- ** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
We've got an absolute beauty for you today from Akash Doulani. It's a GENUINELY APPROACHABLE sudoku but has all the wonderful logic you'd expect from a puzzle featured on the channel. Give it a try, you won't regret it.
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits in cages must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Clues outside the grid give the sum of the digits along the indicated diagonal. Digits can repeat along such diagonals if allowed by the other rules. Each purple line must contain a set of non-repeating, consecuitive digits. These digits can appear in any order.

I find it hilarious that he wrote off the pseudo x-wing of 5s when its what helped me break into the puzzle by noting that none of lines had a 5 on them.
That's what did it for me too. Now I'm extra excited for his solve (only watching the video after solving myself)
Same! Solved the puzzle myself a few minutes ago and then wanted to watch the video and the fact he didn’t use the fives is funny
Love that Simon starts with a great deduction on where 5s can go, then completely ignores the effects :D
Right…at 15:01 finally notices the little killer 14 constraints!
It helped me get started! :D
'What is Simon going to deduce > explain > ignore today?"
It has become a bingo card moment on Simons vids.😫
@@ceevio_art ok then dont watch them
@@gliiterr Don't get me wrong. I love these guys and they've taught me more about puzzle solving than I can say. There was a thing about a year ago on this channel where a few of the regulars created the "CTC bingo card" that they would "mark off" every time Simon said "numpty", or "oh, bother", etc. So the bingo card thing was in reference to that (it probably missed the mark by the looks of things). But it is true as Stine points out at the top of this thread, that Simon has a habit of making brilliant deductions, explaining them magnificently, just to forget about using them for the rest of the solve. Its quite funny. I was just agreeing with Stine.
(And the yelling emoji was supposed to represent me yelling at the screen, which is a favourite pastime for a lot of us who watch every day. No malice intended.🙏)
There's a really neat way of solving this puzzle that I think Simon didn't spot. I'm guessing it's the expected break-in because of just how pretty it is!
The four renbans form a transposed Phistomophel ring with caged digits (specifically r1c3-r1c7, r9c3-r9c7, r4c3-r6c3, r4c7-r6c7). Since none of those cages can have 5s, you know right away that each of the renbans is extreme (i.e. 1-4 or 6-9).
My natural reaction to seeing four 2x2s lining up in the grid is to immediately do Phistomophel.
He spotted that the 5's in Row 1 and 9 and Columns 3 and 7 have to be in Boxes 1, 3, 7 & 9 but then didn't spot that meant you couldn't put a 5 on any of the renbans meaning they have to be 1-4 or 6-9
That is exactly how i solved it... but a pretty fun puzzle =)
I saw that telegraphed and wasn't sure what to make of it.
Agree, it is much easier. It is the way I solved it by the way :)
Thanks Simon for covering this sudoku. Some days back I watched a video on CTC which made great use of SET theory. The intended logic behind this was the 16 cells containing the renban lines and the cells r19c34567 c37r456 would contain the same set of digits. Now, if you notice the cages, they cannot contain the digit 5. So, the renban cells also cannot contain the digit 5. Any four cell renban without 5 can either contain 1234 or 6789. This was further aided by the 5 cage which was a part of box 1 which implies that the renban cells in box 1 can only contain 6789. Similarly for box 3, where the renban cells would contain 1234 because of the 15 cage. The givens 2 and 9 in boxes 7 and 9 also gives us the digits in the renban cells in boxes 7 and 9.
The high-low digits approach used by you was also very interesting to watch.
I enjoyed this puzzle - thank you for creating it and suggesting it to CTC! I gave my husband and son one of your sudoku books for Christmas and my husband has done all of the puzzles. My turn next!
@@emilywilliams3237 Thanks. Glad you liked the puzzle. Hope your husband son liked my book.
Thanks for this little gem. I did spot that 5 couldn't go on any renban, and the givens and the R1 cages tell us which is high and which is low. This was beautiful setting, and I'm sad that Simon missed that, knowing how much he likes beautiful logic.
It's rare that I even attempt a Simon puzzle, but I found the video length encouraging. Happy to say I finished it in just over 31 minutes.
Real nice puzzle, and I don't think I could have managed this not so long ago. Thank you.
Same here, but I took 104 minutes haha
About six months ago I started watching this channel just because I didn't know how to play Sudoku, at least not with any sense of logic or strategy. Some of the early videos I watched included Simon saying, "I know you're probably shouting at the screen that there's something I missed." At the time, I definitely didn't as I was perplexed at how Simon saw things so quickly (I often had to pause and figure things out in a much slower pace).
