- In part one of this medieval history series about the Hundred Years War, Kevin Hicks offers a simplified insight into the squabbles and family feuds that sparked the Hundred Years War. Actually lasting 116 years, this long war with its battles, sieges and skirmishes devastated France and left England impoverished and in a state of civil war.
In his unique style, Kevin explores the key players and tries to track back to who and what triggered one of the longest wars in history.

You know how to keep an audience Kevin, love your layman way of storytelling 🏹
Thanks Mick, appreciated. 👍🏻
@@thehistorysquad Credit where it’s due my man 🏹
Indeed! I subscribed as soon as I finished watching his telling of the Battle of Agincourt. I'm not British, my family has been here in America since we left Scotland in the mid-18th century, but even I got chills listening!
I wouldn't call it a layman's way of storytelling. Just very personable and charismatic.
He's not dry like many historians. Many historians aren't also great storytellers and actors.
Looking forward to the next episode with baited breath, you're a natural born storyteller sir
Thanks Shaun, appreciated 👍
The weirdest part is not that William the Conqueror or in some parts of the world called the Bastard, won the battle of Hastings but the fact that they took over the island pretty quickly.
Yes, it took 10 years to complete the entire conquest which really is incredible, it completely dispossessed the Saxons 👍🏻
Your channel is pure gold, I can’t stop to watch. The times in history where so hardcore that it first makes me realize what my ancestors had to deal with and second let me realize how good my life today is.
That's for sure, cheers for the comment 👍🏻
I think I learned more history from this channel than in school.
As an amateur historian I know all this stuff but you put it in a very straightforward way . Thank you . I will watch the rest of your videos .
That's kind of you Dave thanks, enjoy the vids 👍🏻
Nicely done. I live in Aquitaine and am surrounded by the history of the 100 years war. There is a village just 5Km from my home called St Jean D'Angle (St John of the English). Fascinating period in history.
I've never visited Aquitaine, though it looks a beautiful region. Yes, I absolutely love medieval history, particularly the warfare, but WW1 is also a passion. 👍🏻
Thanks for watching all these.
@@thehistorysquad that's interesting, I'm presently doing a project on the British retreat from Mons in 1914. I paint miniatures and actually smiled when you mentioned Perry's. I frequently receive packages from them. I have a load of Agincourt figures yet to paint. I'm also ex British Army (25 years).
@Matthew Dobbs Hey, what were you in? I was RMP.
I plan to do a WW1 series of videos at some point 👍🏻
@@thehistorysquad I was a gunner for my sins, but the last ten years I spent in staff appointments and J2. I finished in 2003. If you have an email I can send some pictures of the German 77mm artillery battery I have just finished. I am just basing the cavalry and infantry units. There's a lot to do, but it keeps me occupied. I must focus on the old contemptibles next, they are sadly lacking in troops (much like the real event) and the poor devil's are looking somewhat embattled on my wargames table. It's good to 'chat' with another soldier. My old RAF pal passed away a couple of years ago and I miss pulling up the old sandbag and swinging the lantern, so to speak. You stay safe over there!
@@gunner678 I served in NI in 1979 with 25, 27 and 5 heavy and my grandfather was RA, 8th army during WW2, I have a great respect for the gunners. I'd love to see some photos; my email address is historysquad@
Can’t wait to see this 100 years war coverage! What a huge party of English, British, and French history.
You are an excellent history teacher. Your accent, your clothing, your knowledge- brilliant!
Wow, thank you!
Living in Portsmouth. Its really interesting to know that the french burnt the Solent down. I know theres a bit of history down here with Titchfeild abbey and Porchester Castle but i learnt something i Never knew today so thank you ❤️
I wish you were my history teacher. This is great stuff. As for Sluys, I think it is pronounced the same as sluice. I could be mistaken, but that was how a Belgian priest once pronounced it for me.
Thanks Gilan, I'm gland you enjoyed the video & thanks for the help with the pronunciation, although I was filming part 2 yesterday, so my poor pronunciation may still appear 😜
Yeah it's important we know how to pronounce Sluys. I'd hate to live in a world where John of Gaunt wasn't born in Gaunt and pronounced Gaunt.
You’re an excellent communicator Mr. Hicks. I look forward to watching the rest of this series. Thanks very much.
Thank you kindly
Such an interesting century of the medieval era. Barbara Tuchman’s A Distant mirror the Calamitious 14th century is such a good book on it
👍🏻 Thanks for watching.
