      In my gym we have this Russian roided powerlifter who weighs around 140 kg / 308 lbs (my weight is 90 kg / 198 lbs). His arms are thicker than my legs, while I do have buff legs. We always start standing and I could leverage my leg strength to balance out his weight and strength, but once we fall to the ground and he lays on top of me I can't do shit. Sweeping, shrimping, pushing away etc. Nothing works, he gets a holds of my hand and forces an Americana or just crushes my skull without any submission where I'm forced to tap. What is your advice for this? This is about No Gi btw.

      ​@@attila2946definitely a tough task. Try it be mobile and not let him connect any grips together, onto eachother. The second he does, that's when you're screwed.

      The other 40 percent of the time, as they smash you can "coach" them on how to submit you. For me that works all day every day and even twice on Sunday

      I feel ya man. 5’5ft and 130lbs. Even the perfect technique sometimes doesn’t work when they are 60-100lbs bigger. Makes me scared to go for something bc if it fails and they pass I’m toast the rest of the round

    This is a great video, validated a few things I had figured out over the last few years rolling with bigger, younger opponents. I think these tips would apply to older versus younger guys as well as smaller versus bigger.

    I was always under the illusion that the triangle and armbar were the secret weapons of small-person BJJ. When I couldn’t get a bigger guy to tap, I always thought it was my lack of skill. It could still be. But it’s nice to see a little realism here.

      There's a lot of things in BJJ that need to be better accepted as reality. For one BJJ is hard. For example "I need to work on my side control escapes, it's so hard to get out," Of course it is lol, you're in a dominate position.

      I don't know how tall you are, but triangles are very hard to hit if you have short legs, i'm a purple belt from Brazil and i've won many local and some regional championships but i've never submitted anyone with a triangle from guard, all my my triangles are from mount or back (i learned in a John Danaher instructional). Some moves are better in some body types, and that is completely normal.

      Have you seen Danaher's Triangle stuff? One of my coaches taught a piece of it over 6 weeks. Totally changes how you look at triangles. Short legs, too tall, too short, etc. Is it 100%? no. Does it change how you think about triangles? yes.

      I'm struggling on a systematic approach.
      If they are on their knees trying to pass, how should I position?
      If they are standing up to pass, how should I position?
      And so on...

      A video covering mount escapes in all-out live scenarios similarly to how you did the side control live escape video would be awesome. It’s also very hard to find videos with all-out positional sparring and I believe those are way more realistic than just showing the techniques in isolation with no resistance.

    These are some nice tips. I’m a (almost 52) year old,190 pound, 4 stripe purple belt that got tapped last week by a 23 year old, 300 pound, solid blue belt. Normally I can keep up with bigger guys because of their lack of skill or gas tank (which mine isn’t that good either 😂) but this guy for some reason just gives me fits. I’m not naive enough to realize that my best bjj days are probably behind me so thanks for the tips. ❤

    Most of the killers I roll with are 50+ pounds more than me. And I’m 190lbs! I’ve only been rolling for three months so I have still a ton to learn but I’ve learned to attack wrists and ankles. I may not be able to tap all of you but I can crunch a joint for a tap.

      Master shrimping bro and learning under hooks and understand what your frames are there for !
      And one advice that works for me is let my bigger opponent “work” me but be safe and smart and just let them get tired !
      Once I see that they’re hyperventilating that’s when I go for the kill . In my opinion 👌

    Great video! Do you have tips for the opposite way around? For bigger people dealing with smaller opponents. I find I am bigger than 75% of the people I am training with. There I am often big and slow. So sparring with smaller guys is like trying to slow down someone running 2x my speed.

      Pull guard right into the dummy sweep. Marcello Garcia did this all the time.

    Hi Jordan, thank you for the explanation! Could you got over Tip 5 for No Gi in detail? Also how can I escape side control when their hip is sprawled(like a hybrid between traditional side control/kesa). Scenario: He has me in side control on the right hand side of my body. My opponent's hip is usually sprawled onto me and he is trying to isolate my far side arm(left) I am trying to keep my frames and not allow my arm to be isolated, his left leg is based(not fully but on angle on his toes, not fully on the flat) on line with my shoulder and right leg(instep on the floor) sprawled down. So basically kesa but no head and arm control. What I've been doing is using turtle and then escaping when hes tired, but to get there it takes so much effort and hes about 90-100 pounds heavier than I am. As I look back on my videos I think I should be committing to my bumping and bridging some more to create space then get a frame in so I can play guard but in the moment it feels so hard with the pressure. Please let me know your thoughts and thank you for your content its helped me a lot!

