hatred towards society around them. They were not Spaniards. That hatred can be justified by how badly they were treated. But the truth is they collaborated with pirates, they rebelled on more than one occasion and were a permanent fifth column. The Moors did not want to be Spanish 'he stresses. Fanjul summarizes his words exhaustively: 'Islam entered Spain and left Spain by force. It is the reality of history '.
      The coexistence that many have praised Moors, Jews and Christians was not so, according to Fanjul. 'That alleged coexistence is taken for granted and made. And it wasn't. There was really basic problems. Religions are a factor of permanent conflict between humans. Racial problems will be over when there is an absolute fusion. The issue of religion is different. Not only pray that some one way and some another. The conflict occurs when that happens the social field. for example, when Christian women are forced to wear the veil.
      Fanjul has a hard review for writers who idealize the Muslim past of the peninsula. 'Those who attempt this forced resurrection of Al-Andalus helps fuel an Andalusian irredentism that will benefit little by Andalusia and Spain. We have reached levels of freedom thanks to belonging to European culture and the Latin. Human rights, coexistence and the place of women in our society are issues that I am unwilling to give up, "he concludes.

"Field Champion" was a battlefield honour given only to Nobles or Alefrez's that had never lost a single battle. Rodrigo never lost a battle in his life.

    from 600AD to 1500 Spain was the cultural light of Western Europe, both Christian and Muslim lands. Both sides had freedom or religion, both sides protected each others' faithful, and mutual persecutions along 900 years are just a handful.They tried to concentrate in what united them: culture and learning; and not what separated them: politics. This openness included the Jews. Back and forth conversions between Islam and Christianity were voluntary.

Rodrigo repaid by serving the Sultan of Seville (an enemy of Castile) and was accused of disloyalty to the king, thus Alfonso VI banished Rodrigo in 1081 and broke his liege/vassal relationship. Rodrigo went to still Muslim Zaragoza to serve both Emir al-Muqtadir and his son Emir al-Mu'tamin.

    @4JBrewer It would be interesting to see a Muslim filmmaker of the status of Anthony Mann make an historical actioner about Ben Yusef, and color the Cid as a pure villain. Even Darth Vader, before he became Darth Vader, was a loving man who went the wrong path; ideologically, I'm not sure even Ben Yusef could be accused of that, as Muhammed did indeed command the spreading of Islam through conquest. Not substantially different from the evangelic commission of Jesus to the disciples.

    Because Muslims/Christians did not pay taxes in the same rates if their government was of their faith, My Grandfather could have been a Christian, I became a Mullawad Muslim convert, but my grandson again became Cristian... race had nothing to do with it, because Muslims were also white, and racism began in the 16th century. Intermarriage was common, and the Three Faiths could participate openly in each others' rites and ceremonies...

    Yes but "Hispania" wasn't Spain.The modern term Spain is a derivative from Hispania but it is not the same thing altogether, Spain is a modern concept, far more recent than EL CID. Hispania included part of what is Portugal today and France. So who is the stupid now??? Britain still is what Britania was, that is the difference.

    @CSATexan Thats the problem. What happend to Islam is same that happened here in Europe with Ideological Radicalism since French Revolution. Islam had its counterpart with Islamic Radicalism that has nothing to do with True Traditional Islam. That for most part was destroid by Western Impearlism and European Colonialism.

    The term Spain -Hispania -exists since roman times and even earlier. The word has phoenician origins. Your statement is as stupid as to pretend there wasn't a 'Britain' before 1707

    Of course, the real Cid was often villainous, and the real Ben Yusef was often heroic, but the movie has to color them purely good and evil. It's ironic that this African emir in his opening speech condemns doctors and science, since the real Ben Yusef was justifiably proud of the medicines his Islamic doctors had created--the first antibiotics ever. The Moorish nation shared their medical discoveries with the world, including Spain.

    Work of the Inquisitor.
    El Cid Campeador, former Catalan hero usurped centuries ago by the Castilian dictatorship in power.
    It is enough to read the original of Cantar del Mio Cid to know that the place name VIVAR does not appear in any of its pages and the one really named is that of the Catalano speaking population of BIAR, of similar sound. Cervantes wrote El Quijote with the intention of denouncing the Castellano usurpation of this Catalan character.
    The strong limitations in censorship ordered by the Inquisitor forced him to devise the central character CIDE HAMETE BERENGELI, which he describes as true and authentic author of the story; in Christian language is CID SON OF BERENGUER.
