- This is a quick do-it-yourself hack for making your headphones just a little more comfortable by making the padding feel thicker. This is specifically for the Sony MDR-7506 headphones, but could work for any similar headphones.
4-5 years later and you are still a hero. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Glad you liked it.

I have these exact headphones and I'm so glad this video exists. Going to give it a shot. Thanks :)
You've helped me big time. Thank you stranger!
Wow this is so amazing my shure srh 750dj feel so muvh better now. Thanks for uploading man
I did it with an ethernet cable lol thanks for the mod
That was clever! (and it can work with most of headphones), thanks :D
YOU'RE AMAZING!!
just tried this with my mdr-v700 dj headphones. amazing results. I cut up soft squishy material from slippers I was throwing out to put inside instead of rope, because I wanted the soft cushion. and my ear felt cramped at first, so i used 2 inch long strands to reinforce the sides and my ear fits under the original pad at the top and bottom. feels like my ear is free and open. awesome. thank you so much
Wow just tried this on my Sony WH-1000XM3 and it worked perfectly! Thank you so much!
Great to hear!
Thanks for the vid! I had a problem where my ear was touching the speaker inside the headset and this trick has helped me solve the issue!
Glad it helped!
great video, helped me a lot, thx man :)
Thank you so much!!! I'm gonna do this with my MDR-V55's :)
Great! I'll try this on my Sennheiser 280s. Simple, efficient, cheap. Love it!
Tried it with my razer kraken 7.1 headphones works amazingly.
10/10
Using your idea with sheepskin leather pads, isolates better, Fantastic, Thanks
holy crap your a life savor
You're smart, man
Thank you so much
Me in my room by myself taping foam to my headset band: "OOOOOH SHIT DUDE THIS GUY'S A GENIUS!"
My neighbors: Calm down Kevin -_-
Weather stripping works great in those earpads!
saved me so much ear pain, thank you
You're so welcome!
Immediate ear pain relief! Thank you sir!
Glad to help!
Dude I can't thank you enough. Feel like a dumbass for not thinking of this myself. Did it with a DVI cable lol
Perfect! Those DVI cables are going the way of the world anyway :-)
Wow just what i needed. My fav pair was crushed and no they are more comfortable . thanks.
Wow this worked! Thank you!
Glad it worked!
Yes Yes! Much needed tip! Ty 🙏🏻
You are so welcome!
Wow! This really works! Now my Sony V55s don't give me a headache.
Good call TheOnlySoni! It would be great to try those out sometime; they seem like they would work.
I used a spare set of audio technica m50 earpads. Sound and comfort is fantastic.
Are Audio Technica M50X'pads compatible with these sonys? I noticed the Audio Technica are "stiffer" and "deeper".
Brilliant!
awesome~~~ it worked~~~~
Now this is why youtube exists. Paper towel works flawlessly!
Right? I hate paying extra for stuff made inadequately.
Good lesson, thank you
Thanks for watching!
Yep legit! Nice video! I took Mikel's lead and did it with an ethernet cable since I had an extra one. It helps a ton! I think I will do it with rope or something softer when I get it. I might use a slightly thinner rope though
You need to update your title and add the Sony MDR-7510 this solved my problem and there is no after market ear pads for these useless things, I can't believe Sony would sell a $150 USD headphones and the foam is so soft that the hard plastic inside rubs against your ears and hurts like hell after a while.
Wasted a couple hours trying to find aftermarket deeper pads but they don't make them for the 7510, but your idea seems to work except I had to use thicker rope to get the hard plastic away from my ears.
Thanks for posting the video you saved me $65 Canadian with postage to order something hoping I could make it work, my only other option was return the headphones and get the next model down and then buy the aftermarket pads.
BTW I watched the ad for you and it was a premium skippable auction ad so you got my 2 cents worth
Amazing! I wonder how many headphones I went through trying to find ones that didnt hurt when all I needed was this. Works with HDMI cables btw
Glad it worked!
hm well I don't have rope but I do have HDMI cables...
Worked flawlessly on Sennheiser HD 280 Pros. I was about to cough up $25 for a third-party set of thicker ear pads to replace the brand new original pads, because my ears pressed against the inside of the headphones. Serious thanks for the creative suggestion.
Are you still using this mod 7 years later on your HD 280? Im thinking about doing these to my audio technica since they are very unconfortable
cool trick 👍
Thanks!
Man thank god I found this video, it makes wearing the corsair virtuoso actually bearable, thank you so much for this upload! A little toilet paper did the trick just fine
Glad I could help!
yip did the trick thanks sir
You're welcome!
who is watching this with headphones?
Just modded my Koss ProDJ100s with larger pleather pads made for Shure and Audio Technica models. Much better circumference now but the slightly softer foam has my left ear barely touching the baffle.
I'm going to try making them deeper with Frost King 3/8" Backer Rod you can get at Lowes for $2.50. It's round foam weather stripping. Should do the trick and still be cush.
You have an amazing voice and diction! It feels like I'm listing to a book. Do you have any tips about improving the voice and diction? Thx.
did u just come?
So did your voice/diction improved 6 years later?
Awesome!
