Neil… tire repair is becoming a lost art. A couple of years ago on Independence Day, my 9 year old grandson called me to ask if I could fix his bike. He said that it had a flat tire. He also said that his buddy down the road wanted to go biking down to the creek but, his dad told him he’d have to wait until the next day when the tire store was open.
So, I grabbed my cigar box of patches, tools and glue. When I arrived, he had the bike upside down in the driveway. He showed me the flat front tire and stepped back so that I could get to work.
Instead, I had him go get a Crescent wrench. When he tried to hand it to me I said, “You got this bud!”
From this point forward, I barely touched the tire or the bike. As I instructed him through removal of the tire, breakdown, tube extraction…. Every step through repair and replacement… I watched his self confidence rise. My favorite step was when he immersed the tube in the stock tank and followed the bubbles to find a thorn. When he finished he was so proud of himself that he couldn’t wait to mount up and go brag about it to his neighbor buddy!
For Christmas that year, he got his own cigar box of tire repair parts. He has since fixed several flats on his brothers, buddy’s and his own bicycles.
In a different interaction he had a rear tire that he fixed. When he put it back together it was rubbing. So, we had a lesson in chain tension and tire alignment. This was a lesson the neither his two older brothers or his father had ever mastered.
Neil, watching you and your dad repair that tube warmed my heart. It’s those simple things that bond generations together. And, in this video there were dozens of bonding adhesives shown.
Keep teaching those girls. These moments are memories they’ll always have.

Oh man I love hearing stories like this about your grandson. You most definitely planted a DIY seed in his spirit that day.
The bike tire repair reminds me of a story as well. One year we went camping with a bunch of family and the greatest joy for us kids was riding our bikes all throughout the camp ground. There was a particular hill that was by far the most fun, but it was in close proximity to a locust tree. Those thorns reaked havoc on all of our tires, but Dad setup a make shift tire shop back at the camper. He was patching tires all weekend because of that tree and we all got a lesson as we stood in line to wait on our repair. I had forgotten about that until you told your story!
It is most certainly the simple things that bond us together. Never thought it would be tire repair but as usual, you are on point!
Thanks for the reminder and as always thanks for watching!

@@digdrivediy his older brother is helping build himself a nightstand. We started it during the school holiday vacation. I got most of the remainder finished with a few short interludes of his help.
Next week he will be coming over to do the final assembly. I’ll post that video toward the end of the month. Although I could easily have finished the project in a couple of weeks… I don’t regret spreading it out until he has the chance to savor the finish. I can hardly wait to see him sign the back and take it home as his own!
It’s little things like this that keep your dad, you and me going despite the thorns we pick up along the way.

I can talk about her for hours like any parent - she is as close to a daughter I will ever have. In fact my and my brothers wills make her the beneficiary of a trust (since she is still a minor). I acquired a huge pile of rafts of 3x3 softwood timbers 8’ long that were used as shipping structure for tubular steel from eastern europe, and it was riddled with huge numbers of spikes. Since most of it was slated for firewood, I settled for breaking the rafts into blocks of 5 timbers each, and built a bench with an Evolution multi-material saw, and just cut through everything to end up with slabs for the wood stove. There’s a pound or two of nails to clean out with the ashes, but it beat the heck out of trying to split things apart and pound out the nails. Heated my home for the last two winters with them.

Cleanup looks great. I think it’s fantastic that you can give that swing set to a third hand. That’s great when you can pass things like that along.

The girls jumping off the swings and the flashback to them doing the same when they were younger reminded me of my daughter doing the same off a set almost exactly like this one. Broke her arm just above the wrist the day before 1st grade started. She didn’t want to go to school with a cast. She hid it under her jacket.

This was one of my favourite videos yet. Loved seeing you guys truck over to your brother’s as a family, with the girls driving. So much fun. Wishing you and your family all the best Neil.

Another thing to consider with what you put around the base of the bushes and trees is wood chips. You could grind up all the stumps and wood you moved across the street, and save the money on buying stones. It will give a different look and it’s great for holding moisture in the soil to help with growth. Something to consider

I grew up on a ranch in west Texas but have lived in NYC for the last 16 years. I love watching this channel bc watching you work makes me relax enough to go to sleep.
Back in TX, we had to get up VERY early some Saturdays and pick rocks out of the alfalfa fields and throw them in the back of Pappy’s pickup😅
Regarding Texas, some things I miss (power tools), some things I don’t (rocks).
ps I was unsubscribed after following you since the first pond video.
pss in Texas we call them “tanks” not “ponds”

The thing about Farm CZcamsrs in the Lost Colonies which still takes guys like me from across the Pond by surprise is the sheer size of the land. I think I mentioned it somewhere that in America, you drive for six hours, and you've just crossed a State line: in England, you drive for four hours, local people's accents change twice, and bread rolls have three different names. Like the ongoing life stories; keep up the good work.

So, if someone in your family moves more than three miles away are they shunned? 🤣
It's really nice to see that play set moving on to make memories for more kids, and the fact that it's staying in the family makes it even more awesome.

About nail removal. I take any scrap wood. What I have found that works best for me is to cut all the nails down to about 3/4 to one inch with a cutoff disc first. Then it's a lot easier to hammer them through. Then flip the board, and with a medium length bar it is also less of a length of nail to pull out.