Great stuff. This is the background that Bernard Cornwell should have told us in his Grail quest series but kind of missed out.
Cheers Graham. I know Bernard Cornwell, he used me for some of his research for the Grail Quest 😉
Thanks Kevin taking us through a famous war that lasted a hundred years. What a Marvel... I have found the American Public cannot stomach a war beyond 4 years... Imagine a war lasting 25 times longer!!! Peace and Love, look forward to number two.
To be fair, the Hundred Years war had long periods of low intensity conflict because of treaties ans truces
this is indeed THE History Channel
Wow, that's kind, thanks Jorge 👍🏻
Ƿes þu hal!
Wow! That was over too soon.
You, Sir, are an engaging teller of tales.
I look forward to the next episode.
Be well.
Thank you very much!
I had a brilliant and wonderful history teacher. 1970’s Australia. He covered more than the curriculum. Thanks be.
You are just the same. Wonderful. 🇦🇺👍🏼
Oh wow!
I recently found your channel and you are awesome. You speak in a strange way, kinda like an old wanderer who tells stories. I loved the video of the arrow in the skull of the english prince.
Thanks and welcome 👍🏻
I look forward to this series you’re a great story teller
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks for watching.
Fantastic videos sir! I remember watching your older videos years ago. Most of them were recorded by spectators at the warwick castle. Glad to see you back. I missed the combination of humour and expertise. Greetings from Turkey!
That is awesome! Tesekkur ederim & keep watching 👍🏻
Wow, you’re an amazing storyteller! I appreciate the time and details you put into your channel. Thank you for making these videos, you’re a natural!
Thank you so much! There'll be lots more to come 👍🏻
That was honestly quite interesting. I'd never thought about how it began, but now that I do, I can't wait to learn more
Thanks! If you can spread the word I’d appreciate it. It was meeting with you today 👍
@@thehistorysquad I've actually already spread the word, and will continue to do so. It was awesome meeting you as well!
Please pardon my crude American English, but, that was kick-ass.
Detailed, yet not over-done.
Being from American, we, obviously don't have monarchies but they do fascinate me and provide centuries of fantastic documentaries, stories, and accounts.
Cheers! I hope you go onto enjoy the 100 years war series & my models 😜
@@thehistorysquad I think I'm on 8 or 9 and your models are top-notch Mr Hicks 👍
@@hadrianwall9157 Excellent, thanks.
OMG I’ve learned more about historical events in the last week than I did at school……you make it a lot more interesting than teachers in schools with books KUDOS !! Keep the videos coming 👌
Glad you like them Robert, thanks!
Hello,
since you ask how "Sluys" is pronounced, I am a Flemish, my roots being in Zelzate (a Belgian frontier town and which is close to Sluis, a Netherlands or Zeeland border town). Sluys is now written Sluis: you should pronounce the ui (or uy if you prefer) like the vowel in "bird", hurt" or "nerd". It is not entirely that sound, but it is close. It is not at all pronounced like you pronounce it (Slouizz like in "Louis"zz): a Dutch needs to read it then to understand it (LOL).
Thanks by the way for the lectures, enjoy them very much. Sincerely, Dirk.
Haha, thanks so much Dirk 😃, if I mention Sluis/ys again, I'll be sure to try and pronounce it better. So would that be Slurs perhaps?
Yeah this is quite right
You are an excellent story teller. I can see that there were some editing breaks. If this is because you tell a more detailed story, I would love to listen to you tell it. I'm sure many others would also.
Thanks for a great story and an entertaining way of learning
Hi Nathan thanks for your comment.
The reason for the breaks is that the films are all ad-libbed, I don't follow a script, I just have some crib notes to try and keep me on track. 👍🏻
There is more to this story that follows in part 2 (in the playlist)
I literally couldn't find this Man's videos! I spent 1 hour looking 😂 his story telling is so great! Worth looking through my search history. Underrated for sure. The algorithm isnt kind to this channel ...
Thanks Nyx, the Algorithm unfortunately is somewhat of a mystery, but hey, glad you found us at last. 👍🏻
Excellent presentation I always enjoy hearing History I've never been taught, Thank-you
You're welcome! Thanks for listening 👍🏻
Thank you Kevin,.....
Love it! I'm supposed to be writing my dissertation on this topic and you've explained it much better than the books can! :D
Excellent I'm so glad, thanks 👍🏻
So glad I found your channel. More, more!
Yes, more to come! 👍🏻
This is AWESOME!!! 👍👍👍
Brilliant! great roundup Kevin.
Well done, Kevin. Another really interesting video that you present so well. Can't wait for the next one.
Thanks so much 👍🏻
Parts 2 & 3 are available now and I'm just making some models for the Battle of Crecy which will be parts 4/5.