Thanks so much! My MDR-7506's are easily 10x more comfortable now.
Just a quick FYI on what worked perfectly for me:
I used 3/16" (4.75mm) nylon rope and cut two pieces, each measuring exactly 9.5" (24.13cm) in length.
Then I burned the ends (only burn the ends of the rope if you are using rope made from synthetic material like nylon, polyethylene, polyester, polypropylene, etc.).
Worked for my philips sdh 7150 :D
Thanks sooo much. Does this improve sound quality a bid because of the more space for the sound to move in
Dude, that's so stupidly easy but didn't passed for my head.
Thought you were mad at first......you can see the string what's he doing!!! But it made a huge difference...genius
I like this, "cause I like it!
I used a silicon tube used for aquariums, cause it's softer than rope, but still retains its shape
Its amazing how to me and a lot of people these are the clearest sounding headphone they have tried considering that they were first made in 1991 HAHAHA. I have tried so many headphones and ear buds out their and even with some custom equalization settings these are the clearest. These are great for audiophiles who don't want extreme bass. You need to make them more comfortable if you want your ears not to hurt from wearing these for a long time and this is a great easy trick to make them more comfortable. BTW if you want true high quality audio use Vox player on a computer instead of iTunes. Vox player plays stuff way way way more clear than iTunes plus the equalizer plus audio units can make it sound amazing. I would not recommend using these in public and use for home only though because they leak so much sound and you should find some with less sound leakage for use outside your house.
Damn it! I already sold my mdr-1r
after watching this video I put a network cable around the inside of the ear cups of my Sony MDR-1RBTs and it worked fine, and it's free, better than the Chinese replacement pads
Thank you. I was getting ear pain from my mpow ae headset
Yeah that is frustrating isn't it! Hope you found a solution!
I did this, but with a slightly thinner string, and you barely even notice the string inside. Thanks for the tip.
use tp it works great and better than rope cause you can add as much as you need
Bro there's legit companies making big bucks selling third party thicker earpads and you just solve the problem by using rope. Fucking genius.
Yeah why pay a company when you can fix it yourself, right?!
That's fantastic news
Thanks!
You're welcome,I did this trick two years ago after watching your video and my 7506s are super comfortable. I wear my headphones alot because I play Roland E drums.
Day may come you can find it online
Sony doesn't but eBay has valour pads for MDR 7506
PS U ROCK DEFINATELY WORKED EARNED A SUBB
brillant. my mdr-v6 rubs against my ears and it hurts. going to try this out.
omg this works great on my ~$35 sheepskin replacement ear pads, the plastic is no longer rubbing on and hurting my ears.
the original ear pads will eventually disintegrate, a quality sheepskin replacement is a good choice IMO.
also be careful about buying extra thick replacement pads. other people online have said that they degrade the sound/volume too much.
@@tt2362 Are you still using the rope inside your MDR-V6? You still recommend it after all these years?
@@francohic yes. definitely works. my rope is still in my V6 but I don't use the headphones much anymore.
@@tt2362 thanks for the advice. I put some rope insode mine today. Hope it will make them more confy
thanks but you don't mention whether this changes sound quality. does it?
that is might pressure the speakers so it could change the sound
smartass
Benjamin Alexanders your the dumbass
I didn't have rope so I used paper towel. Roll one of those clothe type paper tower to right length and it works perfect.
Great idea!
i dit it with toilet paper, my ears said thank u
For people with big ears it's hell to find the right ear pads..
Чувак, ты лучший!
I used weather stripping 1 1/2" x 5/8 cut in half
Excellent choice! I have since used that. Much more comfortable.
In my opinion this mod have very little to do with better comfort and a lot to do with better sound stage as there is now more space between ear and driver. At least this was a result for my on Superlux HD330 +beyerdynamic velor pads.
This mod has very much to do with comfort when it comes to people with bigger ears who needs more depth to the pads
Thank you amazing advice. But for the love of all that is holy sort out those mouth clicks! I had to turn captions on. Dear god. That made my freakin head explode. EVERY WORD had constant mouth swishing! Back tf up from the mic!
But yea thank you Ima do this.
Sorry! Quick video..missed that part. Thanks for the feedback.
Nice, kind of a 'cheat', but cute...
There are a number of aftermarket ear pad replacements available for the V6's and 7506's that are thicker and more comfortable. They sell for anywhere from $20 to the $35 genuine sheepskin leather pads. While this ghetto mod may work temporarily, I'd start saving to get the real thing.
Google "ear pads for mdr 7506".
Beyerdynamics makes some good pads that are reasonably priced.
BigRalphSmith Yea I'd love to replace my earpads, but with mixed reviews, it's hard to tell if replacement earpads will actually be more comfortable or not. And $30 seems pretty steep for pads if you ask me (1/3 cost of the headphones).
Bob Ross........???
those pads hurt. there are oem's who make pads though.
Add extra padding at low extra cost!
im deperate im trying this
I hope it worked!
Bruh
Sony seems to make uncomfortable headphones. All of these types of videos are on sonys. My Sony headphones are also very uncomfortable
+NJMoo3652 the inside rubs against your ears, terrible cheap foam in a $160 MDR-7510 pair of headphones