Today, just a few minutes in I saw that 11 mini killer couldn't have a nine in A7, and I wanted to shout at the screen.
That means, not only is Simon human, but he is an excellent teacher! In about six months he's trained my mind to see logic in ways lightyears beyond where I was just six months ago. Thank you for a great channel!
The first thing I've noticed was that r1c7 could not have been a 9 because of the 11 clue outside the grid. I was sitting there and thought to myself when will Simon notice it.
Nice video, greetings from Germany
Yeah, I was astonished that it took him so long to see it. When he finally saw it, he said that he hadn't looked at the 11 clue before, but he had actually looked at it several times.
@@jwolfe01234 He looked at what would happen if it were a 6, 7, or 8, but never actually got around to checking what would happen if it were a 9 until the end.
Today has been a weird day for me, cant wait to get lost in yet another brilliant sudoku with simon's soothing voice
That’s what it is for me too, a daily point to calm down and get lost in some beautiful logic 8)
Before the 8:00 mark, Simon filled the 6789 in the 15-cage and looked at how those options affected the 11-diagonal. He looked at 6, 7, 8, and determined the renban in box 3 contained low digits. He then stopped, and never looked at what the 9 option in R1C7 would mean (a double 1 in box 3). This would have eliminated the 9 right away. This 9 hung around in the pencil marks until nearly the end. Sigh...
today was one of those days where I started yelling at the screen really early and never stopped. Look at the 11 clue! Look at the 11 clue! In the end I was just glad he didn't rule out the nine without using the diagonal clue.
And when he finally got to eliminating the 9, he talked about not having looked at that clue. Argh.
@@TheEricthefruitbat I complain, but in the cases where I get stuck and watch the video, Simon (or Mark) will see something obvious that _I've_ missed.
@@johnh2052 I totally agree. Simon does have a tendency to forget or ignore previous analyses/deductions/proofs, or in this case - an important part of his start.
Every now and then I come back to this channel for the comfort and interesting methods to solve sudoku. Brings back good childhood memories. :')
Also, I've watched this channel during last year's ramadhan every night, and Im doing the same for this year's ramadhan.
Thank you so much.
@5:50 The 5s do form a very bizarre X-Wing with the four corner boxes. Rows 1 & 9, and Columns 3 & 7 must contain four 5s within four boxes because all intersections are ruled out. This means 5 cannot appear on any of the Renbans forcing them all to be 1234 or 6789, the bottom two of which are immediately identified by the given digits. The upper Renbans are identified as high/low by the Killer+Cage clues intersecting them.
I imagine that is the intended breakin. And I can see other people have appreciated this as well. :)
Simon's comment at 25:50 is so true: I stumbled around for over 30 minutes, not being able to find a single digit, until I experienced a big A-HA moment regarding the 5s. I ended up finishing the puzzle in 54 minutes. Congratulations to Akash Doulani for such a clever and fun puzzle, and thank you CTC for bringing it to our attention!
On first look, with that extended x-wing and jellyfish, there can't be a 5 in any of the horseshoe Renban (all 4 cells)... before 6:09. And then you can immediately set all 4 quadruples... using boxes 4&6 to finish the ghost pairs on all 5s and the givens. That could have saved you 5-10 minutes :-)
Hence Hydra would have been a great title for this puzzle :-)
lol why would you use x-wing with jellyfish instead of simple set?
@@animaaad You mean aside from getting 20+ cells pencil marked instantly? Simon showed what I meant at the very end of the vid assuming you haven't gotten there yet.
@@animaaad u can use a Phistomofel'ish Ring, and see imediately, there is no 5 in the ring, also is no 5 in the horseshoes.
@@Ratzfaz I guess that's the 3rd or 4th evolution of it. I can't recall seeing it in the channel (or named that way). But ya, you're completely right. And it's not like a missed a video recently :-).
Two days ago, I looked at this puzzle and couldn't find the break-in to save my life. Today, I took a second look, spotted the restrictions on fives and the renbans, dope-slapped myself, and finished the puzzle in a few minutes. The lesson? Never, ever do any real work on a Friday!
25:01
Very nice use of SET to get the renbans under control.
16:22 finish. I also used the "x-wings" on 5s to break in. When you realize that 5s have to be in rows 1 and 9 and columns 3 and 7 in boxes 1/3/7/9, none can be on the lines. The given digits and 5/15 cages establish the lines as high or low. Work from there! Loved it!