Looking forward to more in the series as usual Kev. You do have a way with storytelling!
Thanks a ton! Just editing episode 12 ready for Friday 👍🏻
Bell dinged! Thanks for a great channel!!
Thanks very much Aaron, appreciate it 👍🏻
Great video. I've always been interested in The Hundred Years Wars but never quite got round to looking into how it started.
Glad you enjoyed it! 👍🏻
Love this channel. I’m impressed that you have all the right gear for each era that you explain. 👍🇨🇦
I do try wherever I can 👍🏻
Noooooooo, I wanted it to keep going! 😄
Looking forward to part 2 Kevin.
😂
Very interesting as usual. I discovered Kevin Hicks' channel by accident (well, may be better to say by chance) and since love to watch it. May I say too that, though I'm French, I also love his so typical accent which is, in my opinion, the salt of these episodes ? Anyway, Kevin spoke here about Robert of Artois, he could make a whole episode about that fascinating guy who had a very important role in the beginning of the Hundred Years' War
Hi Kevin, thank you from Italy for your amazing videos! I don’t comment frequently on videos, but I wanted to say to you how much I appreciate your work! Have a nice day
Hi Mattia, thank you very much. I'm glad you like the content. My wife and I love Italy, such a beautiful country, we've visited several times 👍🏻
As a recent convert to your series, still catching up. King of England-Duke of Normany fealty to the French King identity crisis notwithstanting, I wonder how much the medieval tabliods would have salivated over reporting the scandal about one of the richest brides in the world dumping the King of France in order to marry the King of Engla
Yeah nice one 👍🏻
Love a good story. Thankyou.
My pleasure, thanks for watching 😉
Thank you for the explanation. This was as straightforward as I imagine it can be explained.
You're welcome! That's exactly what I was aiming for. It's so easy for people to get bogged down into the detail and minutiae. Thanks so much for watching 👍🏻
Awesome. Did not know a lot of this. Like the way Edward III paid "homage' to the French.🙂🙂🙂
For sure 😉
Love your videos.
Hi Karl, thanks so much for your SUPER, that's so kind of you. I'm very glad you're enjoying the videos and hope you continue to do so. Best, Kevin 👍🏻
If i had this kinda video in school history would have been awesome. Clear and precise information..not boring at all... love the channel..so thank you 👍🏽
Wow, thank you too 👍🏻
Now this is History Storytelling.
Thanks!
Hi Kevin. I just found your channel today. I've subscribed and now preparing myself for some binge-watching!
Hey, great to hear it & welcome aboard. I hope you enjoy 👍🏻
I also enjoy the way you conduct your videos. None of the computer graphics like every other CZcams video. It keeps me very entertained and educated at the same time. Thank you for your hard work and dedication!
You're welcome and thank you too 👍🏻
A nice clear account of the build up to the Hundred Years War, Kevin. I think your portraits were a brilliant way of showing us who the key players were.. Gosh, I have a lot of catching up to do with your splendid selection of films, but every one is packed with information and well worth viewing. Learning should be enjoyable and you provide the facts and time lines so expressively. We'll done sir!
Ah, cheers Pete!! As ever, thanks for watching 👍🏻
I'm going to be shooting another in this series tomorrow. The battle of Moraix.
Thanks passed Mr Hicks, excellent storytelling as usual. Appreciated.
Am back to 'Part 1' for a proper lesson after 'Part 9' the other day ;)

