I think the Martian campaign of this game is very fitting for the Martians. Strangely enough, in a dream I had last Sunday night, I played through the Martian campaign and because I'd decided to take the campaign a bit more seriously, I managed to barely beat the Martian campaign. By the way, my family's youngest cat sometimes turns out to be too impossible for the Martians to drain blood from even though she's an animal. So her name's Owlwin (named after the female elf archer in Lord of the Rings) in case anyone was wondering and she's on top of my old stack of stackable toy boxes at the moment, being what I like to call a 'Purry Loaf of Cuteness'.
I cant stop replaying the intro cutscene enough! I LOVE Richard burtons voice! They picked the right person for voice acting!

Funny thing about this - I'm actually thinking of improvising with the human campaign and using it to help me write a story or something.
It's good to hear the story from the aliens perspective
Funny enough if not for the martians invading earth and drinking our blood you could sympathise with them if not for those two factors. I mean they did this out of desperation and only near the end did they invade Earth and even then it seemed like a choice they did not want to do at all. Very peaceful when compared to what they seem like from a Human only POV.

Maybe if the Martians had tried using diplomacy, we could have worked out some sort of deal - i.e. trade some of our resources for their technology.
@@ArmyJames but they had seen the humans as inferior and called us animals, so they would probably not be willing to trade for they see us as cattle or pets

Did you know that the Martian Intro of the game was re-used in the live performances of the album?
I didn't, I should ask my dad cause he went a few years ago and it was his game that I played back in the day.
It is quite interesting how one scene managed to become a 'canon immigrant' as they call it. XD
@@CRACKBONE7317 They started doing live shows in 2006, this was released in 1998. Album released in 1978.

I love that aliens use HUMAN BLOOD as a resource. So delightfully grim.
Fact about this game - I watched two videos showcasing all the Martian units, buildings and defences. Heat ray turrets can actually be useful because they can fire heat rays at the ongoing armies of human defences.
When the unabridged version is 5 audio CDs, LOL, you know the story's BIG! The Martian politics, the whole reason they went to Earth when they would not if they didn't have to, etc. And for once, a game written using the music from Jeff Wayne's production, best move ever.
THE TWO GAMES NEED TO BE REMASTERED AS THEY ARE CLASSIC'S

I just found the Martian disc in an old box in the cupboard and came here to see if anyone on CZcams remembered the game. Glad there’s a few play throughs up, such a shame this is abandonware. It’s a solid and fun RTS

When i played this game on my old-old-old computer i didn't have the soundtrack either.
Then i realised that you need 2 disc drives.
The martian soundtrack is on the human disc and vice versa.
If you play martian and want to have music, you need to have the human disc in the secondary drive to get in-game music.
Imay have had an old version of the game.
To answer the question about human blood. The Martians don't have a digestive system, so for nourishment, they take the blood of other creatures and inject it into their veins. Not sure how that nourishes them but it seems to work so it'd be logical that they take the blood of humans for food. And why they don't die of the bacteria from the blood in this game? Well, my best guest is just for the sake of playing the game, otherwise you'd lose after 20 days, or Earth cycles.
That sounds right to me seen as on the films (old and new) they die of the common cold or something? Thanks for the share by the way! Appreciate it! :)
Well they didn't have an immune system because all the micro organism on Mars were destroyed so they have no biological defense. It's no wonder common bacteria killed them.

They could ask Mars to develop a cure at the first sign of the disease, and continue to conquer.
@@DobinSergei Well they do not have that type of space tech they can only send pods on one way trips no spaceships. so they could not send back samples for testing nor would they risk it.

Interesting gameplay. In enemy sectors where a Handling Machines arrives with the Scout Machines, I have a tendency to let the Handling Machine join in on the assault against the Command Post too. :)
I've just ordered a copy of this from Amazon. With hopes I can get it working on a modern machine. My god did I love this game back in't day. I was a whole lot younger (probably about 7-8 at the time) so spent days sat at my old mans side watching him play the human campaign for hours.
Looking back on it. The graphics have aged incredibly well considering how old this game is. Was always disappointed that I never got to see dad finish the martian campaign though so cheers for the lets play mate and hopefully it should tide me over until the parcel arrives.
Further more, as I'm such a fan of the series, I've went a head and built my own martian war machine using Blender 3D which I hope to post on my channel this weekend.

I only get the game working on windows XP with a modified exe file. but i still get the "no progress after winning a match" bug.. any infos?

My purr-balls love repeatedly beating their enemies to a pulp when they purr. One time they repeatedly beat the Martians to a pulp.
Does anyone know how to get this game nowadays? I'm a huge fan of the book and the musical and have never had the opportunity to play the game because I wasn't aware of it until 2016...
Fraser you can get it on abandonia.com now although I have struggled to get the music working on it sadly. There is a step by step guide to download and set it up but if I remember rightly the music section doesn't work, you may have more joy.
These vids were done on the original disc on windows 7 and I couldn't get the music to work on this playthrough either, which was a massive shame, I wont lie.
Never knew why did the martians not just land in an unoccupied bit of earth like the antarctic and live there and not kill mankind. Hell they could trade for human blood as well, there knowledge even just for peaceful means would b worth the trade. Or i am sure a major nation could arrange some bit of land to let them settle in.

The Martians likely do not want to risk it.- Basically, they’re scared of humans and terrified. So, they decided to attempt wiping them out and harvesting them.

@@TGM_Productions Maybe, but i do remember the people of Mars where so desperate for a solution now that they killed one of their leaders with a psychic attack thing. He is the Martian bleeding in the middle of the room.

Maybe, they just didn’t have time to act- to establish communications with humans and quickly opted to immediately invade.
The only thing the Martians would be terrified of would be the flame Super Tigress can emit when doing anything at all, even though it's a rainbow. Any time a heat ray was fired, it would bounce back and hit the attackers in the face.

I like the alternative design for the martian taxi! Who voiced the martians? Is there a way I could find some of his voice lines?
You only need power plants for fences, (which are useless for the martians) turrets don't need them.

@@GeeW365 hey I forgot to ask all those years ago, how are you even running this on Windows? I could never get this game to run on anything past XP (with a patched game .exe), unless you're using linux.
I LOVED playing this game when i was a kid, got it for christmas 98, i was 13. it was one of, if not the first pc game i played that had 3d graphics. This game SO needs to be remade in a modern engine (and i mean this strategy game, not that god awful FPS shooter they made for PS1)
And when it comes to resource management, i always built as many of each plant as i could, until the output for each type dropped to about 2.5 units/day (and considering it drops by 50% per building, for 40/day for HE in a particular sector lets say, that'd be about 5 HE facilities or so, at least i think that's how i did it.
One thing i did hate was the advantages the AI got, such as unlimited number of ships in any costal sectors (some can only have 1 ship when playing as humans, yet as the martians, there were times i was fighting off 9 ships in Galloway)
The game is much harder when playing the martians than the humans even though the martian units are stronger. The setup with the martians is really random and if you get unlucky with how the pods land you can be screwed very hard. I had to restart many times in order to get good landings.
No its harder to start as the humans i all ways thought .. Wish these were remade with today's graphic's

They do so at great cost in the films. but what you say does make sense with regards injecting because they don't have mouths so that would be the only way I would guess! Thanks for the Comment! :)
