- He was born Rodrigo (or Ruy) Díaz de Vivar. Vivar being the town where he was born. It is near Burgos. He was born either in 1040 or 1043. Historians are not sure of the date. He died in Valencia in 1099. His name, "El Cid" was given to him by the Moors. In the mixture of the Spanish and Arabic language they used, they called him "As-Sid" (Lord or Chief). This was pronounced by the Spaniards as "El Cid", but they themselves actually called him "Campeador" (Champion)
ever notice how most of the anger and hate massages have died off by the time you get to a part 2 or 3 on a youtube movie? This is a great film. I for one am an unabashed Heston fan and this is one of his best and gave him a great platform to build off of going into The War Lord in 65.
I remember growing reading and dreaming of being by El Cid's side.
Man, that orchestra doesn't quit.

According to the History Channel they used to crap into a hole somewhere in the castle.And it used to fall down a stone chute and land in the courtyard. The court yard was full of crap and they had sanitary problems. Also the smell was bad.There also must have been lots of flies.

No. Ruy not mean " red ". Ruy is short for Rodrigo, which is the real name. It's like saying Billy instead Williams
That maybe so I haven't looked into the history but I have a special nostalgia for this film because I grew up watching it. And it took on a mythos of its own. I would picture myself as a knight because I was inspired by the IDEAS behind it. Same reason that people read the Bible and like the myths that too was unverified archaeologically. So historical accuracy didn't factor into it. : )
@kingslegion1 You are right. Most films have no storyline and worst sometimes no real meaning anymore. I like going to the movies, but not for special effects only.

In real life Sophia was married to Carlo Ponti..An old baldy Italian guy.
Carlo Ponti is the movie director who identified Sophia's talent in acting and brought her the best actress award of Oscar in his movie(name forgotten). She was so grateful thus to marry him and been faithful till his pass away.
Buy the HBO series ROME. Its better than the SOPRANOS. There's only two seasons of it. I bought both. Lots of action, intrigue, back stabbing etc etc.Romance, nudity and people getting it on. Lots of fighting. Its the story of Julius Ceaser's rise to power. And his nephew Octavian. And the real reason Octavian went after Marc Antony.