Thank you for another wonderful video! Cheers!
That 9 on the 11 diagonal was driving me nuts since the 7 minutes mark when you stopped checking the maths at 8 lol. Regardless, Beautiful puzzle and great solve. Well done Simon!
For a moment I looked away monitor and then Simon was full screen and I think I broke something
18:41 ... took me about 8 minutes to find the break-in; once I got there, the rest was straightforward. But I REALLY liked the break-in for this one.
Nice puzzle!
i really need a smile now, great timing
I think this is the first time I’ve had a similar solve path to Simon! I took a lot longer to do it, but I got the trick with the 5’s and the renbans. Really nice puzzle!
Loved this one. Approachable and fun.
I appreciate that you take your good time to share what's going on in these puzzles. And please have more of those approachable puzzles. I think GAS puzzles are explored a bit too quickly.
Loved this puzzle. Relatively approachable and a rare example of a non-GAS puzzle that I managed to solve (and in a decent time too!). The logic is a delight if you use SET/Phistomofel and keep track of how many of each digit you're expecting to find in each set.
Good setting and solving, and shoutout to the MVP of this puzzle, the number 5!
I'm constantly a couple weeks behind, what with limited time but trying to solve all the puzzles, first on my own, then watching if/when I get stuck. I generally have times about 3x as long as either Simon or Mark, unless I need help, then they're longer.
So when I got to the puzzle that fell on my dad's birthday, I was amused to find it not only had birthday dedications, but one to Harry, which was my dad's name. He would have been 90, however, not 24. Anyway, this comment is in his memory.
This was perfect difficulty for me, great puzzle.
Another great puzzle from Akash, he's an excellent setter and whilst he can produce really tough puzzles most are excellent and possible.
Thanks Max
35:13. Took quite a while to get started, for me, but then went pretty smoothly. A fun challenge!
A suggestion for the channel:
Sometimes Mark and Simon will refer to a sudoku as "quite approachable" or "genuinely approchable" or other such terms.
Would it be possible to get some sort of CtC difficulty scale? Maybe after the puzzle is over, say something like "on a scale of 0-10, that puzzle was probably a 5 or a 6". That would really help me (as a regular viewer), but I suspect would be even more helpful to new or one-time viewers who may have no clue what the difference is between "genuinely approachable" and "quite approachable", or between "impossible" and "miracle" and "quite difficult".
There wouldn't necessarily need to be any hard and fast rules about difficulty; the idea would be that as long as Simon and Mark are mostly consistent with each other, that would give the scale a usability factor. And I think it would totally make sense to judge the difficulty *after* the solve, rather than before.
I completely didn't even think about the domino in b3c7, but once Simon highlighted it I could see why it was relevant, and the rest of the puzzle was plain sailing ⛵. No idea how many weeks it would have taken me to spot that break-in on my own though!
A slightly easier breakin to the puzzle - at least for regular CTC viewers - might have been SET by putting the renban 2x2 into one set... the other set would have been entirely in the cages and therefore does not contain 5s. So you know the rebans are either 1234 or 6789. Then you could not repeat two high or two low renbans in a 3x9 strip since the four digits have to find a home into three cells. The given digits will give you the correct orientation.
37:35! I needed a little push in the right direction before I started looking at the highs and lows, but after that it was smooth sailing!
These "high-low" puzzles are some of my favourites.
That was another fun one. Thanks!
This opened up a lot easier for me by pencil marking where the 5s had to be--I know Simon doesn't like pencil marking but in this case I think it really does help. The necessary placements (and prohibitations) of the 5s along with the exterior sums made for a much easier start at placing digits.
11:41 today. Nice one. a bit harder GAS. I liked it.
23:14 for me, really enjoyed the puzzle because I kept finding things. sometimes I get really stuck at a point when doing these sudoku's but this time I just rushed through it
I've been deployed for a little over a month in Germany. (US military) so my internet connection has been atrocious. As has my level of free time. So I haven't seen a SINGLE CTC video since I left. And I watched religiously for quite some time now. Regardless of video length. I am SO upset that I can't watch more. But as soon as I get back home, I promise you, I'll be binge watching like it's the newest episode of game of thrones.
Absolutely beautiful.
Shame that Simon missed the 5-based break-in but impressive that he still managed to finish it in style.

FAQ:
Q1: You missed something!
A1: That could very well be the case! Human speech can be hard to understand for computers like me! Point out the ones that I missed and maybe I'll learn!
Q2: Can you do this for another channel?
