tell the media and society to stop perpetuating wildlife as something to kill and murder. when I was out in the desert a decade ago seeing family and my car broke down (i was like 19) and i had to walk several miles back to their house and took a shortcut through vacant land on the outskirts of the town, I had many wild coyotes follow me the entire way. must have been a small group of a half dozen. they kept running back and forth around so much and going in and around scrub bushes it was hard to tell which ones were the same ones and if more had come up.
i stopped and showed them my hands and pockets and they smelled me and let me reach out and pet their backs. they stood right alongside me like my own dogs do. i had a leather belt on and they kept wanting to take my belt off any time they thought i couldn't see them. they were very sweet and curious, they never once were mean. they have a very unique trot to their gait, they just seem to float across the ground the way their paws move. they are also very lightweight, about the weight of a collie. i took a bottle of water out for one and poured it into a hubcap i found from an old car on the way and he drank the water all up. they just followed me behind me and alongside me the entire way back. my uncle couldnt believe it. when i went up on his deck and banged on the door he jumped back from the window and he said "what the hell is this?" i said "its my posse, let us in". lol

@@MrWolfSnack I agree with you. Example is that a lot of people hate sharks and other animals, yet there’s barely any shark related deaths every year. Sharks are just chill, and most don’t even attack when there’s blood nearby. Some people have to realise that, like us, not everyone of a certain species is bad. They’re like us, some are aggressive, others are nice. Also that story was really nice :)

They don't think that way. Like sharks, they're likely not to even see you as food. Hyenas are a very tamable animal believe it or not, it's just not a good life for them and one bite, even a playful and well mannered one, can seriously damage you since they're evolved to crush bones for nutrition with their jaws. Regardless though, they're wonderful animals and like dogs (even though they are their own species entirely), they understand social behavior and will show affection when rewarded and when hungry. Because of their raw strength and sharp teeth however, it's difficult to train them without restraint since they can playfully bite one another more safely than with humans, even though it wouldn't be aggressive whatsoever -- still dangerous nonetheless.

So first of all this is extremely dangerous and I don't advise letting a hyena get that close. Second of all this is adorable and I love it anyways. Animals don't attack people for food often due to humans being unusual prey, so sometimes you get really sweet moments like these if the animal feels safe enough to approach you. Again though.. Don't do this, really. You might encounter one that either feels threatened enough to attack, or for some reason decides it does want to eat you.

These people were not in danger. Hyenas are not aggressive. Not even when they hunt and kill are they all that aggressive. They're strategic and loud. They don't just fucking walk up and bite things. Dogs don't even do that usually unless afraid. But Hyenas ain't afraid of shit, obviously. That's why so many African dudes tame them for whatever reason. It's not a great life for them, but it's entirely doable and they understand social affection and will show kindness for food and love.

I remember reading about a scene where a pack of wolves that had never seen what a horse was before meeting one for the first time, they reacted exactly like this, not aggressive, just stared curiously while keeping some distance.
While this may seem strange it actually makes sense, you can't just eat anything you like, you have to factor in effort given (hunting/gathering) and whether something is edible (poisoning) and even with the latter it's not always just a case of whether the target evolved to be fatal to eat, you could swallow the wrong part and die after due to something like vitamin overdoes, there are 2 cases of this happening in humans, so the Hyenas' response makes sense when you look at this data, they see pale skinned white humans (sitting inside a big weird thingy I might add) and are curious but not sure what to do with it so instead just sniff a bit and then move on to something else

It was only curious in the sense that it was wondering if it could get away with grabbing the free meat hanging out the side of the car. Everything in this video suggest to me that it was building up to an attack. It showed little fear and was testing what it could get away with. Given enough time, that hyena would have nipped.
Animals don't always broadcast their intention to attack. Sometimes it is a split second decision that comes out of the blue. That's why seasoned animal handlers that seemingly should have known better can and frequently do get nipped. They never saw it coming because there were no signs.
That is why you never leave a wild animal encounter to chance, particularly with animals as powerful as these. The default should always be "this thing can bite, I should keep my distance."

Just look at when the dude simply moved his arm a little, both of the hyena's backed off.
I've encountered coyotes, raccoons, opossums, etc.. while hiking in California and all of those animals just left me alone. They aren't bloodthirsty beings looking to kill us, they're more afraid of us. The only times an animal would really attack a human is if they're defending their babies, if we are in their territory, or if we provoke them.

For those wondering why the Hyena is so cautious, game parks guides have come to the conclusion that Hyenas or any other predators cannot harm you if you are on top of a safari vehicle because it does not consider the vehicle as prey due to the size of the vehicle just like it can't attack a hippo or elephants. However, if you get out of the vehicle and even worse, start running, their instinct to chase you will kick in and you will become a good lunch in no time. Note that Hyenas don't kill its prey first, it eats it while the prey is still alive. Therefore, your death will take longer than you think.

LoL 1cm from a jaw capable of grinding his hand into its constituent molecules

I can’t believe how stupid and dangerous this was. People who think otherwise are the ones we hear about on the news with their remains being found. Watching too many Disney movies.

That's very dangerous and ill advised. That hyena, with one bite, can easily rip off the hand from the arm.

That guy is lucky the hyena didn’t take a bite out of his hand. Hyenas bite strength is more powerful than a lion and tiger

Putting your hand that close to a wild hyena's mouth is the ultimate definition of stupidity and "playing with fire".

If it bites you, you lose your hand

  • @goldstandardaviation1667

On one hand you are lucky he didn't rip your arm off. On the other hand you just did your small part in placing humans on the hyena menu.
