What Does 21 Days of Nothing but Junk Food Do to these Celebrities? | Only Human

  • Celebrity guinea pigs undergo an extreme junk food eating regime in a groundbreaking experiment.
Singer Peter Andre, The Chase mastermind and barrister Shaun Wallace, politician Nadine Dorries, actress Hayley Tamaddon, Olympian Tessa Sanderson and TV personality Hugo Taylor have bravely given their bodies over to science to take part in an overfeeding study used by scientists to understand exactly how food can affect our bodies.
Britain is a nation hooked on fast food. We consume 22 million takeaway meals every week and fast food joints are dominating high streets across Britain. n this program, six famous faces have agreed to put their bodies on the line and become guinea pigs in an extreme scientific experiment to find out what our junk food lifestyle is actually doing to us.
For 21 days the celebs will be overeating burgers, fried chicken and pizza - Britain’s top three favourite junk foods - for lunch and dinner. The volunteers will each spend a week eating burgers, a week eating chicken and a week eating pizza and by subjecting them to a large increase in calories - 50% more than they need - over a short period of time, the effect on their bodies could mimic that of long term consumption.

I am an experiment with healthy food. I am a 65 year old grandma with a pain issue from an old injury. Doctors did not help, just gave me drugs. I went on a whole foods plant based vegan diet. Pain is greatly reduced, losing weight, feel great each day, doctor says I am very healthy, dentist says my teeth are great, don't get sick anymore, life is worth living again. I highly recommend it.

Hugo saying it's easier than ever to eat healthily in the UK and then names expensive fruits "avocado" and "dragon fruit" - this is exactly why so many people think eating healthily is too expensive, you don't need fancy exotic foods - you can buy typical fruit, veg and wholegrains for very cheap, especially if you shop in lidl, aldi or Iceland. Most supermarkets do a wonky veg box, which are great value and a great way to try things you wouldn't usually buy. You can buy frozen veg and fruit for lazy days. I eat a very healthy diet and spend no more than £15 a week on a food shop (I'm a single person, so you could spend even less than that per person in a family or couple)

Hugo should be checked for orthorexia. He's been exposed to clean eating his entire life and the mere idea of pizza gave him anxiety. One meal in and he had a full-blown panic attack.
I like the guy, I always liked him on Made In Chelsea, but panicking over eating pizza (major props to him for pushing through it for an entire week) is not normal. There's a big difference between being reluctant bc you know something is unhealthy, and having a reaction like Hugo did.
Not a doctor, not a nurse, not trained in psychology, it was just something that struck me when I saw Hugo's reactions towards the food.
Edit: I wrote this comment years ago, and have rewatched this documentary a few times. I don't agree with this comment anymore, but it continues to generate a decent dialog in the replies, and I do not want to delete the thoughts of others. And, as we can see in the video, even mild cases cause distress at eating anything "wrong" or "dirty". Well, they only ate junk food and to be honest some of their conclusions were exagerated and the tests were not exactly scientific and correctly performed. The idea behind the TV show was great, but the way it was realised not that much. For instance, the 3 kg Peter gained are most likely due to water retention due to the huge amounts of salt in the diet and not due to fat on the organs. 3 kg of fat is too much fat to be gained in 3 weeks. Part of it is fat, but the most part is water. That is also why people tend to lose a lot of weight in the first week of a healthy diet, water loss. And this was only one of the questionable statements/results.

Doing this experiment with IBS is like giving a peanut to someone with a peanut allergy and being shocked at the reaction. Unethical for the producers to sign off on it.

I'd be interested in learning what type of oil is used in the deep frying of the takeaway consumed?
What is their carb consumption as they mentioned sugar intake but heard nothing about how carbs convert to glucose in the body.
To see their insulin levels would say a lot.

Brilliant documentary! I am so glad that I saw through this video the real damage that junk food causes to our health. Real motivation to cultivate better eating habits.

Is NO ONE going to talk about how they consumed 50% more calories than they needed?
Also, wouldn't it be way more interesting if the amount of macros (protein, fats, carbohydrates) they had in this experiment were roughly the recommended amount?

    • @KeepingOnTheWatch
      @KeepingOnTheWatch Před 2 lety +4

Agreed. Your conditions suggested might make for a better, or more interesting, experiment. However, what I got out of watching this is that 1. rarely does anyone consume ‘junk food’ in the proper amounts needed and 2. this type of food is addictive making it more difficult to be balanced.

Everyone is complaining about how Hugo is annoying/weak, but to me he actually seems pretty rational? I don't think he deserves as much criticism as he's getting for pulling out of the experiment to protect his mental health. He never really complained on camera, he consulted a psychiatrist before pulling out, and he was very apologetic when leaving. Anxiety/mental issues surrounding food are hard to deal with, and he's not weak or annoying for realizing this could be bad for him.

He's annoying because of how pretentious he was. How he talked about being so "selfless" and doing the experiment out of the good ness of his cold little heart. And yeah, he also complained way too much, he probably had an ED tbh. It's not healthy or normal to panic and have anxiety attacks at the sight or thought of eating something unhealthy.

This emphasizes that diet is a core factor of human life. I wish more clinical trials are being done about the benefits of fruits and vegetables for us to not be so dependent on capsuled vitamins and pharmaceutical drugs worth thousands. Human body is very intelligent in its own ways given its supplied by right exercise and right food.

Sounds like you're doing better that I did. I did a five day water fast and was watching people eating on CZcams between staring at my husband (along with our dog) every bite he took, as a type of torture. I was obsessed, even the sound of chewing drew me in! People says it gets easier after day 3 but it just got worse!

Ive worked in a diner for a few years, barely ate the food. After awhile i just couldn't stand the oily smell, touch of the grease, or having than mess in your mouth and into your stomach. Meats were fried, oily, salty. Vegetables were either bland or buttery. Soups were salty.
