Being a father of 4, two at the time of initial release, this game definitely confirmed I still had feelings. Even playing through the second and third time, I'd find myself crying at least 3 times throughout the game.

There is certain moments in media where no matter how many times I see it I get goosebumps. Examples being Breaking Bads ending, Red Dead 2s ending, and this intro. The cut to the music and credits is just absolutely incredible
it is easily the most effective intro i've ever seen. But the examples you listed are all spot on.
Gustavo Santaolalla is incredible. Who may say that the intro is a chacarera, an argentinian folklore. Lol. If someone would told me years ago that an argentinian theme is the intro of a post apocalyptic game, I wouldn't know what to say.

That grunt Sarah does when Joel tries to pick her up always gets me. That’s the grunt an adult who is capable of dealing with that amount of pain makes, not a grunt a child with pain should be making. Always disturbs me.
as a physical therapist let me just say that plenty of adults can't handle pain "like men".... and some young kids can tough out very painful things without crying or screaming

Here after watching last of us, the TV show. And possible to say that the intro of the game to show is one to one. Amazing!
One of my favourite games ever. I played this game when my daughter is Sarah’s age. This scene horrified me and my hands was trembling and I had to pause the game, ran to kiss my daughter on her forehead and whispered I love her, even though she was just sleeping.
I can’t imagine how mind blown people must have been playing this game for the first time in 2013. This must have been absolutely jaw dropping. Everything, the graphics, the music, the acting, the dialogue, the writing.

Man I remember going into this game expecting just a good post apocalypse survival type of story, not to have my soul crushed right off the bat lol this was easily one of the best ways to start a game like this with strong gravitas

It's been years since I played this game, came back to this after watching Episode 1 of the HBO show to see the differences. There aren't very many and the ones that exist are incredibly minor, they did a great job.
Yea while I think the game is better overall, the show was better for some things.
I just think the death scene wasnt as emotional, the original Joel and Sarah put in all time performances for that😊

Played this many years ago... Still the best scene ever. Even better now that we can relate with things happening around us now.
I came into this game last night I knew what happened and I figured it would’ve been just a good and somewhat sad experience, but they just felt so real with how they acted and it got me when they were shot as if I didn’t know it was gonna happen. Especially at 1:26 it reminded me of things I say with my parents.
Wow the first episode follows this so perfectly. Everything from the intro to Joel's backstory.

In my opinion, this is still the greatest opening to anything, not just any game, but any show or movie, any story I have ever seen! The voice acting, especially in the final scene, just feels so authentic and real. I cry every damn time! And then followed by the most chilling flash-foward audio montage of society falling apart, it sets the scene for the rest of the consistently emotional and mind-blowing story perfectly!
9:31 the guy who randomly spawns half way up the building and then falls to his death is my favorite character. RIP green shirt guy
I love all the cutscenes and the gameplay until the credits start. I dont know why but they gibe me everytine goosebumps and the guitar music in the backround is so perfect too. I didnt finish the game yet and I play every day a few minutes because I dont want the story to end :(. Somtimes while playing I think that it would be really cool to be in such a situation with Ellie and Joel, then I realize that this will never happen and i just wanna cry tbh

I love it that Naughty Dog does that, I like to see and play the outbreak day how everything started, etc. So many Movies or Games with these type of Category Zombie, are like u are in the middle of the Apocalpyse but u never see how t started etc. Nice
This game was the reason I got my PS3 back then, best money ever spent, which also allowed me to play others that I love like Tomb Raider, GTA and Uncharted
The funny thing is I played this 10 years ago when it came out.
I just started watching the movie and forgot all about this opening scene and while watching the show I kept thinking I've seen this movie before there's another movie that starts similar.

Came back here after watching the HBO live adaptation for comparison. It’s a very close call but the game version gives that little bit more emotion. Hats off to actors Pedro Pascal and Nico Parker for their brilliant performance.

Then Last of us 2 comes along and bumbles this whole story....this is the only title in this franchise as far as im concerned.

I remember buying this game when it first came out. The scenes with the police are just so damn scary because of hopeless it was for them to save anyone. They were completely overwhelmed.

The show recreated this brilliantly.
I’m sure others liked it but I think the game still does a better job thus far. Which if anything is just a testament to how far games have come and why they’re more successful than film.
Also, thought I’d be okay with it but the tentacles/tendrils the zombies have instead of spores is just a but too much imo. Kinda alien looking.
Despite that, I’m still on board for now.

This game was bundled with my PS4 so I had no idea what it was about going into it. I initially thought the girl on the game's cover art was an older Sarah, and I assumed Joel was going to be the one to die. But then the game pulled the rug out from under me by killing off Sarah.
I didn't expect that at all. Usually it's the parent that dies in these types of stories.

I always disliked the zombie genre but this game got me into it because they had a cool scientific explanation and the dark ending was very thought provoking. That being said it bothers me that in the zombie genre you are not allowed to use the word or be aware of the concept of zombies. Zombies are real just visit any homeless heroin camp. Truth is stranger than fiction. I hate the convention of shock and surprise. “Infected” “walkers” “necromorphs”
“Reanimates” “neurophages” just say zombies for god’s sake. A zombie is a zombie.
