    It happens to all of us. I had a team of three individuals, two of my garden club friends and my daughter, who is not a gardener, taking turns watering. Had my vegetable garden hooked up with an overhead sprinkler that went off at night for an hour, game changer. And trays that are a few inches deep with all my topiaries and plants that could not dry out. There was one casualty, and I am very happy there weren't hundreds. Its hard for a gardener to leave her yard, those are her babies. And the hours we spend out there are worth it to us, but we have a hard time leaving all that work to our trusted few. We had our hottest week last week, 90's and a few 100 degree days. Unheard of here in mid-atlantic. And to boot no rain, very unusual. So Leah, I think you are doing great. Linda is lucky to have you, and Stewart!

    Your commentary, Leah, and Stewart's comments with giggles made this so fun. Things are looking good, minus the poor moss planter, of course. It has been crazy hot weather to keep everything going. The plant that is "growing like crazy"in the front yard is a dahlia.

When I go away, (usually no more than 1week) I’m biting my nails hoping my waterer, usually my Hubs, will hand water and not just rely on our irrigation system. A watering tip for things in pots that are not doing well is to put them in a big bucket of water en let the dirt get really wet. Because if te dirt is dried out, the water is not absorbed en runs out the pot. Linda, has good luck in Europe she is there in the one week we had sun, the rain is back. Leah an Stewart you are a fun team. And Leah and Stewart garding is a learning process, just enjoy the lessons. They happen to all of us.

    Leah- overwatering a plant is just as harmful as under watering. Rule of thumb- if the soil is damp/moist to the touch, it doesn't need more water. In the summer, some plants need to be checked more than once a day depending on the container type and plant moisture need (myrtle topiaries are very high maintenance when it's hot). Otherwise, you're getting the hang of it. I would be grateful to have someone like you to babysit my plants when I'm away. A good plant sitter is as hard to find as a reliable baby sitter.

    I completely agree - irrigate at roots via a zoned drip irrigation system is efficient and effective- it is well worth the time, effort, investment But if you are thinking of starting a new garden in an area that gets increasingly hot and dry in the summer I would consider leaning on plants in your design that can take a dry spell..

    Ah.... good effort Leah! It's not easy when you are not a gardener and it's not your own garden..So very sorry for the plant funerals.... But, there's a reason Linda drags the hose down the front steps .....that pot near the sidewalk needed ..minimum, the whole content of that watering can and then some.... If a pot is drying out too fast in it's sunny location, drag it into the shade , under the table , anywhere to give it a break...There's always a next time😉 and you were very kind to water for Linda.

    Bunny Guinness uses bottomless pots (pots with bottoms removed) so that larger plants/trees/boxeoods can establish their roots in the soil and reduces watering needs after they are established. I might try that.

    🌿💗 I've lost two struggling plants this week (one of five of my sibella carmine from seed) and an erinus alpinus from the nursery and I'm managing the disappointment well. However, the one I nursed from seed stings a bit. My only solace is that it did start struggling before I put it in the ground and I still don't know if it was overwatered or underwatered. By the way, this was a great installment team. 💗🌿

    Leah actually knowledge comes with age and you will learn that as you become more involved (if you do) in the gardening experience. That concrete basket in front that you are drenching...do you know if it has drainage? You may be OVER watering. If those are begonias in the back that you are watering that are all soggy, it is possible to overwater begonias because the stems are full of water

    • @jondebbiegraff6492
      @jondebbiegraff6492 Před 5 dny

  • @horticultureandhomes
    @horticultureandhomes Před 2 dny

    Linda you should have shown her and then have her do the watering about 3 times bwfore you left. Show her how to stick her finger in the soil to see how much soil moisture there is in the pot. I bet most of those pots were dry to the point of runoff that it couldn't absorb what little water they did get. Those front pots should have had the entire water can per each of those pots instead of the dribble they actually got. I leaned long ago fron plantsmen Andrea Viette that whoever is in charge of watering should be one of the highest paid people in the nusery.

Where I'm having to save for a watering system and I am liking both the drip irrigation as well as the sprinkler system and hand watering. As well but I'm having a hard time knowing which areas or zones need. What.and i'm not sure whether a installation group would know.

My Eugenia Topiaries are moved into part shade so they don’t get burned up.