    I would really love a video on turtle escapes. I often get to turtle with bigger guys, but find myself stuck when trying to get out. When i try to make a move to escape, they quickly find a way to drive their weight back into me and flattent me back to my side. Ive tried looking at videos but they dont really do a great job of showing big people with consistent weight driving into you.

    I’m a brown belt and even though I’m not that small (5’11”, 180 lbs) I’m for some reason the second lightest advanced belt ( purple and above) by 30 lbs, with several guys over 90 lbs larger. It really it struggle bus. I find Roger Gracie’s full guard series probably my best resource against gigantic opponents. And yes, just yesterday, in a fun roll with a 280 lbs black belt friend, I had my triangle passed and then spent two minutes trying to escape side control like a bugs on its back😂

    I haven't tried it on larger opponents yet, but I've found that the baratoplata/tarikoplata work pretty good against an opponent that locks their hands together.

    Hi Jordan, I always learn a lot from you and why not retribute the favor? Try ankle pick grabbing the ankle in the same side of the collar grip, this should be the primary goal in my opinion once when you do that you will end up in side control instead of opponents guard. I always go to the same side and if the opponent pull the leg then I go to the opposite ankle. Try and let me know if it worked for you too :)

    Since I am a big guy I have a problem during rolls since I can not put full pressure because I would crush small guys, and because of that I can not pin them and they always get out and my size is useless in BBJ rolls, and always there are videos about how to win against a big guy, please do a video on how to win against a small guy if you are a big guy a can not put pressure, thank you ... OSU.

    One thing I’m figuring out with big dudes especially is not to over extend my frames, and to use mobility and better cardio as much as possible to try and cook them so they start making mistakes. I’m 170, so I’m just not going to muscle a 230 pound dude into a sub, I’ve got to be smarter and lay traps for them to fall in.

    Can I get some advice on what is a good guard for the street, for a 12 year old female vs a big badguy? The Gracies teach closed guard. And if you do that, and hug them, u don't get punched but u do get smashed. Is this the best guard to do when they are on top of you? Thanks

    I'm 6'2, 90 kg, and although I tend to be on the larger side in my gym, it usually means I get paired with the guys in the god tier size category, 100 kg + . Watching this video made me realize i was doing it all wrong and I can't wait to implement this stuff and stop getting stomped by our 120 kg white belt.

    May i add against big dudes I spend the first 2-3 min locking them up inside my guard and making them work their cardio out early. Usually they peter out and I can attack later on in the round. Attacking them early has a much lower chance of success.

    I’m 6’3” and 270, I’d say avoid chokes from below or side. I have a horse neck so i get tapped to joint locks much more frequently.

    I need to start prioritizing getting to turtle. I spend a lot of time either with significantly bigger training partners, significantly better training partners, or both. With the significantly bigger partners on the same level as me, I find trouble with all the things you mentioned.

      A good way to think of it is if you turtle, you're not in side control. And if you have a good turtle you won't have your back taken. It's not always possible to turtle but the more you can the better. As long as you prevent grips your back won't be taken. Imo it's an extremely important and valuable position to get good at. Way moreso than getting good at escaping side control. That never becomes easy.

    100% on the triangle. Sometimes I specifically wait for them to go for a triangle just to get a low energy transition to top.
    That's something that a lot of non-bigger guys miss. Sometimes, we do things that are unusual just because we want to preserve energy. Just because it is easy to pass my guard does not mean that passing my guard is always the best idea. Sometimes I let a guy take mount just because I'm comfortable there.
    I'm not big on points and I'm always thinking sub only.

      In nogi probably an armbar from mount or rnc. In Gi the bow and arrow for sure.

    Just dropping a comment to help. I learned to stay off my neck as a white belt, I'd get stacked during the armbar, now I just roll over and go belly down

    I’m 145 at best and had to roll with one guy 230 and one 285 after. The 285r escaped the triangle and made me feel the whole earth on my body with side control. I’d rather chase the back lol
