    Hello, this was a very informative video. I just had one thing that I didn't hear or see you do, when you took off the vvti cam gear there are those 5 10mm bolts. If you where to take them off you could see there is a o ring that is notorious to get dry and start leaking. The dealer will not sell you the o ring but will sell you a new gear with a new o ring in it. There are aftermarket shops that sell that o ring and way cheaper then getting the gear. Just wanted to say because thats what I had to do and I had oil all over the engine bay like this is300 did.

    One thing to mention. The VVTi gear on the intake cam has an o-ring inside of it that when dried out and cracked causes the sprocket to leak oil inside the timing cover. A lot of people overlook it and assume its cam seals or the front main crank seal. Your options are to replace the sprocket or rebuild it. Toyota doesn't want you to rebuild it and therfore doesn't have a rebuild procedure in the service manual but there are how to videos on the subject and the seal can be sourced from the aftermarket.

      @Beacon_Offroad  Před rokem +4

      Absolutely. This is a great point. About 1 month ago, we diagnosed a car with the exact issue you're point out. If anyone reads this, dont be fooled by this. You can actually run the engine with the cover off and see if it flings the oil out.

    Great video but using the dots on the cam gear is not TDC on #1. You need to use the hash mark on the cams, I believe it’s roughly 30 degrees apart from the white dot.
    The balancer actually has 2 white lines on it, if you line up with the hash mark you’ll see the second white line on the balancer line up. An easy way to tell on a 2J is at TDC for #1 the key ways will be at the 12 o’clock position and the cams will have the dowel pins at 12 o’clock.
    Great video tho. Very informative!!

    The belt retaining collar behind the timin belt lower cover. Does that float around? I know on the 2jzgte engine there are four open slots that fit through that one tab on the crank. And the curved side faces out and flat side faces the belt.
    With the lower cover on, that metal retaining collar freely spins and doesn’t seat in the protruding metal tab off the crank is that right?

      you did the right thing by aligning the lines and not the dots on the cams and the timing gear down below, if its conking out something else must be wrong.. double check those marks (i know alot of work to do) rotate the engine about two times and verify alignment, then if that all checks out its something else... maf, spark plug wires maybe put wrong, fuel, or something isnt plugged in (sensor) etc... but if the lines on the timing are not right it will run bad... the toyota shop manual says its the lines... also on the harmonic balancer you dont use the first line at 0 deg... its the second line the (line to the left) that you put at 0 deg... it also says only to rotate the engine "clockwise", this video used the first line which is not how the manual says to do it.. if so the engine will be 30 deg off on the timing.. peace