A2: I've been thinking about that and wrote some code to make that possible. Let me know which channel you think would be a good fit!
I figured Row1 and the 14 clue were the break-in.
since the 14 needed 2 digits from 6789 and 1 digit from 1234.
minimum you can make from 6789 is 6+7 (13), so the left digit in the 5 cage from box 1 must be a 1 AND places the 67 and 89 pair AND places the 4, allowing you to start from there.
16:45 for me. Nice Phisto ring there. Noticed there are no 5's in the ring, so the bands were easy to fill.
Although you got there by gradual elimination, you could have worked out at the start that no renban could contain a 5, therefore they all had to be 1234 or 6789. The given digits plus the bits of cage butting into boxes 1 and 3 mean we know each renban's high/low status. It's a pity you missed this, because I know you'd have got all excited about this bit of beautiful logic.
Very approachable - completed in 14m17s.
Took me over half an hour. I knew the interaction of 5 and rebans so got to where Simon was at 13 minutes in. Slowed down after that. What broke it open for me was realizing that the 5 cage in box 8 can only go one way,
Solved it with help from the video.
30:58 for me - I saw the modified Phistomefel ring, and how it couldn't have any 5's in it.
I'm not sure this can be classified as genuinely approachable. I saw that the video was super short, so I assumed I would have a chance at solving it, but so far it's been 25 minutes and I have yet to figure out how to even start the puzzle.
Simon is trolling the audience again. The result is that I am upset and angry, and I guess I am not alone.
I took a couple looks at it while he was explaining and realized, "I have no idea how to start this...how is this approachable?"
I agree with this. My time was nearing 40 minutes. I'm not a fast solver by any stretch, but the typical GAS puzzles featured on this channel take me ~10 minutes.
I agree - it's a great puzzle, but it's in a different league of difficulty from what this channel normally classes as "genuinely approachable".
Same boat. It took me 60 minutes and I usually do the gas puzzles in under 25
*rmath101* explained below that a transposed *Phistomefel ring* can be used to rule *5* out of the renban lines, forcing them to contain extreme digits (either {1,2,3,4} or {6,7,8,9}). That's beatiful logic. However, there's a simpler approach for the same purpose, which is more likely to be the intended path by the constructor *Akash Doulani.* It reaches the same conclusion by means of *plain sudoku* logic:
1) Notice that no cage can contain a *5*
2) Colour in yellow the non-caged cells in *rows 1* and *9*
3) Colour in blue the non-caged cells in *columns 3* and *7*
4) In each corner box, the digit *5* must be either blue or yellow. For instance, if 5 is
*blue* in *box 1* (as opposed to blue in box 3, within the first row)
then by sudoku it must be:
*yellow* in *box 3*
*blue* in *box 9*
*yellow* in *box 7*
5) In other words, *5* is ruled out of the renban lines, forcing them to contain extreme digits.
Anyway, this is by no means *genuinely* approachable logic in my opinion‼
*Brooks Moses* suggested below an even more elegant way to rule 5 out of renbans. It is similar to my approach, but uses smarter logic in step 4:
[...]
4) Since the intersections between columns {c3, c7} and rows {r1, r9} are all caged, they cannot contain 5s. This means that there must be four 5s in {c3, c7, r1, r9}, and they must be all placed in boxes 1, 3, 7, and 9, where they must be either *blue* or *yellow❗*
5) In other words, 5 is ruled out of the renban lines, forcing them to contain extreme digits.
Because of a wrong calculation, I put the 5 in row 9 in the wrong box, but fortunately realized pretty quickly that it didn't work. So I had to delete some steps and position the 5 in the right box. After that everything went very quickly. The combination of diagonals and purple lines was an ideal orientation. A wonderful puzzle. 👍❤🙂
That 9 on the eleven clue was driving me bonkers as you can't have a 1 and a 1 in the same box on the same renband. So much creaming at Simon tonight. Great video as always many thanks
Especially yelly because that particular little killer was the only deduction I could make before giving up and watching the video instead.
Same. It took me 40 mins to solve this one but I saw that right away! It's fun to see the pros struggle sometimes! :D
Exactly, and what made it even more frustrating was he ran through the options for 6 7 and 8 to suggest what might be on the renban line and stopped without even mentioning the 9!!!! Aaagh, Simon, why do you do this to me?!?
It took me *way* too long to realize how restricted the fives are 😅
Very cool puzzle!
Oh. I used Set to establish that there are no 5s on the renbans because of the 5&10 cages. And from there everything went smoothly.
