After a few decades of being obsessed with collecting survival and primitive skills techniques, I am putting out these videos to demonstrate the skills and excursions found at my school, Wild Survival (wildsurvivalskills.com). Videos are focused on primitive skills, rewilding, nature awareness, living off the land, off grid living, indigenous skills, shelter building, primitive fire, water purification, trapping, hunting, bow making, flint knapping, primitive pottery, basketry, edible and medicinal plant preparation and numerous indigenous skills.
I began studying wilderness survival when I was 17 in order to have the ability to spend extensive periods of time in nature, seeking out empowerment and without the need for external sources. I began studying in 1993 under Tom Brown Jr eventually teaching for Tracker Inc. I sought-out every old Native American teacher I could and eventually traveled the world living in very remote indigenous villages in the Amazon, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Peru. My school teaches survival and primitive skills, nature awareness, how to live off the land, re-wilding, prepare for disasters. I strongly believe that experiencing survival living changes the way people approach their entire lives.
I am a big survival buff and this is a first time seeing this. absolutely amazing bud.
That was quite slick, and seems fairly easy to do for a good solid basket/container.
I'm watching survival in the forest videos, just in case my mom kicks me out of the house and have nowhere to go😂
That basket is probably better than my actual backpack
Love it!!
nice one!
That's so cool, I'm going to go out and make one maybe 2 or 3! Thank you new sub and I love your channel!
Awesome!
I actually like this one? wow cool.
sweet!
Don't forget to trim one side down on the overlapping edge to allow room for the stitching. I learned that watching your other videos.
So does this bark need to still be green to bend like that? Was the tree freshly felled, or do you find a tree that's been down for a while and the bark is starting to separate from the wood?
Those chunks of bark would be great for a shelter
yea and as roofing tiles
was that a live tree? can this only be done with green wood?
Very clever.
WOW NICE BASKET ;)) However it will be kind of heavy to lug around ;))
Seems like one could use this technique to craft a quick fish trap basket?
Where did you cut the slites? I can't really see it.
Hi Tom, any chance you sell these? Ive tried to make them where I live for my cabin- but we just don't have right type of bark where I am. Thanks
Hey, I dont sell them. What area do you live, there are lots of other barks that works pretty well.
Thanks for the reply Tom. I am in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Should this be done in the summer when the bark is less frozen?
Doing it with frozen bark is probably your problem. Any poplar or oak should work for this. I've even seen it done with pine. You just gotta be really patient and delicate.
I want to tell you how incredibly excited I got to learn that you could do a basket from bark. do you think I could make a bark basket now that it's turning full? Or is this something you think you should really just leave towards doing in the spring and early summer?
I would wait until May, it should peel off easy then, its too late in the year now and it will stick to the tree in fall
Would this be good for rabbits when I go hunting hmm..
You hunt Wabbits?
Works great for carrying french fries
I never saw that before...now I will never un-see it. Next survival situation Ill be digging deep trying to find that one last missing french fry
Tom McElroy-Wild Survival...I've been watching Ur vids for a few months now- really impressed with Ur knowledge & skills used. It hit me where I've seen U...Naked & Afraid! Probably not one of Ur prouder accomplishments, because these YT vids showcase some serious skills. So glad I found these vids...hope to see some new vids. Good stuff from Tennessee/survivalist & fellow live off the land. I can catch, skin, & cook small & large game...fish,& grow most everything I eat. I can & freeze almost everything that I don't can...dehydrate everything else. Tom...appreciate Ur vids & sharing Ur knowledge.
I was thinking giant apple pie!
Bushcraft origami anyone?
TurtleWolf Pack whaa
A basket is NOT essential. LOL Its just fun to know.