Enjoy!! I had fun making them
I love your channel your voice is kind if creepy and scary perfect for these stories :):)
Great exposition .
Cheers!
Thank you for sharing, it is good to know exactly how the hundred years war started, I knew that England had a claim to France but this cleared a lot up for me on how much and such.
You're welcome, glad it helped 👍🏻
oh god, i wish i had a history teacher like you. Thank you for this class!
You're very welcome! 😃
Still brilliant!!
Thank you
Very good. But perhaps the point should be made was that France was not the France we know today, it didn't really become that until Mary I lost Calais.
Excellent info, excellent presentation. Sign me up.
You're in! Cheers Mike.

Hello, I would recommend you the book “les rois maudits” (in english, literally, the accursed kings) from the author Maurice Druon, it’s mainly centered on the french side but it’s really interesting to read, it’s a little bit like Ken Follet’s style
greetings from France

Glad you think so! Cheers 👍🏻

Hey Kevin, just stumbled on this channel, incredible stuff. Could you add this video to the hundred years war playlist?
Hi Tim, welcome to the channel! I must have missed that, but have just added it to the playlist, thanks for the heads up. 👍🏻
Love the history hour great country England and like hearing the story’s about the battles thank you English history is the best
It sure is.
Love how you tell your tales, and the passion you have for history! Well done brother! Not bad for a Brit! 😂 love from America brother!!!!!!

Voy a comenzar a ver esta serie.

Very interesting. Thank you for reminding me of the history lessons that I had at school but have sadly forgotten. You are far more interesting than Mr. Williams, my history teacher on this subject ever was. And thank you also for not having an unnecessary and distracting background music track. Please don't succumb to that, just your fine voice is enough, it's perfect.
Hahaha, no - no music planned 😜

Love you videos i really like the medieval period and not just the fights and the weapons medieval life in general is very intresting will you be doing videos on the scottish wars of independence, as a lot of people watch and i hate to say this Braveheart and think they know all about it keep up the good work stay safe and keep your bow strings dry
LOL, thanks Scott!
I plan to do a piece on Neville's Cross for this Hundred Years War series, but the Scottish Wars of Independence is a great topic and one I'll definitely consider covering further down the line. 👍🏻
@@thehistorysquad funny you mention nevills cross ive just finished the second book in bernard cornwells grail series vagabond which featured this battle we (scots) under david The second had the english outnumberd the english i think it was nearly 2 to 1 lost the battle and had our king captured if i remember right
Proving that you don’t need fancy animation and graphics just a narrator who knows what there talking about

I know I'm late to the party, but it may be worth putting the hundred years war series into a playlist for youtube. As you continue to make content they may get quite buried beneath all the other videos. Otherwise, great content. I am glad there are channels like yours around.

According to “The Chronicle of Geoffrey Le Baker”, Edward was already planning to attack France when the Genoese attacked Southampton. King Edward was in Brabant at the time.
Will you do a piece abbot the Cheshire Archers please Kevin as I see you are waring their colours and Richards white hart badge.
Oooh, well spotted - you've uncovered a secret. As part of my ancestry of a Staffordshire lad, my Staffordshire family went right through Staffs into Cheshire and it's always a quiet, proud part of my own history.
I will for sure cover the Cheshire archers whenever I can, especially when I do the Battle of Shrewsbury, but I won't mention oatcakes 😜
