Spain was a country that was a mixture of cultures and a land at constant warfare among many factions and one religion against another. Castillian Spain was named Castille because of the sheer amounts of castles built to defend against the Muslim Taifas and also against other Christian factions like Aragon and Navarre.
Some of the greatest dark age to medieval battles were in Spain, in a 700 year long "reconquista". The Spanish were already fighting the crusades long before the Franco Norman crusde of 1099 launched by the Pope.
El Cid was this giant of a figure that stood out amongst the martial nations of Spain. He was not a sovereign. But he was this master tactician, courageous and highly skilled mounted knight that no one could defeat in battle. His name is even more famous and more prestigious than the kings of Castille and Leon, and the Kings of Aragon, Kings of Asturias and the Kings of Navarre. Goes to show how much of a legend he was in combat and his great popularity.
I would even go on to say that he is the best European knight of all time since the dark ages to the end of the medieval period. His track record, the validation given to him by both his allies and enemies as El "Campeador", single handedly besting the Kingdom of Aragon's best knight in single combat at the Battle of Graus 1063 AD seals it.

Unlike Ben Hur and King of Kings I have no childhood memory of El Cid, coming to it as an adult - probably because it was not a religiously-themed movie like the other two, which were guaranteed Christmas and Easter viewing in the 1970s. By the time I watched it in the 1990s, it chimed well with my Medieval history studies. Nevertheless, Miklós Rózsa’s El Cid score demonstrate what a prodigious talent he was. It completely captures the essence of medieval Spain (Castille), the tranquility of the serene scenes, and the dramatic energy of the battle scenes.
There is a magic of Miklós Rózsa’s scores; that is they have the effect of exuding the mood of the time(s) they portray. If you could transport back in time and play one of his scores, you would be forgiven to think that they would not be out of place to the people of that time. 🎼❤

Unquestionably, all three - Bernstein, Mancini and Rozsa - were extraodinarily gifted and skilled composers. Each film is quite different from the others and their scores are not only appropriate for their genres, but serve as ideal creative underpinnings for the films themselves. However, Miklos Rozsa's majestic original score for the epic El Cid is at once stirring and has a hugely broad sweep which aurally depicts epic battles, the menacing threat of the moorish horde that swept over Spain, and simultaenously, provided wonderfully nuanced and delicate background for love scenes, as well as the tumultuous relationships between Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, his wife and the kings he served. It never fails to amaze me that this monumental musical achievement failed to receive the Oscar in 1961.

+Walter Sperr Mr. Sperr, " El Cid" was nominated for 3 Oscars in 1962. As you may recall, '61 was totally dominated by " West Side Story", & " Judgment At Nuremburg". Miklos R. should have won the Oscar for his stirring score,& that was an Academy error. My own take is that by this time his grand , Ultra-Operatic approach to scoring was seen as dated & predictable. I disagree, but I do see how that conclusion could have been reached. I love this score Fred..... while its billed as the Soundtrack.
, Its a studio rerecording that Rozsa conducted. Its my understanding that half of the actual soundtrack was recorded either in Spain or Rome and the other half in London. But Samuel Bronston messed over Rozsa allowing so much amazing music to be cut!

This is one off the greatest film scores ever composed, from one of the greatest adventure films ever made. It was a travesty that this film music didn't win the Oscar For Best Film Score in 1961 for Miklos Rozsa. It was also a travesty that Alfred Newman didn't win the Oscar for his film score for "Captain From Castile" in 1947.

I am impelled to correct the above information: This performance is from the MGM Record Album SE 3977 ST - and, therefore, is neither the MGM Studio Orchestra nor even an original soundtrack recording. Sadly, with extremely-few exceptions, there were NO original soundtrack recordings whatsoever issued from MGM Records during the supervision of producer Jesse Kaye. This performance is by Miklós Rózsa conducting “The Symphony Orchestra Graunke of Munich.”

    • @johneddy908

The orchestra you mentioned is known today as the Munich Symphony Orchestra. Its original name (Symphonie-Orchester Graunke in German) was for its founder, Kurt Graunke.

You can blame the AFM for this. Outrageous 're-use' fees for soundtracks released in any commercial format. Later, after Max Herman, their president, retired, the new leadership at Local 47 realised the potential of royalties from soundtrack re-issues in limited editions, thus paving the way for small, independent record labels to take the initiative.

Saw itwhen it first came out. After seven times of viewing I noticed something I never saw before..toward the end of the movie when El Cid liberates the castel of Castile and says "we bring you bread" his army comes marvhing through the gstes and sandwiched between two buildings watching the entire production is a little man in his sports coat and cap watching the whole thing. It was never, to my knowledge edited out. Its probaby still there. You'll probably have to find an OLD copy...not a new copy of El Cid. A new one has probably been edited. If you find it, then copy that scene and upload it on CZcams...share it with everyone.

If you're loving Miklos Rosza's score, you might want to seek out a symphony he wrote early in his career (unrelated to his film scores), and which gathered dust for most of his life. I have a CD recording of it, but couldn't find it, just now, in a couple of quick Amazon and CZcams searches. I hope it's not out of print!