Haven't watched the video yet, only scrolled through, and apparently set was not necessary. Huh... interesting. ✨
It did make me smile 😃
I think this Sudoku had the break-in in the fact that 5's are located outside the renban lines, so you had high-low parity.
Yook me over an hour but got it done. Thanks for this nice puzzle.
I did actually figure out the renban lines but somehow made other mistakes that made me fail so I guess I'll have to try again.
quickly used no 5 in cages to place them in 2 of the phistofomel boxes and therefore only 2 places on the ring which automatically ruled out 5 from being on any renban line.
When you mentioned the locations of the 5s at the start you could have went a bit further and saw that the 5s in the corner boxes couldn't be on the renbans and thus had to be extremes (1234 or 6789)
I tried this twice, focused on boxes 3 and 9, peaked at the answer once I made significant progress, and was horribly, horribly wrong with almost every digit.
A simple counting argument shows from the very beginning that there are no 5s on renbans. (r1, r9, c3 and c7 need four 5s in total - the intersections are ruled out. So in each of boxes 1379 the 5 is off the renban)
The only thing I got faster than Aumon was the little killer 11, but even that didn't help as much as he did because I didn't have row one eliminated down quite so far. It still took over an hour for something genuinely approachable but I missed a lot of sudoku as I filled in cages
Today an approachable puzzle by sudetter Akash Doulani preceded by Simon of the future wishing happy birthdays
Misread the sum in the r1c6c7 cage as 5 instead of 15, spent forever trying to find the break in, and gave up 😄😄
I'm smiling just to see Simon being forced to do Sudoku.
Took me almost 20 mins to figure out where the 5s go, but 30:17 mins to complete overall XD I am proud of myself.
i wish it was possibile without the cages in box 4. i found the solve way more interesting without forcing the 5 in column 3. but i ded need the cages to place the 6 in box 4.
I'm concerned about Simon's short-term memory.
Simon really didn’t want to look at the 11 diagonal. It the first one I tackled along with the observation that the 15 cage in C7 had to be in R1 C8/9.
I think Simon underestimates my stupidity
20:13 for me. its ok for a GAS puzzle (check description)
Akash has become the world's first Sudetter. :U
:)
17:49 Third time is a charm, the third time a 5 sees r7c7 five is removes as a possibility.
Not to say I saw it first, but very shortly after he placed the 6789 in the 15 cage from row 1, I noticed it would not be a nine!
17:17 you can get rid of 9, because on 20 little killer there is 9, and minimum value of cells r7c2 and r9c4 is3 that gives 12, so r6c1 max is 8
There were 2 3s in the corners and no song 😔😔
14:10 r7c7 cannot be 5, and it's locked in r9 in b9, so we have 34 pair in c7
49:24 for me!
Going nuts that Simon didn't see the 11 little killer
Nice! 39:16 for me.
A clean 17:34 on this puzzle!
20:55
R1C7 could never have been a 9 thanks to the diagonal sum. Would've needed 1-1 in box 3 which isn't gonna happen. That was torture to see that getting missed
45 minutes in and only 2 digits and 2 renbans narrowed down…I’m not smiling yet 😂
You guys forget his intro is several minutes long plus he spends the video explaining each way he finds the digits, so his time would be much faster if he were just doing it in silence like the rest of you. Also not everyone who enjoys his videos is a sudoku expert and we like seeing the "basic" ways to solve it as well. If you don't like that he "misses" something, then keep it to yourself.
This puzzle did not make me smile. This puzzle made me feel very stupid.
12:42 for me. It took me a couple minutes to spot the break-in, trickier than what I was expecting, but it did became pretty approachable from there. Nice puzzle!
55:49 for me
I had a little jumpscare when suddenly Simon appear on the whole screen....
Nah, straight away it's outside the realm of "Genuinely Approachable," as the video isn't 8 minutes long.
He really abandoned that 5 thing way too fast. You can get that all the renbands are extreme and the high/low-ness of them right off the bat.

Oooff. This one didn’t feel approachable.
I love how Simon's atrocious scanning makes me feel smart every once in a while. ;-)
Anyone else miss the SET puzzles? Or is it just me?
This was a cool puzzle, but it was NOT genuinely approachable. GAS puzzles typically take Mark 3 to 5 minutes, 7 at the outside. This took Simon over 20 minutes. And you couldn't make much progress, let alone solve it, unless you found an aha! breakin. GAS puzzles let start right away with very simple techniques.
wow took you 15 minutes to see Box 3 9+1+2>11
